Treatise
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "When pathogenic factors are excessive, it manifests as an Excess syndrome; when healthy Qi is depleted, it manifests as a Deficiency syndrome." The "pathogens" mentioned in the classics refer merely to the excess of the six pernicious factors—Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire—not to the ghosts or demons spoken of by the common people. Diseases presenting with Heart deficiency, palpitations, and fright, appearing intoxicated or foolish, as if possessed by evil spirits, or due to Yangming Interior Excess (accumulation of heat and dryness in the stomach and intestines), leading to climbing high and singing, or discarding clothes and running, are all caused by Phlegm-Fire (the interaction of phlegm turbidity and fire heat within the body), and are certainly not bewitched by demonic influences. Although ancient times had the discipline of incantations and treatments using the mantra methods of Nagarjuna, these belong to the technique of shifting spirit and transforming Qi (adjusting Qi and blood circulation by altering spiritual intent). They can only resolve doubts and confusion, returning the mind-spirit to orthodoxy; how can they dispel demonic influences?
Zhu Danxi said: Blood and Qi are the material basis for the Spirit of the Heart. If the Spirit is decadent and deficient, pathogens may enter due to this deficiency, which is theoretically possible (Note: This likely refers to fox spirits in mountain valleys). If both Qi and Blood are deficient, and Phlegm obstructs the Chest and Heart, hindering the ascending and descending mechanisms, preventing normal circulation, causing the Twelve Organs to lose their functions, making vision, hearing, speech, and movement illusory and false, then treating with methods that attack pathogens will surely kill the patient. Can one not be cautious?
Pulse Diagnosis
A pulse that is suddenly slow and suddenly rapid, suddenly large and suddenly small, or rapid and intermittent, are all pulses of pathogens. A pulse that is tight and rapid indicates Dunshi disease (a latent toxic qi from dead bodies).
Methods
Zhu Danxi said: What the俗 (common people) call "Chong'e" disease refers to illness caused by clashing with evil ghosts and demonic influences. Those suffering from this invariably do so because their Qi and Blood were previously deficient.
(Above, Zhu Danxi's method consists of one entry.)
The lost chapters of the *Suwen* state: Entering a state of sorrow and worry damages the Heart; being startled depletes Essence, with sweat issuing from the Heart. Or, encountering Shaoyin ruling Heaven (Shaoyin governing the annual climate) where the heavenly numbers are insufficient, resulting in Three Deficiencies (Heavenly, Human, and Visceral deficiencies), causing the Spirit to lose its post.
Since the Heart is the Sovereign Official, from whom the Spirit emerges, once the Spirit loses its post and its light does not gather, and if one encounters a year of insufficient Fire, black corpse ghosts appear, causing sudden death. The treatment is to puncture the passing point of the Hand-Shaoyang meridian, the Yangchi acupoint, and then puncture the Xinshu acupoint to restore consciousness.
Dietary fatigue damages the Spleen; eating until overly full causes sweat to issue from the Stomach; engaging in intercourse after drunkenness and full meals causes sweat to issue from the Spleen. Or, encountering Taiyin ruling Heaven where the heavenly numbers are insufficient, resulting in Three Deficiencies, causing the Spleen Spirit to lose its post.
Since the Spleen is the Advisory Official, from whom wisdom and circumspection emerge, once the Spirit loses its post and its light does not gather, and if one encounters a year of insufficient Earth, green corpse ghosts appear, causing sudden death. One may puncture the passing point of the Foot-Yangming meridian, the Chongyang acupoint, and then puncture the Pishu acupoint to restore consciousness.
Sitting long on damp ground and forcing oneself into water damages the Kidneys; carrying heavy loads over long distances causes sweat to issue from the Kidneys. Or, encountering Taiyang ruling Heaven where the heavenly numbers are insufficient, resulting in Three Deficiencies, causing the Kidney Spirit to lose its post.
Since the Kidney is the Official of Strength, from whom skill and ingenuity emerge, once the Spirit loses its post and its light does not gather, and if one encounters a year of insufficient Water, yellow corpse ghosts appear, causing sudden death. One may puncture the passing point of the Foot-Taiyang meridian, the Jinggu acupoint, and then puncture the Shenshu acupoint to restore consciousness.
Violent anger causing Qi rebellion damages the Liver; running fast and fearing causes sweat to issue from the Liver. Or, encountering Jueyin ruling Heaven where the heavenly numbers are insufficient, resulting in Three Deficiencies, causing the Liver Spirit to lose its post.
Since the Liver is the General Official, from whom strategy and planning emerge, once the Spirit loses its post and its light does not gather, and if one encounters a year of insufficient Wood, white corpse ghosts appear, causing sudden death. One may puncture the passing point of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian, the Qiuxu acupoint, and then puncture the Ganshu acupoint to restore consciousness.
Exposure to cold and drinking cold beverages damages the Lungs; climbing high and running fast causes sweat to issue from the Lungs. Or, encountering Yangming ruling Heaven where the heavenly numbers are insufficient, resulting in Three Deficiencies, causing the Lung Spirit to lose its post.
Since the Lung is the Minister Official, from whom regulation and governance emerge, once the Spirit loses its post and its light does not gather, and if one encounters a year of insufficient Metal, red corpse ghosts appear, causing sudden death. One may puncture the passing point of the Hand-Yangming meridian, the Hegu acupoint, and then puncture the Feishu acupoint to restore consciousness.
My commentary: When people see ghosts of abnormal five colors, it is solely because their own Spirit is not guarded and their Spirit Light is incomplete. It is actually not an invasion by external pathogens, but a sign of extreme depletion of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Because the patient sees it with their own eyes, they truly believe they are bewitched by evil ghosts. However, deducing that companions sitting nearby see nothing is sufficient to resolve this doubt.
Five Evils Acupuncture Methods
Liver deficiency seeing white corpse ghosts, followed by sudden syncope and unconsciousness, is called Zushi (Sudden Corpse) (The names of the Five Evils diseases are the same). If the spirit in the eyes remains unchanged, limbs are cold but the heart and abdomen remain warm, there is no saliva in the mouth, the tongue is not curled, and the testicles are not retracted, acupuncture can restore consciousness.
Qiuxu (two points): Located in the depression below the lateral malleolus of the foot, five cun away from Linqi, it is the Yuan-Source point of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Insert a filiform needle three fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi (arrival of Qi), apply the tonifying method. Retain the needle for three breaths. Withdraw slowly. Press the point and instruct the patient to hold their breath. If abdominal borborygmi occur, it is treatable. Then puncture Ganshu.
Ganshu (two points): Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the ninth thoracic vertebra. Insert a filiform needle three fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for three breaths. Advance two fen deeper, retain for three breaths. Withdraw to three fen depth, retain for one breath. Withdraw slowly. Reversal of Qi mechanism leads to recovery.
Heart deficiency seeing black corpse ghosts, followed by sudden syncope and unconsciousness. Limbs are cold, spirit in the eyes is unchanged, Qi is blocked and severed, but the tongue is not curled and testicles are not retracted. Treatable within one shi (two hours). Acupuncture restores consciousness.
Yangchi (two points): Located in the depression at the back of the wrist, it is the Yuan-Source point of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Insert a filiform needle two fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for seven breaths. Advance one fen deeper, retain for three breaths. Withdraw, retain for one breath. Withdraw slowly. Press the point with the hand to restore consciousness.
Spleen deficiency seeing green corpse ghosts, followed by sudden syncope and unconsciousness. Limbs are cold but body and lips are warm. Treatable within one shi.
Chongyang (two points): Located in the interosseous space on the dorsum of the foot, three cun away from Xangu, it is the Yuan-Source point of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Insert a filiform needle three fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for three breaths. Advance two fen deeper, retain for one breath. Withdraw slowly. Press the point with the hand. Then puncture Pishu.
Pishu (two points): Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the eleventh thoracic vertebra. Insert a filiform needle three fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for two breaths. Advance two fen. When Qi arrives, withdraw slowly to restore consciousness.
Lung deficiency seeing red corpse ghosts, followed by sudden syncope and unconsciousness. Although Qi is absent and hands/feet are cold, the heart/abdomen are warm, nose is slightly warm, spirit in eyes is unchanged, no saliva in mouth, tongue not curled, testicles not retracted. Treatable within one shi.
Hegu (two points): Located between the metacarpal bones of the thumb and index finger, it is the Yuan-Source point of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Insert a filiform needle three fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for three breaths. Withdraw one fen. Retain for one breath. Withdraw slowly. Press the point with the hand. Then puncture Feishu.
Feishu (two points): Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the third thoracic vertebra. Insert a filiform needle one and a half cun deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for three breaths. Advance two fen deeper. Retain for one breath. Withdraw slowly. Press the point with the hand to restore consciousness.
Kidney deficiency seeing yellow corpse ghosts, followed by sudden syncope and unconsciousness. Qi is severed, limbs are cold, heart/abdomen are slightly warm, spirit in eyes is unchanged, lips/tongue are not black, no saliva in mouth. Treatable.
Jinggu (two points): Located in the depression at the junction of red and white flesh below the large bone on the lateral side of the foot, it is the Yuan-Source point of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Insert a filiform needle one and a half fen deep. Upon obtaining Deqi, apply the tonifying method. Retain for three breaths. Advance to three fen. Retain for one breath. Withdraw slowly. Press the point with the hand. Then puncture the Shu point of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian.
The Shu point of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Shenshu): Located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the fourteenth thoracic vertebra. Insert a filiform needle three fen deep.
