Treats deficiency and decline of the lower origin (Lower Yuan, referring to Kidney essence and Yang), heavy sensation in hands and feet, night sweats, caused by excessive sexual indulgence.
Burmese Psoralea Fruit (Pouzoliae Fructus, 4 liang, stir-fried until fragrant) Chinese Dodder Seed (Cuscutae Semen, 4 liang, steamed with wine) Walnut Kernel (Juglandis Semen, peeled, 1 liang) Agarwood (Aquilariae Lignum, 1.5 qian, ground into fine powder) Form pills with honey, size of *Clerodendrum* seeds, take 30 pills per dose, swallow with warm salt water or warm wine on an empty stomach. For those with severe deficiency of Middle Qi (Middle Jiao Qi), take with Ginseng Decoction. Start taking from the Summer Solstice, stop at the Winter Solstice, one dose per day. During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Grand Marshal Zhang Shou obtained this prescription while serving as Prefect of Guangzhou from the Southern Barbarians. The poem reads: "Three years' seasons towards the frontier corners, / Only when people believe do they know the medicine's power is unique; / Seizing the spring light to hold in hand, / Young beauties, do not laugh at my white beard and mustache."
Treats Spleen-Kidney Yang Deficiency Cold, emaciation and deficiency of Blood and Qi, loss of appetite, fever and night sweats, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea (white turbidity), physical emaciation, swollen teeth, etc. The Kidney is the root of congenital constitution (Pre-heaven), and the Spleen is the root of acquired constitution (Post-heaven). If these two roots are damaged, the aforementioned symptoms will appear. Hence, premature aging occurs; if these two roots are consolidated, old age can be returned to youth.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 2 liang) Chinese Yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Achyranthes Root (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine) Lycium Fruit (Lycii Fructus, soaked in wine, 1.5 liang) Cornus Fruit (Corni Fructus) Poria (Poria, mixed with milk) Eucommia Bark (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice until fibers break) Polygala Root (Polygalae Radix, remove heart) Schisandra Fruit (Schisandrae Fructus, stir-fried) Immature Bitter Orange (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, steamed with wine) Cistanche Stem (Cistanches Herba, soaked in wine, 1 liang) Fennel Fruit (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried) Morinda Root (Morindae Officinalis Radix, soaked in wine) Acorus Tuber (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 5 qian) Add date pulp and honey to form pills, swallow with salt water or wine. In another formula, replace Poria with Spirit of Poria (Poria cum Ramo Quercus) and add Dipsacus Root (Cynanchi Stauntonii Radix), named "Da Lao Er Wan" (Old Beater Pill). It is so named because a woman over a hundred years old beat her old son who refused to take this pill. This consists of herbs for the Hand-Foot Shaoyin (Heart-Kidney) and Taiyin (Spleen-Lung) meridians. Between the two kidneys lies the Fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), which is the True Yang of the congenital constitution. All daily human activities rely on this fire. If this fire is weak, it cannot steam and warm the Spleen and Stomach, leading to reduced food intake and daily decline of Essence and Qi. Cistanche and Morinda can enter the Blood aspect of the Kidney Meridian, Fennel enters the Qi aspect of the Kidney Meridian; together they supplement the insufficiency of the Gate of Vitality. When the fire is vigorous, the Earth element becomes strong, and the Spleen can transport and transform effectively. Prepared Rehmannia and Lycium are herbs that nourish Water; sufficient Water can balance the Fire, preventing it from becoming hyperactive and harmful. Eucommia and Achyranthes tonify the waist and knees to assist the Kidneys; Poria and Chinese Yam drain damp-heat to assist the Spleen; Cornus and Schisandra generate Lung fluids and consolidate Essence; Polygala and Acorus unblock Heart Qi to interact with the Kidney; Dates tonify Qi and nourish Blood, moisten the Lungs, and strengthen the Spleen; Immature Bitter Orange assists Yang and tonifies deficiency, fills muscles, and strengthens bones. This is a formula that balances Water and Fire and simultaneously tonifies the Spleen and Kidney.
