In any disease where wind-cold pathogens are involved, one should immediately abstain from meat, fish, and greasy foods, take small doses of diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) medicines, and wait until the external pathogens are completely expelled before using nourishing foods for tonification. Generally speaking, in the convalescence of carbuncles and swellings, it is indispensable to consume nutritious foods, as animal products can generate human flesh and blood. However, one should not overeat, lest the cloying nature of meat overpower the transforming power of grains; more importantly, one must avoid raw, cold, and qi-stagnating foods, fearing they may damage the Spleen and Stomach. One should also avoid wind pathogens, refrain from anger, reduce excessive thinking, speak little, and prioritize careful preservation of health. Regarding post-illness care, for severe toxicity, sexual abstinence is recommended for three years; for mild toxicity, for one year. Violating these rules leads to deficiency syndromes, hemiplegia, or a shortened lifespan, so caution is essential. Other precautions such as refraining from anger and avoiding wind should be treated with the same seriousness as when one is still ill.
The above ten methods constitute the general principles for treating carbuncles and back-sores. Major cases can be understood through them, and minor cases can be inferred. Throughout my life, I have favored treating external diseases, and my core methodology lies herein. It is concise yet comprehensive, accurate, and practicable. The names of various diseases affecting the entire body are detailed below for reference.
(Duixin Fa, Shenshu Fa, Dabe, Shoufa, Zu Fa)
A sore occurring on the back is named "Fabei" (Back Carbuncle), caused by Fire-Toxin in the Lung Meridian. A sore occurring on the lower back, opposite the heart, is named "Duixin Fa" (Opposite-Heart Carbuncle), caused by Fire-Toxin in the Heart Meridian. A sore occurring on the waist is named "Shenshu Fa" (Shenshu Carbuncle), caused by Ministerial Fire-Toxin in the Kidney Meridian. If it occurs on the shoulder and spine, it is named "Dabe" (Shoulder-Back Carbuncle); right-sided cases are due to Lung Fire, while left-sided cases are due to Liver Fire. A sore on the dorsum of the hand is named "Shoufa" (Hand Carbuncle), and one on the dorsum of the foot is named "Zufa" (Foot Carbuncle), both caused by Damp-Heat-Toxin in the Spleen Meridian. Some resemble lotus seeds, with multiple protruding heads; others resemble honeycombs, with multiple depressed pores and external crust formation resembling snail shells. In these two types, one must guard against toxin sinking inward. Generally, this condition arises from rich and fatty diets, or from the invasion of Six Exogenous Pathogens and internal stagnation of Seven Emotions, leading to accumulation that fails to disperse, causing Ying-Qi (Nutritive Qi) to become disordered and逆流逆乱 (reverse flow/disorder) within the muscle tissue. Upon initial swelling and pain, medication should be used to dissipate the condition. If dissipation fails, moxibustion and pus-draining methods should be employed. Carbuncles and ulcers initially present as Heat syndromes but often transform into Cold syndromes in their late stages; this distinction must not be overlooked.
