Add water, filter through silk gauze, and boil down to a paste. Alternatively, add four jin of honey and take on an empty stomach. Initial doses may cause heat sensation, phlegm discharge, fullness, or increased hunger. Long-term use lightens the body and strengthens the bones. It treats food stagnation, poor appetite, dampness-induced edema, weakness in the four limbs, excess in sexual activity and alcohol consumption, injury from overwork or lack of exercise, bone-steaming fever, and phlegm-fire syndromes. Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) has an extremely potent aroma and unblocks the Spleen and Kidney meridians. The ancients said: "If you wish to live long, you must consume the mountain essence," referring to this herb. Another formula adds three jin of Shitan Ye (Foliium Nandinae), two jin of Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii), and two jin of Chushizi (Fructus Broussonetiae).
Modified Cangzhu Paste: Ten jin of Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), pounded into mud, placed in a large pot with two buckets of water. Boil using alternating mild and strong fire until about ten bowls remain. Filter through silk gauze and pour into a porcelain jar. Take on an empty stomach with wine or broth. This formula unblocks all joints in the body, flows through hair follicles, and nourishes Essence, Qi, and Spirit. Start with twenty pills, increasing by ten pills every ten days up to one hundred pills. Take on an empty stomach with salt water or warm wine.
