Mouth and eye deviation (facial paralysis) is caused by disease in the blood vessels, distinguished between tendon diseases and vessel diseases, mostly related to the Stomach Earth. The *Classic* states: When the tendons of the Foot-Yangming and Hand-Taiyang meridians are tense, the eyes become deviated and cannot look straight ahead; this is a tendon disease of the Stomach causing mouth and eye deviation. It also states: The meridian of the Foot-Yangming runs alongside the mouth and circles the lips; this is a vessel disease of the Stomach causing mouth and eye deviation. Because the mouth and eyes move frequently, wind is generated; because the nose and ears remain still, wind subsides. However, tendons are nourished by blood, and vessels are the residence of blood. The *Classic* says: If vessels do not provide nourishment, tendons become tense. Furthermore, when pathogens invade due to deficiency, if one is struck by cold, tendons contract and pull the cheek, causing mouth and eye deviation; if struck by wind-heat, tendons and vessels become flaccid or dry and contracted, all leading to deviation. Yet, if Qi and Blood are healthy, heat does not necessarily cause flaccidity, nor cold necessarily cause tension. The presence of cold or heat is mostly due to the deficiency of Qi and Blood. Therefore, one should not assume that deviation to the left implies cold on the left and heat on the right, or vice versa for the right side. Wherever there is tension, there is a deficiency of Qi and Blood. In summary, cold is a pathogenic factor, while heat relates to Qi dysfunction. Areas where Qi fails to reach become sites of cold and disease. Can it be that one meridian is simultaneously attacked by both cold and heat pathogens, or one disease presents with both cold and heat Qi natures? Understanding this, we see that although various diseases may afflict one person with mixed symptoms, their root principle lies in unity (deficiency).
The *Ling Shu* states: Regarding the tendons of the Foot-Yangming, cold in the cheek tendons causes contraction and pulling, while heat causes flaccidity. Thus, cold on the left and heat on the right leads to left-side tension and right-side flaccidity; heat on the left and cold on the right leads to right-side tension and left-side flaccidity, due to the failure of Yang Qi to circulate freely. The *Classic* says: Where pathogens gather, Qi must be deficient. Hemiplegia or facial deviation, whether on the left or right, results from uneven circulation of blood vessels and unbalanced Qi. Treatment should focus on tonifying righteous Qi, moving stagnant Qi, and dispersing wind Qi, so that when Qi is balanced, wind subsides.
Wang Jiezhai said: After excessive eating and drinking, if one contracts wind-cold or suffers emotional anger, food stagnates in the Taiyin Spleen, preventing Stomach Qi from descending. Suddenly, reversal occurs, leading to coma and unconsciousness, termed Food Reversal (*Shi Jue*). If mistakenly treated as Wind Stroke or Qi Stagnation, death will ensue immediately. One should only use Yin-Yang light salt soup to induce vomiting; once the food is expelled, recovery follows. The *Classic* states: If there is a pulse above but none below, vomiting is indicated; failure to vomit leads to death.
Some individuals who are obese and habitually drink alcohol may suddenly experience stiffness of the tongue base, slurred speech, mouth and eye deviation, surging phlegm-Qi, and limb immobility. This is typical of Qi Stroke in obese people, characterized by external abundance but internal deficiency, compounded by damp-heat from alcohol. Treatment requires Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with calcined Ge Gen (Kudzu Root) and Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), using large doses of Ren Shen (Ginseng) to rescue the Qi. Yuan Rong stated: Diseases of wine-dampness can also manifest as Bi Syndrome, presenting with mouth and eye deviation, hemiplegia, and stiff tongue, resembling Wind Stroke. One must drain damp-toxicity and must not treat it as a Wind Disease requiring sweating.
Lu Dijing said: The *Classic* teaches: Spirit damaged by overthinking leads to muscle wasting; Intent damaged by sorrow leads to limb disability; Soul damaged by grief leads to tendon spasms; Corporeal Soul damaged by excessive joy leads to dry skin; Will damaged by rage leads to difficulty bending and stretching the waist and spine. Once, a widow suffered from curled fingers and heavy palms unable to lift, with mottled skin lesions. Various wind-dispelling herbs failed. She was cured by soothing depression and regulating Qi and Blood.
A patient with chronic dysentery suddenly fainted, eyes rolling upward, pulse chaotic, and profuse sweating. Danxi said: This is Yin deficiency with sudden collapse of Yang. It resulted from sexual activity after illness. Urgently treat with Ren Shen Gao (Ginseng Paste) and moxa the Qi Hai (Sea of Qi) acupoint. Soon, hand movement returned. Then lip movement returned. After three doses of Ginseng Paste, consciousness returned; after consuming several jin, full recovery occurred. Such symptoms are common after severe illness or postpartum in women. The Dantian and Qi Hai connect with the Kidney Meridian. At birth, the Life Gate (Ming Men) is established first, and the uterus connects to the umbilicus. Thus, Qi Hai and Dantian are truly the source of generating Qi and the root of the Twelve Meridians, which explains why moxibustion is effective.
