Whenever a person has suffered from Hongxiangjiao (a disease characterized by swelling, heaviness, pain, or numbness in the lower legs and feet) for a long time without realizing it differs from other conditions, later it may be triggered by another illness. After treatment leads to recovery, direct vomiting occurs, accompanied by weakness in both legs. Upon pulse diagnosis, I informed him that this was Hongxiangjiao. The patient said, "I have never had swollen feet in my life; why is it called Hongxiangjiao?" He refused to take the decoction. I considered it an initial onset; within his hesitation and doubt, he died in less than ten days. Therefore, Hongxiangjiao cannot be rigidly defined by the presence of swelling. There are cases with swelling and cases without. In those presenting with hardness, numbness, and insensitivity in the lower abdomen, the feet are mostly not swollen. If lower abdominal numbness is followed by vomiting within three to five days, it is named "Hongxiangjiao entering the Heart." Such cases face imminent death. Any case of Hongxiangjiao affecting the Heart is difficult to treat because Kidney Water overcomes Heart Fire.
The pathology originates from Wind-Dampness-Toxic Qi clashing with the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney governs Water; now being constrained by pathogenic factors, Kidney Qi fails to circulate freely. Fluids do not transmit to the Small Intestine, causing Water Qi to stagnate and overflow into the Zang-Fu organs, soaking the skin, thus resulting in swelling and fullness.
Wen Shen Tang (Warm the Kidney Decoction) from Qianjin Yi Fang: Mainly treats swelling and immobility of the waist, spine, knees, and feet.
Fuling (Poria), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Zexie (Alisma) (each 2 liang), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (3 liang).

Another prescription for early-stage Hongxiangjiao starting from the foot up to the knee, with calf swelling and bone pain:
One dose of black ox urine (1 sheng), taken twice daily. Stop when swelling subsides. For emaciated patients, mix two parts urine with one part cow's milk, boil together until the milk coagulates, then consume.
Another method: One raw pig liver, finely chopped, eaten with mild garlic paste until finished. Divide into two meals.
Cui Shi's Prescription for Generalized Swelling in Hongxiangjiao:
Da Dou (Soybean) (2 large sheng), Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Bark) (one handful, cut), Binglang (Areca Seed) (14 pieces), Fuling (Poria) (2 liang).

Grind the above four herbs into powder. Take one cun bi (measure) with wine, three times daily.
Prescription for soreness and pain in hands and feet with slight swelling:

Soak the single herb in 1 sheng of wine overnight. Drink as needed.
Tang Shizhong's Prescription for Severe Hongxiangjiao Attacking the Heart: This formula effectively dissipates swelling qi. Highly effective.
Binglang (Areca Seed) (7 pieces), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (2 liang), Jupi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Wuyu (Evodia Fruit), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit) (each 1 liang).

Qianjin Fengyin Tang (Thousand Golden Wind-Attracting Decoction):

Pound all herbs into powder. Soak in 5 jin of sesame oil. Spring: 5 days; Summer: 3 days; Autumn: 7 days; Winter: 10 days. When time is sufficient, place in a clean large pot and simmer slowly until herbs are dry and float. Let sit off heat briefly, filter dregs through a cloth bag, and weigh the oil accurately. For every 1 jin of oil, add 6 liang of sealed Huangdan (Lead Monoxide). Stir constantly with peach or willow branches until black as lacquer and bright as a mirror. Test by dropping into water; if it forms beads, spread on cloth for application. (Apply 1 fen of Muxiang (Musk) to the affected area when using this plaster.)
Fengyin Tang (See Jin Gui Yao Lue).
Jiming San (Chicken Crowing Scattering Powder) (See Shi Fang Ge Kuo).
This is the premier remedy for Hongxiangjiao, suitable for both men and women. If suffering from Wind-Dampness flowing into collaterals, unbearable foot pain, and swollen meridians, this should be taken. Adding Lurong (Deer Antler Glue) yields miraculous effects.
