The Heart is the Fire Zang organ, the master of the body, and the residence of Shen (Spirit). The *Xiaozhuan* (Small Seal Script) once stated: the character for "Heart" in seal script is merely an inverted character for "Fire." This is because the Heart belongs to Fire but does not wish for the flame to blaze upward; thus, it is inverted to demonstrate the subtlety of harmonizing and regulating. Zhu Wugong said: A single stroke by Pao Shi, when vertical, becomes "Shu"; leaning left or right becomes "Pie" or "Na"; shortened, it becomes "Dian"; curved, it becomes "Yi." "Yi" is round and spiritual; "Shu" is square and upright. The changes in characters in the world are myriad, yet none can exist outside the framework of "Shu." Only the character "Heart" desires movement and flow, round and wondrous, abiding nowhere, emerging beyond "Shu," such that no other character can be found to pair with it. Precisely because "Heart" (Xin) sounds like "New" (Xin), as the official of Spirit, it changes and renews daily. The Heart governs the Blood vessels. If the blood vessels renew daily, continuously and without cessation, one becomes a healthy person (Ping Ren); otherwise, disease occurs. (It correlates with the vessels, its luster manifests in the complexion, and it opens into the tongue.)
The Liver is the Wood Zang organ, where Hun (Ethereal Soul) resides. "Liver" (Gan) implies "trunk" (Gan), due to its physical form resembling branches and trunks. It is located in the East and governs the Qi of growth and generation. Contemporary physicians, ignorant of this principle, claim there is no method for tonifying the Liver and advocate using cooling and purging methods. They cling solely to the theory of Wood overcoming Earth, failing to understand the imagery of the Later Heaven Bagua combined with the *Hetu* (River Map). Three and Eight correspond to nails/claws [symbolizing Wood] residing in the East, which corresponds to the positions of Zhen and Xun in the Later Heaven. When Xun is above and Kun below, it forms the Hexagram Guan (View). The *I Ching* states: "Observing the divine way of Heaven, the four seasons do not err." With Kun above and Zhen below, it forms the Hexagram Fu (Return). The *I Ching* states: "Does not Fu reveal the Heart of Heaven and Earth? Its meaning is great indeed!" (It correlates with the tendons, its luster manifests in the nails, and it opens into the eyes.)
The Spleen is the Earth Zang organ, storing Yi (Intellect) and Zhi (Willpower). It resides below the Heart and Lungs, hence deriving from the concept of humility/subservience. "Spleen" (Pi) implies "assist" (Bi), assisting Stomach Qi to transform food grains. The *Classic* states: "When grain is accepted, prosperity ensues." Does this not refer to this function? (It correlates with the flesh, its luster manifests in the lips, and it opens into the mouth.)
The Lung is the Metal Zang organ, where Po (Corporeal Soul) resides. "Lung" (Fei) implies "abundant/flowing" (Pei). Within are twenty-four pores, distributing clear and turbid Qi to circulate among all Zang organs, making it abundant and unstoppable. The *Neijing* states: "The Lung dislikes cold." It also states: "External cold affecting the form and cold drinks injuring the interior will damage the Lung." Do not adhere rigidly only to the theory of Earth overcoming Metal. (It correlates with the skin, its luster manifests in the hair, and it opens into the nose.)
