If cerebrospinal fluid leaks from the nose, persists for a long time without healing, and breath becomes foul-smelling, this is Brain Cold (Nao Leng). If there is pain at the occipital bone, eyes closed and unable to open, or cold pain at the temporal region, frowning and crying, with red and swollen eyes, this is Brain Heat (Nao Re). However, the brain originates from Marrow (Sui), and Marrow originates from Essence (Jing). Furthermore, treating upper disorders by addressing the lower: for Brain Cold, warm and tonify its Essence and Blood; for Brain Heat, clear the head and eyes, cool the Liver and Gallbladder. This is what is meant by "Cold is treated with warmth," where warming implies tonification; "Heat is treated with cooling," where cooling implies purgation.

Newborns who do not urinate are so because during gestation, the mother consumed toxic substances such as fermented grains and wine, allowing heat qi to enter the fetus. Consequently, upon birth, the abdomen is distended, and both the umbilicus and kidneys are swollen. If the skin around the umbilicus appears cyanotic/black and the mouth is puckered, these are signs of death. If there is only non-urination without refusal to nurse, one may use methods to unblock orifices and promote flow. In cases of complete obstruction of both urine and stool with abdominal distension nearing rupture, this is due to blocked orifices and stagnant qi. It is advisable to have the mother hold warm water in her mouth and suckle the infant's chest area and below the umbilicus until the skin turns red. The blockage will naturally resolve shortly thereafter; this is an effective method for dredging congestion and guiding obstruction.
The Small Intestine is the Fu organ of the Heart. Water qi flows through the sinuses and benefits according to qi movement. If Heart Qi is obstructed, urination is difficult; if Heart Qi is cold, urination is dribbling; if Heart Qi is cold, urination is frequent; if Heart Qi is hot, urination is arduous; if Heart Qi has accumulated heat, urine will be red initially and turn white later.
Furthermore, the Kidney governs water, and the Bladder is its Fu organ. When the Bladder is full, it drains into the Small Intestine. The Small Intestine corresponds upward to the Heart. Yin cannot exist without Yang; water cannot exist without fire. When Water and Fire interact harmoniously, Upper and Lower intersect, Ying and Wei circulate, and the water passages function properly. If Heart and Kidney are disharmonious, internal and external barriers form, blocking the water passages. Transmission becomes abnormal: slippery and hot water passages lead to obstruction, while cold ones lead to incontinence. If testicular retraction occurs within seven days of birth, it is also caused by initial exposure to cold.
