Born by inheriting the most Yin Qi from the depths of the earth, its taste is sweet and its nature is greatly cold, with no toxicity. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Whenever disorders caused by rich and greasy foods manifest as carbuncles and swellings, it uses its sweet and cold nature to resolve the constrained heat in the Yangming channel. Therefore, for excess syndromes such as erysipelas (a skin condition resembling cinnabar), back carbuncle, and feverish mania, it can achieve efficacy. However, if there is excess pathogen with deficient healthy Qi, or strong stomach but weak spleen, or toxic swellings in the Yin aspect, its greatly cold nature should be used with caution.
Gan Jiao Gen (Banana Root). (The variety that bears fruit in Sichuan, Shu, Min, Guang regions is used, not the common Ba Jiao nearby). Juice extracted and taken orally. It mainly treats epidemic febrile diseases causing fever, mania, and distress; dryness and thirst caused by mistakenly taking mineral drugs; postpartum abdominal distension and distress (with miraculous effect); when collected all and pounded into a paste for external application, it removes Chi You Dan Du (red wandering toxin) in children, and treats Fa Bei Yong Ju (back carbuncle/ulcer), wind rash, and head sores in adults, with divine efficacy and immediate response.
Jiao You (Banana Oil). Used for rinsing with water in cases of vexation and thirst; applied to beard and hair to turn them black. For An Feng Xian (hidden wind epilepsy) and fainting/dizziness due to distress, drink urgently; one episode of vomiting leads to recovery. The fruit can be eaten as food; steamed and heated to extract the kernel, it moistens the Heart and Lungs, generates body fluids, unblocks blood vessels, and fills the marrow. Although Ba Jiao Gen has similar properties, medical formulas do not record its rescuing efficacy, but extracting its oil can also darken hair.
Jin Xing Cao (Venus Grass). Resolves toxicity and reduces swelling, specializing in surgical conditions. For any initial malignant sores, provided they are un-ulcerated Yang toxins, including Luo Li (scrofula along the neck), Fa Bei Yong Ju (back carbuncle/ulcer), or those already ulcerated, they can be ground and taken with wine, or powdered and swallowed with wine, or decocted for washing, or pounded into a paste for external application, all establishing divine efficacy. Roots pounded and applied with pure sesame oil to the head promotes abundant hair growth.
Fo Er Cao (Ear-Buddha Grass), commonly called Huang Hao (Yellow Mugwort). People often harvest and pound it mixed with rice flour to make pastries, which are soft and delicious. When dried with herbs, using Kuan Dong Hua (Coltsfoot) as an guiding herb, it treats cold coughs and phlegm, especially removing Lung cold and significantly raising Lung Qi. Do not take continuously, as it damages the eyes leading to blindness.
Deng Long Cao (Lantern Grass). Specializes in treating hot coughs, because bitterness eliminates dryness-heat, and its light nature treats the Upper Jiao. Zhu Danxi said: "Deng Long Cao treats hot-phlegm coughs; Fo Er Cao treats cold-phlegm coughs."
San Bai Cao (Three Hundred Grass). Promotes urination and defecation, drives out Qi stagnation in legs and knees, removes fullness and malaria, breaks hard accumulations and expels phlegm, still resolves Ding Zhong (carbuncles), and particularly repels Ji Ju (masses/accumulations).
She Han Cao (Snake-Holding Grass). Removes evil Qi from the heart and abdomen, Bi syndrome due to dampness, Yong Ju (carbuncles/ulcers), hemorrhoids, Shu Lou (scrofula/malignant ulcers), and bad sores; also used for snake, scorpion, bee, and wasp stings. Pounded into a paste, it can reconnect severed fingers. The root is named Nv Jing; powdered and carried on the person, it prevents epidemic miasma, mainly treats Gu Du (poisonous蛊毒) and drives away evil, kills ghosts and demons to ward off misfortune.
