Book: Bao's Throat Condition Family Treasure (Bao Shi Hou Zheng Jia Bao)
Author: Bao Sanshu

Chapter: Attached Formulas (Fu Fang)
Category: Comprehensive
Qing Yao (Green Medicine) has the effects of eliminating phlegm, clearing heat, resolving toxicity, and dispelling wind. Its medicinal nature is mild and gentle. It does not act as swiftly as Huang Yao (Yellow Medicine) in reducing swelling and toxic qi, opening throat obstruction, and expelling phlegm and saliva, which are considered most miraculous and agile. However, Qing Yao is the primary and most essential medicine. Nevertheless, in the initial stage of throat conditions, Huang Yao should not be used in large quantities because its potency penetrates directly into the interior and is good at dispersing. If used excessively at the onset, it may overwhelm a mild condition, causing the medicine to mismatch with the disease pattern. Generally, when preparing Qing Yao, spring and summer seasons favor more Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and less Zhi Fan (Alumen Preparatum), resulting in a green color; autumn and winter seasons favor more Zhi Fan and less Bohe, resulting in a slightly white color. If one wishes to induce expectoration in throat conditions, adding a small amount of Zaojiao Mo (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Powder) is permissible. Only in cases of Hou Yong (Throat Abscess) and Dan Ru E (Unilateral Tonsillitis) of mild severity can Qing Yao be used alone for efficacy. For other conditions, it must be combined with Huang Yao to achieve miraculous results. However, when using Qing and Huang medicines together, knowing the sequence and dosage is the most crucial principle.
Qing Yao Formula treats all throat, tongue, tonsillar, and throat abscess conditions.
Use 3 fen of Zhi Fan (Prepared Alum). First, prepare 5 li of Baicaoshuang (Soot from Cooking Pots), grind finely, add 5 li of Dengcaohui (Ash of Juncus Effusus), and grind again until it forms a tile-gray color. Then add 2 fen of Fengcao Mo (Powdered Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and 2 fen of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), grind finely, and finally add 5 li of Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum). This medicine must be prepared fresh for use; if kept for many days, it becomes ineffective. In rainy weather, it can be used for only one day. For blowing powder into the throat to induce expectoration, add Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) and Zaojiao Mo (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Powder), each 3-4 li. However, Qing Yao is suitable for use alone only in mild cases of unilateral tonsillitis or throat abscess. For other conditions, it must be combined with Huang Yao.
Method for Preparing Alum (Zhi Fan Fa): Grind raw Mingfan (Alumen) into an extremely fine powder. Place it in a silver-lined pot, filling it halfway. Insert the pot into a furnace fueled by charcoal sticks. Melt using fire, stirring with copper chopsticks until no alum lumps remain. Then, add Gunxiao (Refined Potassium Nitrate) ground into fine powder, accounting for about one-fifth of the volume, followed by Baipengsha (White Borax) ground into powder, also one-fifth. Shortly after, gradually add the remaining alum powder. Wait until the alum is completely melted, then add a little more Gunxiao and Pengsha layer by layer until exhausted. Wait for the alum to cool; the surface will rise like a steamed bun. Remove from the furnace, cover the pot mouth with a new tile, and seal it. Take out a small amount of Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), grind into powder, mix with 5-6 spoons of water, and sprinkle evenly over the alum. Return the pot to the fire to dry. Remove the pot and invert it on a clean surface lined with paper. Cover the inverted pot with a bowl. Leave for seven days and nights before retrieving and storing. The best quality is light and free of vertical cracks. Pay attention to the fire control: start slowly, but not too slowly, lest the alum hardens and fails to melt. After melting, use alternating strong and weak fire. If Gunxiao and Pengsha are added before the alum is fully melted, it will not fuse properly and will become solid with vertical cracks. Select a pot that has never held molten silver. Heat the pot on fire first, but do not place it directly on charcoal fire to avoid warm air entering the pot.
Method for Obtaining Baicaoshuang (Soot): Select soot near the bottom of the pot. Do not use soot from the center of the pot bottom or the rim. Gently scrape off the top layer, take the middle layer lightly for use, and do not use the layer touching the bottom.
Huang Yao Formula effectively reduces swelling and expels phlegm, treating all oral and tongue conditions.
Use 1 qian 8 fen of Zhi Gunxiao (Prepared Potassium Nitrate), 4 fen of Sheng Puhuang (Raw Polygoni Cernui Pollen) ground finely, 1 fen of Zhi Jiangcan (Prepared Bombyx Batryticatus) powder, and 1 qian 5 li of Zhi Zaojiao (Prepared Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) powder. Grind these ingredients uniformly until they form a pale goose-yellow color. Add 1 fen of Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) and grind uniformly again. Bingpian must be ground finely and cleanly. This formula is specifically used for toxic conditions such as tooth biting, heavy tongue, and chuan ya ding (tooth-piercing carbuncle). For throat conditions, combine with Qing Yao. Adjust the dosage based on severity: add Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) for severe cases; for throat conditions and Chan Hou Feng (Wind Entangling the Throat), add Jiangcan and Zaojiao powders; for other conditions, only Gunxiao and Huang Yao (likely referring to the base components or specific yellow herbs) are needed.
Method for Preparing Gunxiao (Potassium Nitrate): Select long, white, tooth-like, dense Gunxiao. For 1 jin of nitrate, use 8 bowls of water. Boil in a pot until reduced to 6 bowls. Remove and place in a wide-mouthed, pointed-bottom clay basin. Place three bamboo strips in a "pin" character shape inside the basin. Leave overnight; the nitrate will naturally crystallize. Lift the bamboo strips from the bottom, and the nitrate will rise. Prepare this in the twelfth lunar month for long-term storage. After the twelfth month, the taste becomes bland and nature neutral. Alternative method: Dip in warm water, blot dry with cotton paper, wrap in paper, and place in a stove hole for 5-6 days to remove moisture. When white as frost, it is ready. If urgent, unprocessed nitrate can be used.
Method for Preparing Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus): Fine, straight bodies with small abdomens are male; coarse, curved bodies with large abdomens are female. Use males. Brush off dust and sand with a toothbrush. Roast slowly on a tile until sauce-colored. Break in half; the interior should have no connecting silk threads.
Method for Preparing Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus): Select hard, small, non-borer-infested pods. Roast on a tile until bright and crisp. Remove both ends and grind into powder.
Method for Preparing Baiyaojian (Ten Thousand Medication Decoction): Use 1 jin of Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) ground into powder, 1 liang of Xi Ercha (Fine Child's Tea/Catechu), and 4 liang of Jiaotou (Ferment Starter). Boil 2 bowls of water with the tea, extract half a bowl of concentrated juice. Mix with Wubeizi powder and ferment starter. Place in a basin, cover the mouth, and insulate tightly with coarse rice husks on all sides. After 6-7 days, it rises like dough. Shape into cakes, sun-dry, and grind into powder. (The second half of this preparation method is lost and incomplete.)
Method for Preparing Qingmei (Green Plum): Crush 1 jin of large green plums. Mix with 0.5 jin of Mingfan (Alumen) powder. Place in a Yangcheng pot. Heat until the alum dries up. Remove and place on the ground to dissipate heat.
Method for Opening Jaw Lock (Kai Yaguan Fa): If throat conditions cause jaw lock, first prick the Shaoshang (LU11) acupoint on both thumbs with a silver needle (located on the radial side of the thumb, about the width of a leek leaf from the nail corner; tenderness indicates the point, belonging to the Lung Meridian). Allow bleeding. Then rub teeth upper and lower with Wu Mei (Mume Fructus). Blow Jiangcan and Zaojiao powder into the nose to induce sneezing, which opens the mouth. This is a secret method. Immediately blow Huang Yao powder three times, followed by Qing Yao for aftercare.
Puhuang (Polygoni Cernui Pollen) should be used raw and ground finely. Sieve through a mesh to obtain very fine yellow powder. Coarse, brownish powder is unsuitable.
Main Decoction for Throat Conditions:
Dali Zi (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, Sovereign, stir-fried and ground, 1 qian)

In summary, teeth are the exterior indicator of the Kidney and the remainder of bone. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian passes through the upper gums. The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian passes through the lower gums. External infections usually involve wind-heat of these two meridians or cold-wind transforming into heat. Internal injuries involve Kidney heat or Kidney deficiency.

Lu Hui Xiao Gan Yin (Aloe Vera Decoction for Resolving Gan Disease): Used for Zou Ma Ya Gan (Running Horse Dental Gangrene), often occurring after residual toxins from smallpox/measles are unclear, compounded by severe heat from mixed conditions.
If gums rot, smell foul, turn black and necrotic, and eventually fall off with socket decay, leading to cheek perforation and lip rupture within days, it is incurable. Use this decoction externally with Renzhongbai (Urinae Humanis Depuratum) or Bingpeng San (Borneol and Borax Powder) to apply. Removing black flesh to reveal red, bleeding flesh is auspicious. If stubborn flesh does not detach, necrosis spreads, swelling erupts outward, odor persists, and fever remains, it is incurable. All pediatric cases of Zou Ma Ya Gan with fever, rough breathing, rotten gums, and cheek/lip perforation must take this.
Ingredients: Lu Hui (Aloe), Yin Chai Hu (Stellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Da Li Zi (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shi Gao (Calcitum), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (Each 5 fen), Ling Yang Jiao (Capris Cornu) (3 fen), Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba) (3 fen).

Grind all into fine powder. Rinse mouth with warm water before blowing powder into the affected area 6-7 times daily. Saliva flowing out is auspicious; saliva being drawn in indicates deep toxin and is ominous.

Crush 0.5 jin of Chuan Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis). Boil several times. Add 4 liang of Chen Song Luo Cha (Old Song Moss Tea). Add Da Li Zi (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) without fixed dosage.
