(Stroke due to Wind) When pathogenic wind first enters the Taiyang Palace (Taiyang channel), fever, headache, and increased aversion to wind occur. With sweating and a floating pulse confined to the exterior, the efficacy of releasing the muscle layer relies primarily on Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
For stroke with sweating, use Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), along with Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to treat Ying-nutrient injury. Combined with Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) to tonify the Spleen and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), drinking hot congee generates fluids and nourishes Yang.
(Cold Damage) The pulse presents as floating and tight; aversion to cold, fever, and vomiting/dizziness arise simultaneously. Headache, body pain, and persistent absence of sweat indicate that the exterior excess syndrome suitable for Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) has formed.
Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction)
For cold damage without sweating, use Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), assisted by Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) for good effect. Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) tonifies the Spleen and consolidates Middle Qi; this divine formula reaches directly to the skin and hair follicles.
(Combined Wind-Cold) Symptoms resemble malaria, occurring every two or three days, with a flushed facial complexion and prolonged resolution. If the body itches due to lack of mild diaphoresis, Gui Zhi Ma Huang Ge Ban Tang (Half-Guizhi Half-Mahuang Decoction) is appropriate.
Gui Zhi Ma Huang Ge Ban Tang (Half-Guizhi Half-Mahuang Decoction)
Combining Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), with Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) as suitable auxiliaries, along with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), yields miraculous effects for combined wind-cold.
(Combined Wind-Cold, Formula See Above) The pulse appears surging with frequent sweating; continue administering Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) without changing the prescription. If it recurs resembling malaria, lightly release Wei-protective Qi and heavily release Ying-nutrient Qi.
(Stroke with Internal Fire Stagnation) Fever and aversion to cold manifest obvious exterior disease; thirst and delirium indicate fire-pathogen injury. Floating pulse with sweating suggests relief is possible; this formula lightly releases Ying and Wei.
Guizhi Er Yuebi Yi Tang (Two Parts Guizhi One Part Yuebi Decoction)
When external cold remains unresolved and internal heat arises, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) harmonize the interior, while Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) drains Ying-heat. Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) are combined to release the exterior; Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) treats interior heat to clear fire.
(Stroke with Internal Fire Stagnation) Fever, body pain, and increased aversion to cold cause restlessness and inability to find comfort due to absence of sweat. The stroke pulse is floating and tight; using Qinglong Tang (Azure Dragon Decoction) makes treatment straightforward.
Da Qing Long Tang (Major Azure Dragon Decoction)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) jointly release the exterior to scatter pathogenic wind; adding Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) aids efficacy. Using Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) alone clears interior heat, while Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) combine tonification and attack.
(Cold Damage with Internal Water Stagnation) When exterior pathogens remain unresolved and water retention occurs, vomiting and coughing complicate the condition, making it critical. Obstructed urination accompanied by thirst, fullness in the lower abdomen, and wheezing are inappropriate manifestations.
Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Azure Dragon Decoction)
Exterior cold with interior water stagnation is not a minor illness; the precise medication includes Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Combined with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), it ensures complete pacification of both interior and exterior disorders.
