Wujunzi Decoction (Five Gentlemen Decoction): Treats vomiting and diarrhea caused by deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, accompanied by dampness.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, equal parts), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, half dose).
Cut the above herbs. Decoct in water and take orally.
Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction): Treats Taiyin disease (Disease of the Taiyin channel/syndrome). Symptoms include spontaneous diarrhea without thirst, abdominal pain due to yin-cold, shortness of breath and cough, cholera with vomiting, difficulty in digesting food, and a sensation of obstruction in the chest and diaphragm. It is also used for Qi deficiency of the Middle Jiao resulting from malaria, miasma, or epidemics that persist for a long time; or for syndromes such as middle-jiao deficiency generating cold.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, each 3 liang).
Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, decoct in water, and take warm.
Yihuang San (Enrich Yellow Powder): Treats deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach. (Also known as Bupi San, Tonify Spleen Powder).
Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), He Zi Rou (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, each 0.5 liang, cut and stir-fried), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, 2 qian).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, and take warm before meals. Mr. Dongyuan stated that Yan Xiaozhong, in compiling Qian Yi's formulas, used Yihuang San to tonify Earth (Spleen). He also said that excessive Wind will inevitably overcome Spleen Earth, so one should first solidify the Spleen. Ignorant practitioners fail to examine whether there is cold or heat in the Spleen and uniformly use Spleen-tonifying medicines. They also fail to realize that the formula contains Ding Xiang and Qing Pi, which are acrid and hot and greatly drain Lung Metal. For Spleen deficiency syndromes, how can one drain its child organ (Lung)? Only when Cold Water counter-rebels against Earth, presenting with middle-cold vomiting, abdominal pain, green or white dysentery/diarrhea, and cold breath from the mouth and nose, is Yihuang San a miraculous medicine. However, if vomiting and diarrhea result from excessive intake of hot medicines like Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) damaging the Spleen and Stomach, or from summer heat injuring the Spleen and Stomach with accumulated heat, leading to slow convulsions characterized by hot breath from the mouth and nose, this formula must not be used.
Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction): Treats Spleen and Stomach weakness, lack of appetite, or chronic malaria and dysentery, or difficulty in digesting food, or vomiting with acid regurgitation, or cough with wheezing and rapid breathing. If there are deficiency-fire symptoms, Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) must be added for particularly rapid efficacy.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Fu Ling (Poria, each 2 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, each 1 qian).
Decoct with fresh ginger and jujube in water.
Fuzi Liyin Jian (Aconite Nourishing Yin Decoction): Treats true Yin deficiency, abdominal distension and fullness, vomiting, and hiccups. (Vomiting with matter but no sound is called "Tu"; hiccups with sound but no matter is called "Yue"; vomiting with both matter and sound is called "Ou"). Phlegm-fluid retention causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea with abdominal pain, and Mingmen fire decline, Yang absent within Yin.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 3-5-7 qian or 1-2 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2-3 qian or 5-7 qian), Zhi Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 1-2-3 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1-2 qian), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried until yellow, 1-2 qian), or add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1-2 qian).
Decoct in two zhong of water until reduced to 7-8 fen, and take hot. (This formula is Liyin Jian with added Fuzi, hence the name Fuzi Liyin Jian. The efficacy of Liyin Jian is profound; see this book for details, not recorded here in detail.)
Liwei Huiyang Yin (Six-Ingredient Return Yang Decoction): Treats syndromes of impending collapse of Yin and Yang.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1-2 liang or several qian), Zhi Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 2-3 qian), Pao Gan Jiang (Prepared Ginger, 2-3 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 5 qian or 1 liang), Dang Gui Shen (Body of Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian; if diarrhea or bleeding occurs, replace with Dong Zhu [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma], more is better).
Decoct in two zhong of water using vigorous fire until reduced to 7-8 fen, and take warm. If muscle tremors and profuse sweating occur, add Zhi Huang Qi (Prepared Astragali Radix) 4-5 qian, or 1 liang, or Dong Bai Zhu 3-5 qian. If diarrhea occurs, add Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) 2 pieces, or Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 20 grains, which is also acceptable. If Yang deficiency leads to floating upward, add Fu Ling (Poria) 2 qian. If Liver channel stagnation occurs, add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 2-3 qian.
Weiguan Jian (Stomach Gate Decoction): Treats diarrhea caused by Spleen and Kidney deficiency-cold, or even prolonged diarrhea with unceasing abdominal pain, cold dysentery, etc.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 3-5 qian or 1 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried, 2 qian), Bai Bian Dou (Lablab Semen Album, stir-fried, 2 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1-2 qian), Jiao Gan Jiang (Charred Ginger, 1-2-3 qian), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, prepared, 5-7 fen), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried, 1-2-3 qian).
Decoct in two zhong of water until reduced to 7 fen, and take warm at a considerable distance from meals. For severe diarrhea, add Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen) 1-2 qian, stir-fried with flour, or Po Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus) is also acceptable. For severe Qi deficiency, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) as appropriate. For Yang deficiency with downward collapse and instability, add Zhi Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) 1-2-3 qian. For severe abdominal pain, add Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 7-8 fen, or add Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 8 fen. For stagnation pain with blockage, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2-3 qian. For incontinence/slippage, add Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) 2 pieces, or Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 20 grains. If Liver pathogen rebels against the Spleen, add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1-2 qian.
Chonghe Yin (Harmony Decoction): Treats cold damage from wind-cold, headache and fever, stiffness and tension in shoulders and back, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and distension, combined with struggle between cold and dampness, stiffness and tension in four limbs, invasion of cold qi, and pain in waist and feet.
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water overnight, remove coarse skin, cut into slices, stir-fried until slightly yellow, 1 liang 2 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, remove rhizome), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, remove rhizome), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, stir-fried, each 5 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, remove pulp, bran-fried until slightly yellow), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, remove joints), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith, each 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed seven times in boiling water, soaked in ginger juice, dried, stir-fried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Bo Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, remove coarse bark), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria, remove skin), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, each 1.5 qian), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, remove coarse bark, soaked in ginger juice overnight, stir-fried dry over slow fire, each 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 7.5 qian).
Cut the above herbs. Take 2 qian per dose, add one zhan of water, 2 jin of fresh ginger, and one root of scallion white. Decoct until reduced to 7 fen, and take warm at any time. For cold injury causing nausea and vomiting, decoct with Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger). To open the stomach and promote appetite, decoct with dates and take warm on an empty stomach. For cold hernia pain, add salt-stir-fried Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) and Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) and decoct together.
Dang Gui San (Angelica Powder): Smooths and regulates Qi and Blood, harmonizes the exterior and interior, clears the heart and abdomen, resolves various diseases, and treats self-dysentery caused by accumulation of warm-heat, restlessness, and agitation.
