The formula transmitted by Wang Tieqiao (courtesy name Shixiang) of Hangzhou uses a pair of wild pheasant feet (male and female), baked dry on tiles, ground into an extremely fine powder, and stored in a porcelain jar. For any heel abrasions caused by wearing nail-studded shoes that have become ulcerated, or for scrapes and breaks on the legs and knees, applying this powder externally will lead to scabbing and healing. This recalls the Chuijin Gao (Blowing Salve) from Qingtuo Temple in Shandong, which is most effective for treating heel injuries. Now that I have obtained this formula, there is no need to seek remedies from afar.
The Taiyi Zijin Ding (Great One Purple Gold Pill) formula originates from the Daozang (Daoist Canon). It is recorded in the *Wei Ji Bao Shu Xu Tian Fang* (Supplementary Formulas of the Precious Book for Protecting Life), compiled by Yuan dynasty scholars, under the name "Shenxian Jiedu Wanbing Wan" (Immortal's Antidote for Ten Thousand Diseases). It is attributed to Yu Liangneng, passed down through the Ge family. The formula details specific guiding herbs for various conditions and can also rescue those who have attempted suicide by hanging or drowned (by grinding the pill with cold water and forcing it down the throat). It is said that the military governor of Shaoxing Prefecture once administered this medicine; his son had drowned and appeared dead, but was revived using this method.
To treat epidemic swelling and Datou Wen (Big Head Plague, a warm disease characterized by severe swelling of the head and face), use two he of black beans, stir-fried until cooked, and two cun of honey-fried Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草). Decoct in two bowls of water, and sip frequently. This is known as the Jingkang Yiren Fang (Jingkang Strange Person's Formula). (In the second year of Jingkang, a major plague struck the capital, and a strange person wrote this formula.) Additionally, here are some examples: The *Shengji Zonglu* treats red and white dysentery using half a sheng of black beans, stir-fried and peeled, ground into four he of powder, one liang of Licorice Root wrapped in cotton, decocted in three sheng of lake water until reduced to one sheng, divided into two doses. The *Hongshi Jiyan Fang* treats swollen feet by decocting black beans and Licorice Root and drinking the soup. The *Shouqin Yanglao Xinshu* treats various summerheat conditions in the elderly and children during winter, using three sheng of large black beans washed clean, three liang of finely cut Licorice Root, and six sheng of water, boiled until soft and tender. Feed the patient thirty to fifty beans at a time, and the juice may also be drunk. Wu Xiaozheng in *Huoren Yishu* states that to detoxify alchemical pills, one should drink a decoction of black beans and Licorice Root. This formula has broad applications, all relying on its ability to detoxify and clear heat. Liu Songfeng noted that honey-frying Licorice Root adds tonifying properties. Therefore, raw Licorice Root should be used, which is indeed correct.
The Da Huoluo Dan (Great Meridian-Activating Pill) in the *Shengji Zonglu* is largely similar in ingredients to the modern Huisheng Zaizao Wan (Revive and Regenerate Pill). The Da Huoluo Dan contains fifty ingredients, differing from the Zaizao Wan by eight: White Flower Snake (Baihuashe, 白花蛇), Black-spotted Snake (Wushaoshe, 乌梢蛇), Aconite Root (Caowu, 草乌), Cyathula Root (Guanzhong, 贯众), Costus Root (Muxiang, 木香), Agarwood (Chenxiang, 沉香), Liquid Amber (Shui Anxi Xiang, 水安息香), and Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩). The Zaizao Wan contains fifty-six ingredients, differing from the Da Huoluo Dan by fourteen: Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎) one liang, Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩) one liang two qian, Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi, 白芷) one liang, Mulberry Mistletoe (Sangjisheng, 桑寄生) one liang, Hainan Incense (Hainan Xiang, 海南香) one liang, Cardamom Seed (Caokou Ren, 草蔻仁) one liang, Himalayan Mint Talc (Tianzhu Huang, 天竺黄) one liang, Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie, 萆薢) eight qian, Safflower (Honghua, 红花) eight qian, Turmeric (Jianghuang, 姜黄) one liang, Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) one liang, Amber (Hupo, 琥珀) one liang, Qich She (Qishe, 蕲蛇) four liang, Pangolin Scales (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲) four liang. The forty-two shared ingredients are: Ginseng (Renshen, 人参) one liang, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 白术) eight qian, Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) one liang, Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草) one liang, Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi, 熟地) one liang two qian, Red Peony Root (Chishao, 赤芍) eight qian, Angelica Sinensis (Danggui, 当归) one liang, Polygonum Multiflorum (Shouwu, 首乌) one liang, Cinnamon Bark (Rougui, 肉桂) one liang two qian, Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) eight qian, Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, 麻黄) one liang, Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng, 防风) one liang, Spirit Nettle Root (Weilingxian, 威灵仙) one liang, Asarum Root (Xixin, 细辛) one liang, Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo, 羌活) two liang, Kudzu Root (Gegen, 葛根) one liang, Gastrodia Rhizome (Tianma, 天麻) one liang, Silkworm (Jiangcan, 僵蚕) one liang, Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香) one liang, Myrrh (Moyao, 没药) one liang, Clove (Dingxiang, 丁香) one liang, Agastache (Huoxiang, 藿香) one liang, Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu, 香附) eight qian, Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi, 青皮) eight qian, Litsea Fruit (Wuyao, 乌药) eight qian, Pine Resin (Songxiang, 松香) six qian, White Cardamom Seed (Baikou Ren, 白蔻仁) eight qian, Drynaria Rhizome (Gusuibu, 骨碎补) one liang, Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen, 玄参) eight qian, Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian, 黄连) one liang, Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄) one liang, Dragon's Blood (Xuejie, 血竭) eight qian, Arisaema with Bile (Danning, 胆星) one liang, Turtle Plastron (Guiban, 龟板) one liang, Tiger Tibia (Hu Jinggu, 虎胫骨) one pair, Rhino Horn (Xijiao, 犀角) eight qian, Two-headed Point (Liangtoujian, 两头尖) one liang, Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 牛黄) three qian, Scorpion (Quanxie, 全蝎) one liang five qian, Earthworm (Dilong, 地龙) eight qian, Borneol (Bingpian, 冰片) two qian, Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) eight qian. These are ground into a fine powder, formed into pills with honey, each weighing one liang two qian, coated with gold foil, dried in the shade, and sealed in wax shells. This formula treats stroke paralysis, flaccidity and bi-syndrome with phlegm syncope, spasms and pain, whole-body numbness, carbuncles and sores with flowing pus, traumatic injuries, pediatric convulsions, and amenorrhea in women. The *Zunsheng Bajian* states that those over forty should take several doses preventively to avoid madness in old age, but those over sixty should not take it. Xu Lingtai believed that stubborn phlegm, evil wind, heat toxins, and blood stasis invading the meridians cannot be penetrated without this formula; it is an essential drug for treating major limb diseases. (*Huixi Yi'an* notes it is also effective for deficiency-phlegm flowing abscesses.) There is also a Huoluo Dan in medical texts containing only five or six ingredients such as Earthworm and Frankincense, which is a formula for treating excess pathogens.
While residing in Hangzhou as a licentiate and working as a barber, I paid attention to medicine. My ancestors practiced surgery (Yangyi), and although their books were lost, I still remembered many secret formulas. There is a residue from firing Shengdan (Sublimated Mercury) found in general stores; grinding it together into a fine powder and sprinkling it on wounds yields miraculous effects. (Ulcerated feet that itch and weep fluid, making walking impossible, are commonly called "Jiao Zhu" (Foot Rot) in the south. Sprinkling Alum powder on Foot Rot does not stop the itching but increases pain. Our family's secret formula uses old tobacco pipe residue sprinkled on the area to dry dampness and stop itching, which is quite effective.)
Zheng Zhuoyan (courtesy name Fengqiang) from the same county loved single-ingredient prescriptions. He stated that the four most effective ones he experienced were: In the Renyin year of the Daoguang era, while teaching at the residence of Military Commander Wang in Leping, a hard lump appeared behind the scrotum near the anus, gradually becoming painful, with alternating symptoms of deficiency-cold and deficiency-heat. On his desk was the *Tongshou Lu*, where he found a formula stating: For early-stage Kuama Yong (Horse-Straddling Abscess), use five qian of Licorice Root, decocted in one bowl of wine and one bowl of water. Following the prescription, the lump softened, and the next day slight clear fluid drained out. Within a few days, he fully recovered. At the home of my elder cousin Shanhu, a maid aged sixteen or seventeen suddenly developed red rashes resembling heat sores, spreading from the back to the chest, with reduced appetite. Experts identified this as Shechan Ye (Herpes Zoster/Shingles), saying it was incurable if it reached the heart. Accidentally checking the *Huisheng Ji*, he found a formula using the broken hoop from a fecal scoop (locally called "Liaozi"), preferably old and heavily used (not necessarily broken), calcined on a new tile until preserved in nature, mixed with sesame oil and applied. Within a few days, the scabs fell off, and her appetite returned to normal.
A miraculous formula for Houfeng (Wind-Throat, acute laryngeal edema) involves soaking green plums in salt until moisture exudes, then placing large slugs (Yanyou, 蜒蚰) inside, quantity unspecified. During the autumn examination results announcement in the Jiawu year, a banquet was held. One guest suddenly suffered severe throat pain as if choked, in critical condition. Giving him one prepared slug-soaked plum to swallow restored him to normal, and he could eat dinner that evening. On the Dragon Boat Festival at noon, collect late silkworm moths (locally called Tou'er Can), place them in a bamboo tube, seal tightly with paper, and hang in a windy place exposed to rain and sun for less than forty-nine days. If someone later gets a bamboo or wood splinter embedded in flesh that cannot be removed, grind this substance into powder, mix with saliva, and apply to the wound; the splinter will immediately emerge. An elderly woman in the Cai family of Tongli had a bamboo splinter in her hand causing pain that prevented laundry; applying this cured her.
A newlywed man fell ill. Various physicians treated him for deficiency, administering mixed tonics, causing his condition to deteriorate daily. Famous physician Shen Gengwen (from Tongxiang, later residing in Zhucun) examined him, noticing many new lacquered dowry items in the bedroom. He said: This is injury from lacquer fumes (locally called Qi Yao/Lacquer Bite), not a disease. He instructed taking fir sawdust from a carpenter's shop, decocting it in water for washing, and administering antidotes for lacquer toxicity. He recovered quickly. Note: The *Kunyuan Shibao* mentions a case of a newlywed suffering from lacquer bite misdiagnosed as wind-toxin disease, unaware it was triggered by new lacquered wedding items. Wiping with concentrated Alum decoction yielded results in three or four applications. Dr. Shen's insight aligns with this.
Wang Shengzuo from Xiuning reported: At a young age, he suddenly suffered from Changhong (Intestinal Bleeding/Bloody Stool), having one bowel movement every morning with more blood than stool. After two months, he became emaciated. Someone transmitted a formula: Boil Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 白术) in earthenware pot water, consume lightly, one qian per day. He recovered completely before consuming one liang. If the medicine matches the syndrome, why value quantity?
If hair is accidentally ingested forming a trichobezoar (Mao Shi), feeling like insects moving up and down in the chest and throat, ancient formulas used decoctions of fungi from old wooden combs buried in soil. Since this is unavailable, another formula uses five qian of Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) mixed with water. To identify this syndrome, look for a craving for drinking oil; the patient feels relief after drinking four or five sheng, as hair in the stomach is wrapped in blood and transforms into worms.
My friend Qian Shilin (Shangshe title) was extremely filial. His mother, Lady Xu, suffered from chronic Wind-Dampness that frequently recurred. Shilin tried every method to cure her, eventually finding Sea Wind Vine Flowers (Haifengteng Hua, 海风藤花), pairing them with red dates, and brewing/drinking them with aged wine. This brought efficacy, and regular use prevented recurrence, allowing her to live past eighty. Jiang Yinfang (name Guang) from Haining occasionally suffered from Huodan (Erysipelas/Dan Du), with red, swollen, and painful arms unresponsive to other drugs. He later obtained a formula: Grind Lily Bulb (Baihe, 百合) into fine powder, mix with white sugar, mash, and apply topically. It healed quickly. This formula is rare among physicians, cheap, and fast-acting; it is worth transmitting.
Medical texts state that for Liver-Stomach Qi Pain, dry Rose Flowers (Meiguihua, 玫瑰花) in the shade, brew in water, and drink as tea. Tang Zhiqing made a paste from Longan Meat (Longyanrou, 龙眼肉), which cured the epigastric pain of Mrs. Wu Luosheng's mother. One enters the Spleen to harmonize Blood, the other enters the Liver to move Blood; both tonification and draining are suitable, hence the efficacy.
*Bao Shoutang Jingyan Fang* (Three Volumes), written by Liu Tianhe of the Ming Dynasty, contains precise formulas. The formula for treating diarrhea with poor appetite is particularly simple and ingenious. Take one sheng of rice, soak in water overnight, drain and dry, stir-fry slowly until extremely hot, grind fine and sieve like flour. Mix with one liang of powdered Huaiqing Yam (Shanyao, 山药). Every morning, take half a zhan, add one teaspoon of rock sugar and a little pepper powder, and mix with boiling water to eat. The taste is excellent, not cloying, highly nourishing, and beneficial for long-term use. Men with cold essence unable to conceive may also succeed, likely due to the Yam. This is a secret formula; do not underestimate it.
My worker Wu Facai suffered from Dajiaofeng (Severe Leg Bi-Syndrome/Swelling). My mother, Lady Zhou, transmitted a single formula: Use Haotong Pi (Phellodendron Bark, 海桐皮), Stephania Root (Fangji, 防己), Slice of Turmeric (Pian Jianghuang, 片姜黄), and Raw Silkworm Sand (Yuancansha, 原蚕砂), each three qian, and Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu, 苍术) two qian. Decoct for fumigation and washing, three to four times daily. He recovered. (Many have been cured by this formula.) After recovery, excessive walking caused his feet to ulcerate, unresponsive to other drugs. Lady Zhou instructed sprinkling fine powder from ancient tomb iron slag (Duanshi, 锻石) on the wounds, which healed them. Later used for leg ulcers, it was universally effective.
Ancient Ya Sheng (counter-magic) methods were sometimes effective for illness. The *Baiyi Xuanfang* states: Secretly write the local prefect's name on clean paper, burn to ash, and take with water to facilitate childbirth. Shen Congxian said: I once saw names of upright gentlemen written, burned to ash, taken with water to treat difficult labor, binding the left arm of males and right arm of females with a clean cloth to treat Ghost Malaria (Gui Nie, 鬼疟) effectively. People in Fujian still write the name of Mr. Lin of Longjiang to treat various strange syndromes, following the legacy of the selected formulas. Xu Yuting from Wujiang transmitted a malaria treatment that is also effective: Write "Spirit Position of Yellow Emperor Zhuanxu" on one piece of Yunpian Cake, cover with another piece so the characters are hidden, and have the patient eat it two hours before the malaria attack begins.
