To treat urinary retention, use two or three stalks of the white part of green onion (Congbai), cut each stalk into four slices. Simmer with half a small cup of milk for a short while, divide into four doses, and take orally; urination will then become unobstructed. If the infant refuses to drink milk, administration of this remedy will induce milk drinking.
Another prescription:
To treat oliguria with dysuria.
Red Poria (Chifuling), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maimendong), Juncus Effusus (Dengxin), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi), decoct in water and take orally.
To treat simultaneous obstruction of both large and small intestines in infants, use one stalk of lotus root and one stalk of the white part of green onion (Congbai). Remove the soil from the lotus root, add one piece of fresh ginger, twenty-one grains of prepared soybean (Danshichi), and one small spoonful of salt. Pound all ingredients into a paste, form into a cake, warm it, and apply it to the umbilicus. Secure tightly with a cloth. After a considerable time, when qi circulation is restored, urination and defecation will naturally resume. If still obstructed, apply another cake.
To treat deficiency of the Heart channel in children, where pathogenic heat takes advantage of the deficiency, causing restlessness and confusion. The pathology transmits downward, resulting in dark, scanty, painful, and obstructed urination, as well as pain in the Liver region.
Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), Akebia Stem (Mutong), Licorice Root (Gancao) [one variation adds Scutellaria Root (Huangqin)], use Bamboo Leaf (Zhuye) as a guide. Decoct in water and take warm.
The essence of the five flavors that is clear and light nourishes the five Zang organs. The dregs of the five flavors that are turbid and heavy return to the Large Intestine. If there is no bowel movement for several days, accompanied by abdominal distension, fullness, and pain, chest oppression with nausea, dry throat and constipation, and a sensation of internal heat and vexation, this indicates accumulation of pathogenic heat internally, drying up the body fluids, leading to dryness and roughness of the Large Intestine and stagnation of qi. Immediate purgation is required; otherwise, prolonged internal heat stagnation will prevent qi movement and resolve stagnation, inevitably transforming into wind syndromes.
To treat deficiency-type constipation in infants, use three stalks of the white part of green onion (Congbai). Decoct in water, remove the onion residue, add fried Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) and raw honey until dissolved. Take before meals.
To treat deficiency-type constipation in infants.
Licorice Root (Gancao), Bitter Orange (Zhiqiao) [each 1 qian], decoct in water and take before meals.
To treat excess-heat constipation of the Zang-Fu organs.
Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao) [Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice], Rhubarb (Dahuang) [steamed with wine], Uncaria Hook (Gouteng), Gardenia Seed (Zhiziren), Licorice Root (Gancao), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) [equal parts]. Grind into fine powder, mix with hot water, and take orally.
Although sound originates from the Lung, its root lies in the Kidney. For newborns, if the voice is clear and resonant, and the spirit is calm with stable sleep, this indicates sufficient congenital endowment, non-deficiency of the Heart and Kidney, and harmonious interaction between Water and Fire. If the infant fails to cry out, producing only suppressed sounds or weak grunts, indicating a lack of coordination between upper and lower qi, this signifies insufficiency of fetal qi. Even with daily medication, since the root is already withered, there is little benefit. Only hoarseness caused by wind-heat invasion is unrelated to fetal origin; however, it should also be treated urgently. If neglected, both Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney) will be damaged, leaving both mother and child in distress.
