Punica Granati Pericarpium (Shiliupi, Pomegranate Peel): Sour and astringent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. Punica Granati Pericarpium can stop clear leakage, treat leukorrhea with blood or white discharge, chronic dysentery with slippery diarrhea, all possessing astringent properties; it can also be decocted to wash the eyes to stop tearing. Decoction for oral administration expels roundworms (Ascaris). Eating the seeds generates fluids and relieves thirst. However, excessive consumption damages the Lungs and teeth, causing teeth to turn black, and causes stagnation in the chest/diaphragm leading to phlegm formation.
Cocos Nucifera (Yezhi, Coconut): Resembles a large gourd in size. Its shell is sawn open to make vessels; if placed with toxic food and no reaction occurs, toxicity is indicated. The flesh, when consumed regularly, benefits Qi deficiency of the Heart and treats paralysis and hemiplegia due to wind. The juice resembles milk; drinking it can induce intoxication. Applied to beard and hair, it turns them black, moistens the throat, and relieves thirst.
Torreya Grandis Semen (Feizi, Torreya Seed): Born from Earth Qi, sweet and astringent in taste, slightly bitter, cool in nature, non-toxic. Stir-fried, it tastes sweet and delicious; roasted, its nature becomes hot. Excessive consumption draws fire into the Lungs and damages the Large Intestine. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Its bitter and cold nature clears damp-heat. As a fruit of the Lung organ system, it clears Ascariasis lumbricoides (Taenia) above and treats intestinal hemorrhoids below, curing heat-warmth diseases affecting the Lungs and internal organs. To treat Taenia, eat seven Torreya seeds daily for seven consecutive days until the worms dissolve into water. Su Dongpo’s poem states: "Expel the three Peng parasites, relieving my abdominal disease," referring to its vermifuge action. Those who enjoy eating tea leaves and have a sallow complexion likely have parasites; eat seven Torreya seeds daily until cured. For severe cases, eat twenty-one seeds on an empty stomach daily; within a few days, the worms will be expelled. Torreya seed primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids, removing the root cause, killing three types of parasites which then dissolve into water, strengthens bones and tendons, tonifies Yang, regulates Ying and Wei circulation, and stops coughing. Avoid consuming with goose meat. Torreya peel is incompatible with Mung Bean (Vigna radiata), and concurrent use may be fatal.
Eriobotryae Folium (Pipaye, Loquat Leaf): Endowed with Heaven and Earth’s clear-cold Qi, remains evergreen throughout the four seasons, bitter in taste, neutral/cool in Qi (neutral implies cool), non-toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Due to its cool nature and ability to direct Qi downward, it descends Fire, clears the Lungs and Stomach, treating vomiting, hiccups, Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome), Lung-heat wheezing and coughing, Hong Jiao Shang Chong (ascending gouty attack), and women’s fever with coughing and early menstruation. These effects rely on its cool, moistening, and Qi-directing-downward properties. Brush off the hairs on the back before use. For Stomach disorders, brush with Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi, Ginger Juice) and roast. For Lung disorders, brush with Honey Water (Feng Shui, Honey Water) and roast. If hairs are not removed thoroughly, they may enter the Lungs, causing difficult-to-treat coughing. Eriobotryae Folium clears the Lungs, harmonizes the Stomach, directs Qi downward, eliminates persistent vomiting and reflux, resolves coughing, and treats incessant heat-cough. The fruit is sweet and sour, nourishes the Five Zang organs; small amounts stop vomiting and relieve thirst, while excessive amounts generate Heat and Phlegm. The bark of the wood also enters medical prescriptions, primarily treating vomiting and inability to ingest food.
