Using one *Fuzi* (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata), weighing one tael, sliced into eight pieces, along with five qian of *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and *Ganjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and two qian of *Muxiang* (Aucklandiae Radix), decocted together. First, take a handful of scallion white (*Congbai*), stir-fry until cooked, and apply it as a hot compress to the area below the navel. Wait for the herbal medicine to cool, then administer by灌服 (force-feeding). After a short while, administer another dose.
A woman first experienced distending pain in the chest and hypochondrium, followed by flaccidity of the four limbs unable to hold themselves, profuse spontaneous sweating like rain, urinary incontinence, loose stools, tight mouth, closed eyes, and loss of appetite for more than ten days. Some considered it a severe case of Wind striking the Zang organs and were very worried. Xue Lizhai examined her and said, "Incorrect. If Wind had already struck the Zang organs, if True Qi had already collapsed, and if malignant symptoms were already present, how could it have lasted for ten days?" Observing her complexion, her face and eyes were red and sometimes blue/purple. Palpating her pulse, the left three positions were flooding and rapid, with the Liver pulse being particularly pronounced. Thus, it was known that the chest and breast distending pain was due to Blood deficiency in the Liver channel and stagnation/blockage of Liver Qi. The flaccidity of the four limbs was due to Blood deficiency failing to nourish the sinews. The continuous spontaneous sweating was due to Heat in the Blood causing fluids to leak recklessly. The urinary incontinence was due to excessive Heat in the Liver channel causing dysfunction of the Yin organ. The loose stools were due to exuberant Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth. After administering four doses of *Xijiao San* (Rhinoceros Horn Powder), all symptoms suddenly resolved. Subsequently, she was regulated and stabilized using *Jiawei Xiaoyao San* (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Later, due to depression and anger, the previous symptoms recurred, accompanied by fever, vomiting, poor appetite, and continuous menstruation. This was Wood exuberance overacting on Earth, with the Spleen failing to control the Blood. Using *Jiawei Guipi Tang* (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) as the main formula, assisted by *Xiaoyao San*, she recovered. Later, whenever she became extremely angry or experienced convulsions of the hands and feet during sleep, re-administering the previous medicine cured her.
Empress Dowager Liu of the Tang Dynasty suffered from Wind disease and could not speak. Her pulse was deep and nearly vanished. All physicians were at a loss, looking at each other helplessly. Xu Yinzong said, "Oral decoctions are no longer effective here." He immediately boiled dozens of hu of soup using *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix) and *Fangfeng* (Saposhnikoviae Radix), placed it under the bed, and let the steaming vapor envelop her like fog. That evening, she could speak again. After further medication, she rose and recovered.
Someone who was healthy at ordinary times suddenly appeared dead: body motionless, silent, unaware of people, eyes closed and unopenable, jaw clenched and unable to speak. Or perhaps slightly aware of people but hating sound, feeling only like dizziness and faintness, waking up after a period of time. This is caused by excessive sweating, leading to little Blood and Qi merging into the Blood, with Yang rising alone without descending. Qi becomes congested and fails to circulate, so the body appears dead. When Qi passes and Blood returns, Yin and Yang reconnect, hence waking up after a while. This is named Yu Mao (Depression and Dizziness). Mao is also called Xue Jue (Blood Jue). It is common in women. Jue is divided into Yin and Yang. For Yang Jue, tonify Yin by strengthening the source of Water. For Yin Jue, tonify Yang by benefiting the source of Fire.
When Yang Qi declines, Yin must encroach upon it, causing coldness from the fingertips to above the knees, named Han Jue (Cold Jue). *Liuyi Fuzi Tang* (Six-Ingredient Aconite Decoction) is suitable. When Yin Qi declines below, Yang encroaches upon it, causing heat in the soles of the feet. If heat is severe, it follows the Three Yin channels upward and reverses, called Re Jue (Heat Jue). *Liuwei Dihuang Wan* (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is suitable. The Liver stores Blood and governs anger. Anger causes Fire to rise from the Liver, carrying Blood upward, causing Blood to stagnate in the upper part. Blood and Qi become chaotic in the chest, clashing and causing reversal, called Bo Jue (Thin/Clashing Jue). *Puhuang Tang* (Cattail Pollen Decoction) is suitable. All movement belongs to Yang; thus, fatigue disturbs Yang, causing Yang to expand excessively and Labor-Fire to become hyperactive. Fire blazing dries Water and exhausts Essence. Therefore, delaying until summer, both internal and external heat prevail, Water declines further and Fire becomes more hyperactive. Solitary Yang reverses, like frying and boiling, hence called Jian Jue (Frying Jue). *Renshen Guben Wan* (Ginseng Root-Solidifying Pill) is suitable. The Qi of the Five Corpses suddenly invades humans, disrupting Yin and Yang and Blood and Qi. Form and Qi separate, failing to connect smoothly, causing sudden Jue resembling death, named Shi Jue (Corpse Jue). *Suhe Xiang Wan* (Styrax Pill) is suitable. Cold Phlegm confusing and stifling, with cold extremities, is named Tan Jue (Phlegm Jue). *Jiangfu Tang* (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) is suitable. Stomach Cold causing vomiting of roundworms is named Hui Jue (Roundworm Jue). *Wumei Wan* (Mume Pill) added with *Lizhong Tang* (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is suitable. Qi is the Yang of the human body. Once obstructed, Yang Qi cannot reach the four extremities, causing cold hands and feet, similar to Stroke. However, Stroke patients have warm bodies, while those with Qi Strike have cold bodies. This is named Qi Jue (Qi Jue). *Bawei Shunqi San* (Eight-Ingredient Smooth Qi Powder) is suitable.
Humans carry Yin and embrace Yang, consume flavors, and indulge in sexuality. Cold and heat interact, joy and anger invade alternately. Moreover, with various forms of depletion, Blood, Qi, Jing, and Shen are exhausted. How can there be no symptoms of sudden collapse and sudden death? Therefore, Stroke cases triggered by thief-Wind and empty evils account for only one or two out of ten. Most belong to internal deficiency of both Qi and Blood. Qi deficiency leads to insufficient growth of Yin Blood; Yin decline leads to extreme Heat generating Wind, with empty-Winner fighting internally. Spirit and Qi rush outward, leading to onset. Upon onset, all Qi reverses upward transforming into Fire, all Heat becomes hyperactive transforming into Wind, all fluids coalesce into Phlegm, and all waters surge into Saliva. At this time, there is ascending without descending, exiting without entering, like a violent storm, thunder dragons leaping, and water surging. Suddenly cut off unexpectedly. Thus, there are absolutely no symptoms of external contraction such as headache, body heat, aversion to wind, and aversion to cold. The root is truly Qi deficiency, with Wind and Phlegm as the branch. External triggers are merely concurrent symptoms of the branch.
*Niu Huang Wan* (Calculus Bovis Pill) and *Suhe Xiang Wan* treat different conditions. Heat blocking the orifices suits *Niu Huang Wan*; Cold blocking the orifices suits *Suhe Xiang Wan*. If symptoms of hand laxity, open mouth, and urinary incontinence appear (signs of death), urgently use *Shenfu* (Ginseng and Aconite) for vigorous tonification; occasionally survival occurs. If *Niu Huang* or *Suhe Xiang* enters the mouth and causes immediate death, it is because Cold-Heat blockage of orifices can be treated as tangible pathology. For sudden collapse of True Yuan, one must seek great medicines that are formless yet spiritual, to turn the tide safely. Using Wind drugs to treat Wind, Heat drugs to treat Heat, Poisonous drugs to attack Toxins, and Qi drugs to move Qi—this is the major principle of medication, based on seeking similarity in nature and treating decline with its corresponding category. As for variations of counter-assistance and reverse compliance, they vary according to the disease, with infinite changes, impossible to fix by rigid rules.
