(There are twenty-four formulas of Guizhi Tang and five formulas of Mahuang Tang in the later section of *Baoming Ji*.)
The manifestations and syndromes contracted through the Six Meridians (Liu Jing) of Shanghan (Cold Damage), combined with decoctions and pills for sweating, purging, vomiting, harmonizing, and resolving, are detailed in Zhang Zhongjing's *Huoren Shu* and Yun Qizi's *Baoming Ji*. Those recorded in detail there are not repeated here; those absent from books and the modifications of various formulas according to syndromes are now recorded below.
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction to Establish the Middle): Treats deficiency consumption with internal urgency and various insufficiencies; this formula should be used as the primary treatment.
Herbs: Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced, each 2 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 6 liang), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Jiaoyi (Maltose, 1 sheng), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces, split).
Crush the seven herbs. Boil the first six herbs in seven sheng of water until three sheng remain. Remove the dregs, add Jiaoyi, and stir until dissolved. Take one sheng warm, three times a day. If there is vomiting, add Guizhi and Shengjiang. If there is abdominal fullness, remove Dazao and add Fuling (Poria) 4 liang. If there is lung deficiency damage and insufficiency with痞气 (stagnant qi mass), add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 5 liang.
If women suffer from blood pain or men from heart and abdominal pain, accompanied by severe stiffness and pain in the four limbs, add Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) half a liang. If there is vomiting or diarrhea resembling Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome), or if cold-dampness and thief wind enter the abdomen causing stiff and acute pain, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) 7 qian half. If Shanqi (Hernia) attacks, add about one spoonful of honey when decocting Fuzi Jianzhong Tang. If men and women have various deficiencies and insufficiencies, with acute pain in the lower abdomen, distension in the hypochondrium, emptiness and fullness below, irritability and palpitations in the chest, sallow complexion, dry lips and mouth, lack of strength, heavy body, shortness of breath, stiffness and pain in the waist and back, soreness and pain in bones and flesh, panting and fatigue upon movement, inability to eat, or due to excessive labor injury or failure to recover after illness, add Huangqi 1.5 liang. If women have all kinds of blood and qi deficiency damage, postpartum labor injury, emaciation and insufficiency, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, acute pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the waist and back, spontaneous sweating, and loss of appetite, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang; this is named Danggui Jianzhong Tang (Danggui Decoction to Establish the Middle). Taking it three times daily for half a month after childbirth can strengthen essence.
Da Jianzhong Tang (Great Decoction to Establish the Middle): Treats internal deficiency with internal urgency, shortness of breath, cold extremities, cramping in the lower abdomen, or abdominal fullness with wiry and acute tension preventing food intake. Upon rising, slight sweating occurs; there may be retraction of the genitals, unbearable cold pain in the abdomen exacerbated by labor, dry lips, tongue, and mouth, spontaneous emission of essence, alternating cold and heat in the hands and feet with vexation, acid discomfort, and inability to stand steadily. This formula tonifies the middle and benefits qi.
Herbs: Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, each 3 qian), Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, each 1 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 0.5 fen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2.5 qian), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces).
Crush the herbs. Boil in five cups of water until three cups remain. Remove dregs and divide into three doses.
Yijian Xingzi Tang (Simple Apricot Kernel Decoction): Treats cough, regardless of whether caused by external contraction of wind-cold, internal injury from raw/cold food, deficiency consumption with hemoptysis, or phlegm-fluid retention.
Herbs: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, halved), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, halved), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, halved), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus).
Crush the herbs. For each dose, take 4 qian, add 1.5 cups of water, five crushed apricot kernels (Xingren, Prunus armeniaca seed, peeled and cored), and five slices of ginger. Boil until 60% remains, remove dregs, and take.
If caused by cold damage, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) in equal proportion. If the spleen and stomach are naturally solid, use Yingkesu (Papaveris Pericarpium, poppy shell) removed of membranes, crushed, vinegar-fried, in equal proportion added to the dose, along with one Wumei (Mume Fructus, mume fruit) boiled per dose for better effect. Not suitable for retching and nausea. For chronic cough with qi deficiency and panting, remove Xingren and Renshen, double Mahuang, add Shaoyao equal to the amount of Mahuang, and increase Gan Mahuang and Wuweizi by half; this is named Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction).
Da Bu Shiquan San (Great Tonifying Ten-Perfection Powder):
Herbs: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 3-5 qian weighed), decocted with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) in water. Used for weak women, beautifully named "Ten-Perfection".
Treats various deficiencies and insufficiencies in men and women, five labors and seven injuries, loss of appetite, chronic disease damage, periodic tidal fever, qi attacking bone joints causing stiffness and pain, nocturnal seminal emission, sallow complexion, weakness in legs and knees, panting and cough with abdominal fullness, weak spleen and kidney qi, five-center heat and oppression. All are treated.
Detailed Herbs: Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (equal parts). Grind into coarse powder. Each dose: two large qian, one cup of water, three slices of Shengjiang, two Dazao. Boil until 70% remains, take warm at any time.
Analysis: Rougui, Shaoyao, and Gancao constitute Xiaojianzhong Tang (Minor Decoction to Establish the Middle). Huangqi plus these three constitutes Huangqi Jianzhong Tang. Renshen, Fuling, Baizhu, and Gancao constitute Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction). Chuanxiong, Shaoyao, and Danggui constitute Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Since both qi and blood are declining, and yin and yang are both weak, heaven obtains the completed number of earth, hence named Shiquan San (Ten-Perfection Powder).
Yijian Weifeng Tang (Simple Stomach-Wind Decoction): Treats adults and children where wind-cold enters the intestines and stomach due to deficiency, causing undigested food, profuse diarrhea, and intestinal-stomach damp-toxin discharge resembling bean curd juice, or bloody stool without day or night limits.
Herbs: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (equal parts). Crush. Each dose: 2 qian, one large cup of water, over 100 grains of Sumi (Pollen Oryzae, rice pollen). Boil until 70% remains, remove dregs, take slightly warm on an empty stomach. Reduce dose for children according to capacity.
If adding Shudihuang, Huangqi, and Gancao in equal parts, totaling ten ingredients, it is named Shibu Tang (Ten-Tonification Decoction). For deficiency consumption cough, add Wuweizi. For phlegm, add Banxia. For fever, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix). For sweating, add Muli (Ostreae Concha). For deficiency-cold, add Fuzi. For severe cold, add Ganjiang. All added in equal parts to the base formula. For bone-steaming fever with normal diet, use Shibu Tang plus 2 liang of Chaihu. For shortness of breath, add Renshen. For difficult urination, add Fuling. For wiry and choppy pulse, add Chuanxiong. For aversion to cold, add Guanzi Gui. For choppy pulse, add Danggui. For abdominal pain, add Baishaoyao (White Paeonia Root). For stomach heat and dampness abundance, add Baizhu. For purple blood stasis (old blood), add Shudihuang. For bright red fresh blood, add Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). For chills and fever, add Chaihu. For muscular heat, add Digupi (Lycii Cortex). For surging and solid pulse with severe pain, add Jiuhuang Da Huang (Rhubarb soaked in wine). Jiegu said: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) is the upper envoy, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is the middle envoy, Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix) is the lower envoy.
Qianli Jiang (Thousand-Li Juice), also known as Shui Hulu (Water Watermelon):
Herbs: Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Zisuye (Perillae Folium), Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each half liang), Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus pulp), Chi Fuling (Red Poria) (each 1 liang). Grind into fine powder, make pills with refined honey the size of a bullet. Hold in mouth to dissolve and swallow saliva.
Another Formula: Baiyaojian (Fermented Medicinal Pill), Wumei Rou, Zisuye, Renshen, Gancao, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber). Equal parts, grind into fine powder, make pills with refined honey to hold in mouth.
Lizhi Tang (Lychee Decoction):
Herbs: Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus pulp), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Baiyaojian (1 liang), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (half liang), Baitan (Santalum Album Wood) (3 qian). Grind into fine powder, take with soup, honey, and wine.
Hao Mi (Good Honey, 2 jin), Water (one bowl), Xi Qu (Fine Yeast, 1.5 jin), Hao Gan Jiao (Good Dry Yeast Starter, 3 liang). First boil honey and water, skim off foam, let cool completely. Add yeast and starter. Stir three times daily. Ferment for three days until ready.
