Treats wind-cold injury in spring, presenting with nasal congestion, heavy voice, or clear rhinorrhea, cough, phlegm obstruction, rebellious Qi, and a floating-slow pulse at the Yingqiang (Renying) position.
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Su Ye (Perilla Leaf) (use purple variety, remove stems), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 8 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen).
Take the above herbs, add three slices of fresh ginger, three cun of scallion white, and one and a half bowls of water. Decoct until eight parts remain. Take hot after meals. If there is phlegm, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (1 qian); if coughing, add Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) (each 8 fen), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (10 berries).
Treats cold damage from non-seasonal pathogens, headache, aversion to cold, high fever, chest/epigastric fullness and oppression, vomiting, as well as seasonal epidemics, mountain miasma, malaria, and failure to adapt to local conditions.
Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba) (1 qian 5 fen), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (processed with ginger, each 8 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen).
Take the above herbs, add three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, and two bowls of water. Decoct until one bowl remains. Take hot when far from meals (either before or long after eating).
Treats heat, headache, aversion to cold, and body fatigue caused by overexertion, intense study, diligent administration causing spirit injury, or irregular diet. If extreme fatigue is followed by re-injury of wind-cold, the headache may feel like bursting, resembling exterior cold damage symptoms. Misusing diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) drugs rarely fails to harm the person. Therefore, Mr. Dongyuan (Li Dongyuan) proposed the differentiation between internal injury and external damage, primarily using this formula to save many people. Generally, for internal injury, the pulse at the Qikou (Y Kou) on the right hand is three times larger than the Yingqiang (Renying) on the left hand. Dongyuan's differentiation method is very detailed; it is not repeated here.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian 5 fen, remove radix tip), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian 5 fen, honey-fried), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 qian, washed with wine), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (7 fen, fried), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (8 fen), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (5 fen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (5 fen).
Note: This formula uses Sheng Ma and Chai Hu to lift sunken Yang Qi. Specifically, Chai Hu causes the clear Qi in the stomach to rotate left and ascend upward; Sheng Ma causes the clear Qi in the stomach to rotate right and ascend upward. This is a subtle efficacy that many do not investigate.
Take the above herbs, add three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, and two bowls of water. Decoct until eight parts remain. Take hot when far from meals. Alternatively, add Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (5 fen) to nourish Kidney Water and drain latent fire in the Stomach, which is especially excellent. If there is severe body heat, one dose suffices; once Qi harmonizes and slight sweating occurs, recovery ensues. In summer, if spirit is short, add Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus); if dry mouth, add Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix); if body stabbing pain due to blood deficiency, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix); if headache, add Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Spora); if vertex headache, add Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix) and Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma). These four herbs are used together for various headaches. If phlegm, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens); if cough, add in spring Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Fo Er Cao (Petasitae Flos); in summer Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus); in autumn Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), and Jin Fei Cao (Antennariae Herba); in winter Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) and Ma Dou Ling (Aristolochiae Fructus). For chronic cough due to latent fire in the Lungs, remove Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix). If unable to eat/drink, due to Cold in the Stomach or Qi stagnation, add in spring Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix); in winter Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) and Dou Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus); in summer Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma); in autumn Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus). If epigastric fullness/oppression, add Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba); if abdominal distension, add Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), and Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex); if cold weather, add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex); if abdominal pain, add Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); if Cold present, add Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus); in summer add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix); in winter add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), and Dou Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus). If hypochondriac pain, add Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). If pain below the navel, add Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata); if unceasing, it is Cold, add Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex); if weak legs, add Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) and Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix).
