There is no sensation of fullness and obstruction in the epigastrium; the inability to eat arises from oneself.
[From *Huangdi Neijing* (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon)] To treat adults and children who cannot take milk or food, [this method] harmonizes Qi and eliminates phlegm. Use Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) four liang, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) one liang, soak in Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice) overnight, dry it, and grind into powder. Make pills with flour paste. Take after meals with Sheng Jiang Tang (Ginger Decoction).
[Li Dongyuan] He Zhong Wan (Harmonize the Middle Pill) opens the stomach and promotes appetite.
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Root) (one qian) Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit) (one piece) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (two qian) Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (one qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (one qian) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (three qian)
Grind the above into powder, make pills with steamed bread paste. Take thirty to fifty pills before meals with warm water.
[From *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang* (Prescriptions of the Public Welfare Bureau)] Qi Zhen San (Seven Treasures Powder) opens the stomach, promotes appetite, tonifies the Spleen, and nourishes Qi.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (honey-fried) Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) Su Mi (Millet Seed) (lightly fried) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (equal parts)
Grind the above into powder. Take two qian per dose, decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube). If there is still no desire for food, add Bian Dou (Lablab Bean) one liang, named Ba Zhen San (Eight Treasures Powder). This formula is warm and neutral without being hot; regular use will double dietary intake.
[Wang Haicang] Liu Shen Tang (Six Gods Decoction) treats deficiency and emaciation due to Shang Han (Cold Damage), with no desire for food.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (each one liang) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) (in one prescription, Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) is used, stir-fried) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each half liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (two qian)
Grind the above into powder. Take five qian per dose, decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Da Zao (Jujube), and a small amount of Jing Mi (Rice Grain). Take before meals.
[Luo Qianfu] Qian Shi Yi Gong San (Master Qian's Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) treats Spleen and Stomach weakness, where food is difficult to tolerate. (Yi Gong San uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Ju Hong (Tangerine Red Peel), and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) in equal parts, decocted with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube).)
Luo Qianfu said: For those with weak Spleen and Stomach and difficulty digesting food, one should not indiscriminately use attacking/draining agents. One should use Qian Shi Yi Gong San (Master Qian's Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) to tonify, and naturally, appetite will return.
If excessive indulgence in food damages the Spleen, leading to fullness, vomiting, and reflux, temporarily use Zhi Shi Wan (Immature Bitter Orange Pill) once, but do not take it frequently. I once treated Mr. Weng who suffered from chronic malaria, with little food intake and profuse sweating. Initially, I used a tonifying formula added with Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange). After more than a month, he could not eat at all, and sweating continued. I then realized the wisdom of Qianfu's words, removed Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and used purely tonifying agents. I also instructed him to consume more porridge than medicine, which improved his appetite. Furthermore, I added Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) three qian half to the original formula. After one dose, he was cured.
[Li Dongyuan] Kuan Zhong Jin Shi Wan (Widen the Middle and Promote Eating Pill) nourishes the physical form and Qi, promoting appetite.
Cao Kou Ren (Grass Cardamom Seed) (five qian) Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (one qian five fen) Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Fermented Paste) (seven qian) Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) (stir-fried, one liang) Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) (stir-fried, four qian) Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (stir-fried, half liang) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (one qian half) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Root) (one qian) Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (three qian) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (five fen) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each two qian)
Zhu Ling (Polyporus) Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (each one qian)
Grind the above into powder, make pills using steamed bread soaked in water. Take thirty to fifty pills per dose with warm water.
He Zhong Wan (Harmonize the Middle Pill) treats chronic illness causing weakness, listlessness, and anorexia, accompanied by constipation or diarrhea. Regular use harmonizes and regulates Qi, eliminates phlegm, promotes eating, removes dampness, and thickens the intestinal walls.
Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) (processed with ginger juice, one liang) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (one and a half liang) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (processed, one liang) Ju Hong (Tangerine Red Peel) (eight qian) Bing Lang (Areca Seed) (four qian) Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) (bran-stir-fried, three qian) Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (two qian half) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (three qian half)
Grind the above into powder, make pills with steamed bread soaked in Sheng Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice). Take fifty to sixty pills per dose, taken well after meals with warm water.
Mu Xiang Zhi Zhu Wan (Aucklandia and Atractylodes Pill) and Mu Xiang Gan Jiang Zhi Zhu Wan (Aucklandia, Dried Ginger, and Atractylodes Pill) open the stomach and promote appetite. (Both formulas are found in the section on Internal Injury due to Diet.)
Jiao Tai Wan (Interlocking Harmony Pill) raises Yang Qi, drains Yin Fire, harmonizes Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), advances diet, assists spirit, and relieves abdominal distension. It eliminates lethargy and propensity to lie down, flaccidity of the four limbs, heaviness, and lassitude.
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (four qian, half raw, half wine-stir-fried, used in spring/summer, reduced in autumn/winter) Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (one qian half) Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) (peeled, stir-fried, three qian. Add seven qian in autumn/winter) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (one qian) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (six qian, reduce by one qian half in autumn/winter) Ku Lian (Meliae Cortex) (wine-boiled, three qian) Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (peeled, one qian) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (three qian) Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Spina) (peeled of skin and string, roasted, six qian) Zi Wan (Adenophorae Radix) (remove roots, six qian) Xiao Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (stir-fried, remove sweat, and select closed ones, one qian half) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (two qian) Chuan Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix) (four qian half) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Root) (processed, three qian) Ba Dou Shuang (Crotonis Semen Paste) (half liang) Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) (washed with hot water, half liang) Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (three qian)
Except for Ba Dou Shuang (Crotonis Semen Paste) which is ground separately and added, grind the rest into fine powder, make pills with honey. Take thirty to forty pills per dose with warm water, adjusting dosage according to deficiency or excess.
[Zhang Yuansu] Ren Shen Ban Xia Wan (Ginseng and Pinellia Pill) descends phlegm and promotes eating. (Formula seen in the Cough section.)
[Zhu Danxi] Treated a man who had taken too many hot medicines, had an irritable temperament, was thin and fatigued, and ate little. It was April. Later, I gave him this formula, divided into fourteen doses. Decoct hot after meals, and take fifteen pills of Da Bu Wan (Great Tonification Pill).
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (one and a half liang) Chao Qu (Stir-fried Mass Medicata Fermentata) (one liang) Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (seven qian) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (six qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (stir-fried) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) (each half liang) Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (each one qian)
Also treated fatigue-induced anorexia.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (three qian) Hua Shi (Talcum) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each one qian)
Decoct in water, take with Bao He Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill) thirty pills.
Treated Hong Zhang Jiao (Hong Kong Foot/Gout) with emaciation and fatigue, and no desire for food.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (two liang) Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each half liang) Bai Bai (Platycladi Cacumen) (seven qian half) Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (one liang)
Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (one liang)
Grind the above into powder, make pills with Ginger Juice paste.
Sorrow and depression damage the Spleen, leading to anorexia.
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (stir-fried) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix) (wine-stir-fried) Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) Qing Liu San Mo (Qing Liu散的粉末) (Formula seen in Dysentery. i.e., Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder) plus Hong Qu (Red Yeast Rice) two liang)
Soak in Ginger Juice, make pills with steamed bread.
Damp-phlegm and Qi stagnation, no desire for grain food: Add Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) to San Bu Wan (Three Tonification Pill), double the amount of Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma).
[From *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang* (Prescriptions of the Public Welfare Bureau)] Treats long-term Spleen Qi deficiency, anorexia, fluid retention with hypochondriac pain, using Qu Zhu Wan (Shenqu and Atractylodes Pill).
Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (stir-fried, ten liang) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (five liang) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Root) Guan Gui (Cinnamon Twig) (each two liang) Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (each three liang)
Grind the above into powder, make pills with thin paste. Take thirty to fifty pills per dose before meals with Ginger Soup. If there is fluid retention, add Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) two liang. This formula has been effective in my own trials.
Er Shen Wan (Two Divine Pills) treats Spleen and Kidney weakness, complete anorexia.
Po Gu Zhi (Morindae Officinalis Radix) (stir-fried, four liang) Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen) (raw, two liang)
Grind the above into powder. Use forty-nine plump dates, four liang of fresh ginger, sliced and boiled together. When dates are soft, remove ginger, peel and pit the dates, grind the flesh into a paste, mix with the herbal powder, and pound into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take thirty to forty pills per dose with Salt Water. Someone who completely lost appetite did not respond to Spleen-tonifying medicines. I taught them this formula, and they immediately regained their appetite. This condition should not be treated solely as Spleen Qi deficiency; it is because Kidney Qi is timid and True Yuan (Original Essence) is depleted, so digestion fails. It is like placing grains in a pot over a fire; if there is no heat below, the rice will not cook all day, how can it be digested? Huang Luzhi once recorded: Wash Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen) clean, soak in wine, dry in the sun, take several spoons daily with wine. After ten days, eating and drinking becomes like snow melting in hot water. This illustrates the principle.
[From *Zhai Xuan Fang* (Selected Mysterious Prescriptions)] Stomach weakness with anorexia, borborygmus and abdominal pain, undigested food: San Li (ST36), San Yin Jiao (SP6).
[Wang Haogu] Fluid retention in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), Qi attack causing anorexia, yellow complexion with slight fever, due to Cold in the Stomach: Wei Dao (GB27), Zhong Feng (LR4), Wei Shu (BL21), Shen Shu (BL23).
[From *Yi Lei Yuan Rong* (Fortress of Medical Origins)] Heat pathogen in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), aversion to food: Guan Yuan (CV4) (moxibustion one cun, along the skin backwards three cun).
[Wang Haogu] Complete anorexia: Ran Gu (KI2) (bleeding leads to immediate hunger.)
When the pulse is floating, slippery, and rapid, food is not digested, and the Spleen does not grind. If the Yang pulse is slippery and tight, slipperiness indicates Excess Stomach Qi, while tightness indicates injured Spleen Qi. Inability to digest food after eating is due to Spleen disharmony. (Treat with formulas like Zhi Zhu Wan (Atractylodes and Immature Bitter Orange Pill).)
[Zhang Zhongjing] The Cun Kou (Inch Position) pulse is faint and choppy. Faintness indicates non-communication of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi); choppy nature indicates non-penetration of Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi). When Ying and Wei cannot support each other, the San Jiao (Triple Burner) has no reliance, leading to body bi (obstruction) and insensitivity. Deficiency of Ying Qi causes headache and difficulty speaking; deficiency of Wei Qi causes aversion to cold and frequent yawning; the San Jiao fails to return to its proper sector. If the Upper Jiao fails to return, there is belching and acid regurgitation; if the Middle Jiao fails to return, there is inability to digest grains and accept food; if the Lower Jiao fails to return, there is enuresis and incontinence. (Treat with formulas like Yi Gong San (Extraordinary Efficacy Powder).)
