The Liver opens into the eyes, the Heart opens into the tongue, the Spleen opens into the mouth, the Lungs open into the nose, and the Kidneys open into the ears. The essence and qi of the Five Zang organs ascend to the head, forming the five sensory organs (Wu Guan).
The three Yang meridians of the hand (Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian) travel from the hands to the head. The three Yang meridians of the foot (Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian) travel from the head to the feet. The head is the gathering place for the six Yang meridians of the hands and feet. The Five Zang organs belong to Yin; when Yin reaches its extreme, it generates Yang. Yang Qi has the nature of being clear, light, and void, tending to ascend. When clarity and emptiness reach their peak, Shen Ming (Spiritual Illumination) emerges. The five Shen (Spiritual activities) manifest outwardly, opening the seven orifices upwards. Sounds, colors, odors, and flavors are distinguished here. The sensory organs and orifices are the portals for Shen Qi (Spirit Qi).
When Clear Yang ascends, the seven orifices remain empty and agile. When Turbid Yin rebels upward, the five sensory organs become obstructed. Clear Yang ascending and Turbid Yin descending is a fixed principle. In youth and vigor, Clear Yang ascends and Turbid Yin descends, resulting in emptiness above and fullness below. In old age and decline, Clear Yang sinks and Turbid Yin rebels, resulting in emptiness below and fullness above. The emptiness and agility of the seven orifices are due to the "emptiness" above. The obstruction of the five sensory organs is due to the "fullness" above. This "fullness" arises from "emptiness," and this "emptiness" arises from "fullness."
The Liver belongs to Wood; its color is Green (Qing); its odor is Pungent/Fishy (Sao); its flavor is Sour; its vocalization is Shouting (Hu); its fluid is Tears. The Heart belongs to Fire; its odor is Scorched (Jiao); its flavor is Bitter; its vocalization is Laughing (Xiao); its fluid is Sweat; its color is Red. The Spleen belongs to Earth; its flavor is Sweet; its vocalization is Singing (Ge); its fluid is Saliva (Xian); its color is Yellow; its odor is Fragrant (Xiang). The Lungs belong to Metal; its vocalization is Crying (Ku); its fluid is Nasal Mucus (Ti); its color is White; its odor is Fishy (Xing); its flavor is Acrid/Pungent (Xin). The Kidneys belong to Water; its fluid is Spittle (Tuo); its color is Black; its odor is Putrid (Fu); its flavor is Salty; its vocalization is Groaning (Shen).
Generally speaking, the Liver governs the five colors; the colors of the Five Zang organs are all results of Liver Qi entering them. Entering the Heart becomes Red; entering the Spleen becomes Yellow; entering the Lungs becomes White; entering the Kidneys becomes Black. The Heart governs the five odors; the odors of the Five Zang organs are all results of Heart Qi entering them. Entering the Spleen becomes Fragrant; entering the Lungs becomes Fishy; entering the Kidneys becomes Putrid; entering the Liver becomes Pungent/Fishy. Entering the Lungs becomes Acrid; entering the Kidneys becomes Salty; entering the Liver becomes Sour; entering the Heart becomes Bitter. The Lungs govern the five sounds; the sounds of the Five Zang organs are all results of Lung Qi entering them. Entering the Kidneys becomes Groaning; entering the Liver becomes Shouting; entering the Heart becomes Speech; entering the Spleen becomes Singing. The Kidneys govern the five fluids; the fluids of the Five Zang organs are all results of Kidney Qi entering them. Entering the Liver becomes Tears; entering the Heart becomes Sweat; entering the Spleen becomes Saliva; entering the Lungs becomes Nasal Mucus.
