Furthermore, for those suffering from internal injury due to overwork and fatigue, or with deficiency-cold of the Middle Qi (Middle Jiao Qi), where the Spleen fails to control blood resulting in bloody dysentery, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) should be used with added Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark); or Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) and Chaohei Ganjiang (Stir-fried Blackened Zingiberis Rhizoma) should be employed for treatment until recovery is achieved.
An effective empirical formula for chronic diarrhea leading to bloody dysentery accompanied by lower abdominal pain:
Qiu Li (Autumn Pear, 4 liang)
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 qian)
Qu Shu Gen Pi (Bark of Qu Tree Root, 1 liang)
Mash them together thoroughly, squeeze out the juice using summer cloth mixed with water, and take on an empty stomach for immediate cure.
For heatstroke in summer presenting with red and white dysentery, use the following prescription:
Jiao Shan Zha (Charred Crataegi Fructus, 5 qian)
Hong Tang (Brown Sugar, 5 qian)
Bai Tang (White Sugar, 5 qian)
Bai Luo Bo (White Radish, 1 piece)
Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba, 1.5 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
If it is white dysentery, use 1 liang of brown sugar; if it is red dysentery, use 1 liang of white sugar. [If it is red and white dysentery, use the above formula].
[Regarding constipation], people assume it is due to extreme dryness of the Large Intestine, but who knows that it is actually dryness of the Lung Qi? When the Lungs are dry, their clear and descending qi cannot flow down to the Large Intestine, and the water of the Kidney Meridian is only sufficient to maintain itself, let alone flow sideways to moisten the arid intestines. The prescription is as follows:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 3 liang)
Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 3 liang)
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 3 qian)
Niu Nai (Cow's Milk, 1 bowl)
Huo Ma Ren (Cannabis Semen, 1 qian)
Decoct in 2 bowls of water until reduced to 0.6 parts, mix with cow's milk, and take orally. After one or two doses, bowel movement will surely become unobstructed. [The brilliance of this formula lies not merely in moistening the Large Intestine but in tonifying the Kidney; its further brilliance lies not only in tonifying the Kidney but also in nourishing the Lung; and its greatest brilliance lies not in directly tonifying the Lung but in lifting Lung Qi.] Since the Large Intestine resides in the lower pathway and is difficult to treat independently, it must be moistened via the Kidney Meridian and cleared via the Lung Meridian. By opening the lower orifices, the upper orifices will naturally flow freely. This is the method of treating lower diseases from the upper aspect.
[Constipation often involves excess patterns; the aforementioned formula treats deficiency patterns. This formula treats excess patterns with remarkable efficacy. The prescription is]:
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian)
Gui Wei (Tanacetum Parietarium Radix et Rhizoma / Angelicae Sinensis Cauda, 1 liang)
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 5 fen)
Mi (Honey, half cup)
Decoct in water and take orally.
In this formula, Da Huang promotes purgation, while Gui Wei moistens; Gui Wei remains the sovereign herb. Although it induces purgation, it is not overly harsh, avoiding the risk of Yin exhaustion. Moreover, with Sheng Ma to lift the qi, there is retention within the purgation, so why worry excessively?
