Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is born from the clear and cold qi of heaven and earth; therefore, its flavor is bitter and cold, and it is non-toxic. Its flavor is heavier than its aroma; being bitter and dense, it belongs to Yin. It is suitable for downward draining. If one wishes to make it ascend, guiding herbs must be added. Some stir-fry it with wine, some with ginger juice, and some steam it with Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu). This is because its bitter-cold nature is too strong, and such processing slightly reduces its properties, reflecting the profound meaning of the ancients' principle of "avoiding cold when using cold" (using cold-natured herbs with caution in cold conditions or constitutions).
When combined with Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Chuan Huanglian treats dysentery; when combined with Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), it treats hemorrhoids; when taken with Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin), it facilitates the interaction between the Heart and Kidneys in an instant. It calms the Liver, cools blood, regulates the Stomach, thickens the intestines, benefits the Gallbladder, drains Heart fire, dries dampness, resolves depression, relieves irritability, quenches thirst, kills parasites, calms roundworms, promotes urination, brightens the eyes, removes fullness, and eliminates childhood malnutrition. It clears stagnant heat of Heart fire, treats mania caused by Yang toxicity, summer-heat dysentery, alcohol-induced fullness, palpitations, intestinal wind, and various malignant sores due to damp-heat and stagnant heat. For patients with insufficient blood and Qi, weak Spleen and Stomach, false irritability and thirst, as well as postpartum blood deficiency, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and all conditions resembling but not being dysentery, it should be strictly contraindicated.
Hu Huanglian (Scutellariae Barbatae Rhizoma, often referred to as Scutellariae Radix in this context or specifically *Barbatiscutellaria*) treats bone-steaming consumptive fever, warm malaria with excessive heat, chronic dysentery leading to malnutrition, and malnutrition with chronic dysentery. It tonifies the Liver and Gallbladder, alleviates eye pain; it eliminates all diseases arising from damp-heat, pathogenic heat, and latent heat in the Yin aspect. It treats childhood night sweats and consumptive fever, and maternal fetal steaming with false fright.
Main Indications (Integration of Smallpox and Rashes): Chuan Huanglian drains Heart fire. For smallpox cases with blood heat and盛 (excessive) heat toxicity, or those occurring in intense summer heat with blood heat, it must be stir-fried with wine. It is contraindicated before the rash erupts, lest it cause "ice-stagnation" (trapping pathogens inside). However, the five flavors enter the Stomach and each return to their preferred organ; long-term use increases the Qi of that organ, which is the normal transformation of substances. Therefore, long-term use of Huanglian may transform into Fire due to excess; prolonged increase of Qi leads to imbalance and harm, which is the origin of premature death. Thus, only mild and bland herbs can be used for a long time.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) is born from the Yang Qi of heaven and earth; therefore, its flavor is sweet, pungent, and warm, and it is non-toxic. Its aroma is dense while its flavor is thin; it ascends and belongs to Yang. It enters the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, serving as a Wind-dispersing herb for the Jueyin Liver Meridian. It is generally used for treating Wind disorders, possessing ascending, dispersing, and releasing properties. It is incompatible with Veratri Radix (Lilü) and can neutralize the toxicity of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi).
Fangfeng can neutralize the great toxicity of Aconiti Radix (Wutou). It is a primary herb of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and also circulates through the Spleen and Stomach meridians. Its function is humble like a soldier, acting immediately upon command and reaching the disease site guided by other herbs. It treats pains throughout the body and serves as a moistening agent among Wind-dispersing herbs. It is generally effective for Wind disorders and easily dispels dampness. It eliminates Wind pathogenic factors above the middle of the body and Wind diseases below the middle of the body. It consolidates stagnant Qi in the cheeks, particularly draining excess Lung Shi (Excess syndrome). It drives away dizziness and head symptoms, restores vision in blindness, soothes the Liver and regulates Qi, treats tetany of the four limbs, opens the interstices (Couli), and expels pus from carbuncles and ulcers. It is a key herb for eliminating Upper Jiao Wind pathogenic factors, including severe Wind, aversion to Wind, Wind-Bi affecting the whole body, wandering Wind on the head and face, red eyes with excessive tearing. Misuse may drain the Yuan Qi of the Upper Jiao. In prescriptions, it is used because Wind can dispel Dampness and promote the dissemination of medicinal effects. It is often combined with Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie) because Fangfeng enters the Qi level, while Jingjie enters the Blood level.
Main Indications (Integration of Smallpox and Rashes): At the initial stage of smallpox, Fangfeng is indispensable for releasing Wind-Heat externally. For itching lesions, it is used with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin); for limbs failing to erupt, it is used with Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi), and must be stir-fried with wine. It is used for overly wet lesions because Wind can overcome Dampness. It is also used for dry lesions because it acts as a moistening agent within the prescription. Thus, it is said to: benefit heat, detoxify, harmonize blood, and stop itching. However, it should not be used for a long time, as its pungent and purely Yang nature ultimately scatters and consumes Blood.
Note: Although Fangfeng is a miraculous herb for dispelling Wind and Dampness, it is a pungent-warm, dispersing, and draining substance. [Caution advised for] Lung deficiency, Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, and Fire-dryness constitutions.
