Huangdi, while in leisure, dismissed his attendants and asked Qibo: "I have already heard the classics on the Nine Needles, discussing the reversal and smoothness of Yin and Yang, and the completion of the Six Meridians. I wish to hear about 'Kouwen' (Oral Questions/Teachings)." Qibo stepped out of his seat and bowed twice, saying: "Well asked! This is knowledge orally transmitted by our former masters." Huangdi said: "I wish to hear these oral teachings." Qibo replied: "The onset of all diseases arises from wind, rain, cold, and heat; imbalances of Yin and Yang; excessive emotions such as anger and joy; improper diet; and living conditions. Great fright or sudden fear causes the separation of Blood and Qi, the rupture and dispersion of Yin and Yang, the cessation of the Collaterals, the blockage of the Mai vessels, the reversal of Yin and Yang Qi, the stagnation of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), the emptiness of the Jing-Mai vessels, and the disorder of Blood and Qi circulation, thereby losing their normal state. These discussions are not found in the canonical texts; please allow me to explain their methods."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes yawning?" Qibo answered: "Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) travels through the Yang aspects during the day and through the Yin aspects at midnight. Yin governs the night, and the night requires sleep; Yang governs the upper body, and Yin governs the lower body. Therefore, Yin Qi accumulates below, while Yang Qi has not yet exhausted. Yang pulls upward, and Yin pulls downward; the mutual attraction of Yin and Yang results in frequent yawning. When Yang Qi exhausts and Yin Qi becomes abundant, the eyes close for sleep; when Yin Qi exhausts and Yang Qi becomes abundant, one awakens. Treatment involves reducing the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and supplementing the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes hiccup?" Qibo said: "Food enters the Stomach, and Stomach Qi ascends to pour into the Lungs. If old Cold Qi and new food Qi both return to the Stomach, the new and old Qi become chaotic, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) and Xie Qi (Evil Qi) attack each other, Qi gathers and reverses, and re-emerges from the Stomach, causing hiccup. Treatment involves supplementing the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and reducing the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes sighing?" Qibo said: "This occurs when Yin Qi is abundant and Yang Qi is deficient, Yin Qi moves rapidly while Yang Qi moves slowly, and Yin Qi is excessive while Yang Qi is depleted. Thus, sighing occurs. Treatment involves supplementing the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and reducing the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes shivering and coldness?" Qibo said: "Cold Qi lodges in the skin, Yin Qi is abundant, and Yang Qi is deficient, causing shivering and coldness. Treatment involves supplementing all Yang meridians."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes belching?" Qibo said: "Cold Qi lodges in the Stomach, Jue Ni (Rebellious Qi) rises from below, disperses, and re-emerges from the Stomach, causing belching. Treatment involves supplementing the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Another method is to supplement Mei Ben (Brow Root acupoint)."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes sneezing?" Qibo said: "Yang Qi is harmonious and smooth, filling the Heart and emerging from the Nose, causing sneezing. Treatment involves supplementing the Ying-River point of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Mei Ben (Brow Root). Another method is to supplement above the eyebrows."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes stretching?" Qibo said: "When the Stomach Qi is not solid, all meridians become deficient. When all meridians are deficient, sinews and vessels become lax. When sinews and vessels are lax, walking or exertion fails to restore Qi energy, causing stretching. Treatment should supplement the space between muscles according to the location of the pathogen."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes crying and tearing due to sorrow?" Qibo said: "The Heart is the master of the Zang-Fu organs. The Eyes are the gathering place of numerous meridians and the pathway for fluids from above. The Mouth and Nose are the portals of Qi. Therefore, sorrow and worry move the Heart; when the Heart moves, all Zang-Fu organs shake; when they shake, the gathered meridians are stimulated; when stimulated, the fluid pathways open; when open, tears and mucus flow. Fluids are used to nourish essence and moisten orifices. Thus, when the upper fluid pathway opens, tears flow; if tears do not stop, fluids deplete; if fluids deplete, essence is not nourished; if essence is not nourished, the eyes lose vision. This is called 'Depletion of Essence'. Treatment involves supplementing Tian Zhu (Heavenly Pillar) meridian points along the neck."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes deep sighing?" Qibo said: "Worry and thought cause the Heart Tie (Heart Vessels) to tighten; tight Heart Vessels constrain the Qi pathway; constrained Qi pathway leads to obstruction. Thus, deep sighing is used to extend and release it. Treatment involves supplementing the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian, and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, retaining the needle."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes drooling?" Qibo said: "Diet enters the Stomach. If there is Heat in the Stomach, parasites move; moving parasites cause the Stomach to relax; a relaxed Stomach opens Lian Quan (Spring at the Chin), causing drooling. Treatment involves supplementing the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes tinnitus?" Qibo said: "The Ears are the gathering place of numerous meridians. Thus, when the Stomach is empty, the gathered meridians become deficient; deficiency causes Qi and Blood to flow downward, leading to exhaustion in certain meridians, causing tinnitus. Treatment involves supplementing Ke Zhu Ren (Guest Master, i.e., Shang Guan) and the point where the nail meets the flesh on the thumb."
Huangdi asked: "What Qi causes self-biting of the tongue?" Qibo said: "This is caused by Jue Ni (Rebellious Qi) ascending to the head, with pulse Qi arriving in succession. Arrival of Shaoyin Qi causes biting of the tongue; arrival of Shaoyang Qi causes biting of the cheek; arrival of Yangming Qi causes biting of the lips. Observe the primary diseased meridian and apply supplementation."
"Regarding these twelve abnormalities, they are all strange pathogens invading the orifices. Therefore, wherever the pathogen resides, there is a deficiency. Upper Qi deficiency causes brain fullness sensation, painful tinnitus, painful head tilting, and dizziness. Middle Qi deficiency causes changes in urination and defecation, and painful intestinal borborygmus. Lower Qi deficiency leads to Wei syndrome (Flaccidity) and Jue syndrome (Cold extremities) with heart vexation. Treatment involves supplementing the point below the lateral malleolus and retaining the needle."
Huangdi asked: "How to treat them?" Qibo said: "Yawning is governed by the Kidney; take Foot-Shaoyin. Hiccup is governed by the Lung; take Hand-Taiyin and Foot-Shaoyin. Sighing is due to Yin-Yang disconnection; thus supplement Foot-Taiyang and reduce Foot-Shaoyin. Shivering/coldness: supplement all Yang meridians. Belching: supplement Foot-Taiyin and Foot-Yangming. Sneezing: supplement Foot-Taiyang Mei Ben. Stretching: supplement muscle spaces based on location. Tearing: supplement Tian Zhu along the neck (middle of the head/neck). Deep sighing: supplement Hand-Shaoyin Heart, Hand-Jueyin Pericardium, and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder, retain needle. Drooling: supplement Foot-Shaoyin. Tinnitus: supplement Ke Zhu Ren and the thumb nail corner. Self-biting tongue: observe main disease meridian and supplement. Dizziness/head tilt: supplement below lateral malleolus, retain needle. Flaccidity/Jue with heart vexation: puncture two cun above the interdigital space of the big toe, retain needle. Alternative: supplement below lateral malleolus, retain needle."
The text presents a coherent narrative, flowing with a majestic spirit amidst straightforward exposition. Its discussion on the mutual attraction of human Qi mechanisms far surpasses modern Western medicine theories. Yet, the Sages regarded this merely as supplementary matters. Some argue that Western medicine details form but ignores Qi, which is true; even regarding form, it may not be exhaustive. *Xi Yuan Lu* was not written by Sages, yet it can distinguish bone structures to determine life/death, which is also a matter of form. Do Westerners know this? The saints among Western doctors are only superior to mediocre contemporary Chinese doctors.
