Treats blood deficiency with flourishing fire, causing hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed) to run wild, hematuria (blood in urine), and hematochezia (blood in stool).
Rhinoceros Horn (sliced into fine powder) [Shuixi], Raw Rehmannia Root [Sheng Dihuang], White Peony Root [Baishao], Moutan Cortex [Mudanpi] (each 1.5 qian). Decoct in water, remove the dregs, and take with the Rhinoceros Horn powder. If the bleeding is caused by anger, add Gardenia Fruit [Shanzhi] and Bupleurum Root [Chaihu].
Among substances endowed with pure Yin qi, none surpasses Rhinoceros Horn; among those that cause turbid Yin to descend, none surpasses Rehmannia Root. White Peony Root is sour and astringent, while Moutan Cortex clears and descends; they are essential herbs for cooling blood and stopping bleeding. This is a divine formula for draining the South (Heart Fire) and filling the North (Kidney Water). When caused by anger, Qi must reverse and ascend; thus, Gardenia is added to bend the Qi downward. The Liver prefers free flow and discharge; thus, Bupleurum is added to unblock the stagnation of Wood. Although this prescription uses only four ingredients, it is uniquely named "Rhinoceros-Horn Rehmannia Decoction" because the emphasis lies on the two main ingredients (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia), while White Peony and Moutan merely serve as assistants.
Treats Qi and Blood deficiency with internal heat, presenting with a red face, vexation, thirst, and a large but empty pulse.
Astragalus Root [Huangqi] (honey-fried, 1 liang), Angelica Sinensis [Danggui] (washed with wine, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach.
Li Dongyuan said: The *Classic* states that an empty pulse indicates Blood deficiency; it also states that Blood deficiency generates fever. These conditions mostly arise from irregular eating and overwork. The symptoms resemble those treatable by White Tiger Decoction [Baihu Tang], distinguished only by the absence of a long and solid pulse. Misusing White Tiger Decoction will certainly lead to death. Astragalus Root is a sweet-warm herb for tonifying Qi. Here, the root condition is Blood deficiency; why use it as the sovereign herb? The *Classic* says: "In treating disease, one must seek the root"; and again: "When Yang grows, Yin grows." Therefore, tonifying Qi when there is Blood deficiency treats the root. Assisted by the moistening properties of Angelica Sinensis, which harmonizes with Yin-Blood, the two herbs work together to reach everywhere above and below, interior and exterior. Hence, it is named "Blood-Tonifying Decoction" [Buxue Tang].
Treats sudden and violent hematemesis.
Lotus Node [Oujie] (7 nodes), Lotus Leaf Tip [Heye Ding] (7 tips). Grind finely together with honey, decoct in water, remove the dregs, and take warm.
Treats excessive worry damaging the Heart, leading to hematemesis and epistaxis.
Ginseng Root [Renshen] (5 qian), Polygala Root [Yuanzhi] (decored, boiled in Licorice water), White Peony Root [Baishao], Asparagus Tuber [Tiandong], Ophiopogon Tuber [Maidong] (both decored), Astragalus Root [Huangqi], Lotus Node [Oujie], Donkey-Hide Gelatin [Ejiao] (fried with clam powder), Myrrh [Moyao], Angelica Sinensis [Danggui], Raw Rehmannia Root [Sheng Dihuang] (each 1 liang), Licorice Root [Gancao] (honey-fried, 5 qian). Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with ginger water, and take warm.
