Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) circulates twenty-five circuits through the Yang meridians during the day and twenty-five circuits through the Yin organs at night. The circulation of Wei Qi typically begins at Yin hour in the early morning, starting from Jingming (BL1, Bright Eye), an acupoint of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Jingming is located at the inner canthus of the eye. In the early morning, Yang Qi emerges from the eyes; when the eyes open, Qi ascends to the head, follows down the neck along the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, reaching the tip of the little toe; then it enters the inner canthus, descends to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, reaching the tip of the little finger; separately entering the outer canthus, it descends to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, reaching the tip of the fourth toe; ascending along the lateral aspect of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, it descends to the tip of the ring finger; separately entering in front of the ear, it descends to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, reaching the tip of the middle toe; separately entering below the ear, it descends to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, reaching the tip of the index finger; upon reaching the foot, it enters the sole of the foot, emerges below the medial malleolus, and enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. The Yin Qiao Mai (Yinchiao Vessel) is a branch of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, connecting at the inner canthus; from the Yin Qiao Mai, it reunites with the eye, intersecting with Jingming (BL1) of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. This constitutes one circuit. Circulating in this manner for twenty-five circuits, when the sun sets, Yang Qi is exhausted and Yin Qi receives Qi. Thus, it enters internally into the Yin organs. Its entry into the Yin organs usually begins from the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, pouring into the Kidney; the Kidney pours into the Heart; the Heart pours into the Lung; the Lung pours into the Liver; the Liver pours into the Spleen; the Spleen pours back into the Kidney. This constitutes one circuit. Circulating in this manner for twenty-five circuits, in the early morning, Yin Qi is exhausted and Yang Qi receives Qi. Thus, it emerges externally into the Yang meridians. Its emergence into the Yang meridians usually starts from the Kidney, proceeding to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and again reunites with the eye. When Wei Qi enters the Yin organs, sleep occurs; when it emerges into the Yang meridians, wakefulness occurs. In one day comprising one hundred ke (time units), it circulates fifty times around the body. This is the measure of Wei Qi. The meaning of Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and Wei Qi following each other as stated in the Nan Jing (Classic of Difficult Issues) is that Ying Qi circulates within the vessels, while Wei Qi circulates outside the vessels, moving in mutual attachment, not implying that they travel together within the same meridian.
