[Da Guan Ben Cao] Generally, childbirth has its own timing. Before the signs of labor appear, one must absolutely not forcibly administer drugs for inducing labor or promoting fetal expulsion, unless circumstances leave no other choice. It is also stated: One must absolutely not allow the parturient to sit on the birthing mat too early, nor allow midwives to interfere recklessly. (For all labor-inducing drugs, they can only be administered after severe lower back pain occurs, the fetus descends, and the amniotic fluid breaks.)
[Zhu Danxi] For inducing labor, only Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) should be used; it is the safest and most effective. (The formula is found in General Discussion on Women's Diseases, which is Xiong Gui Tang [Ligusticum Chuanxiong and Angelica Sinensis Decoction].)
Cu Sheng Ru Sheng San (Labor-Inducing Like-Sage Powder)
Take a small half-he of Huang Shu Kui Zi (Abelmoschus manihot seeds), or two qian according to another version. Grind them into a paste, filter through wine to remove dregs, and take warm. The effect is miraculous. In cases of difficult labor due to bleeding leading to dryness and extreme pain, take three doses consecutively.
After a while, the qi in the abdomen will feel relaxed, and the fetus will slide out easily for delivery. This should only be taken when true labor signs are present. The song says: "Fry seventy Huang Kui Zi seeds, grind finely and mix with wine to relieve your urgency; if you encounter life-threatening dystocia, it saves the whole family from weeping."
[Zhu Danxi] Another prescription: Mix equal parts of Sesame Oil, White Honey, and Urine, each half zhan. Mix with Yi Mu Cao Mo (Leonurus japonicus powder) and take orally.
Another prescription: Use only oil, honey, and urine; this can facilitate difficult labor.
[Mi Lu] Treats transverse presentation where the baby cannot emerge. Take Che Qian Zi Mo (Plantago asiatica seed powder) and swallow with wine, two qian bi per dose.
[Da Guan Ben Cao] Cu Sheng Zuo Mu Yin Zi (Labor-Inducing Oak Wood Drink) treats dystocia, whether transverse or breech presentation, or putrefied dead fetus causing abdominal distension. This formula has proven miraculous repeatedly.
Large Zuo Mu branches (one large handful, one chi long. Wash clean, cut into cun segments, use raw) Gan Cao (large pieces five cun long, cut into five segments).
Add three sheng half of fresh drawn water to a new porcelain bottle together with the herbs. Seal tightly with three layers of paper. Decoct over mild fire until reduced to one sheng half, until fragrant. When the parturient feels heavy lower back pain and desires to sit on the birthing mat, drink one small zhan warm. (Do not take if there is no sense of heaviness or pain in the waist.) You will immediately feel relief in the chest. If thirsty again, drink another zhan. After drinking three to four zhan, when you feel heaviness in the lower body and urge to defecate/void, birth will occur. This formula is highly effective.
[Mei Shi] Treats dystocia where the fetus obstructs in the abdomen, such as when the head is visible but the placenta does not deliver, or fetal death. Take Ji Li Zi (Tribulus terrestris fruit) and Bei Mu (Fritillaria cirrhosa bulb), each four liang, grind into powder. Take one spoonful with rice water. If the baby is not born after traveling four or five li, take another dose.
Another prescription: Take one piece of Tong Ming Ru Xiang (Olibanum), size like a Gleditsia sinensis pod, grind into powder. At the onset of back pain, take one small zhan of fresh drawn water, add a little vinegar, decoct together. Have the mother hold a Shi Yan (a type of stone/fossil) in each hand. The midwife prepares the medicine. After drinking, she sits on the mat and gives birth immediately without pain. Excellent efficacy.
Another prescription: Kai Gu Gao (Bone-Opening Ointment). Grind Ru Xiang finely. On the noon hour of the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, make pills using dripping water, sized like a chicken head. Take one pill per dose, swallowed with non-intoxicating wine.
Another prescription: Cu Sheng Shen Xiao Ru Zhu Dan (Labor-Inducing Miraculous Milk-Cinnabar Pill). Grind Ru Xiang finely, bind with pig heart blood into pills sized like tung tree seeds, coat with Cinnabar, and dry in the sun. Take one pill per dose, dissolve in cold wine.
If birth does not occur after a while, take another pill. For severe dystocia, use seven lotus leaf hearts (including the stem base), decoct in two zhan of water until reduced to one zhan. Warm and dissolve one pill in it. If still no birth, another pill may be taken. This medicine is as effective as a spirit. Prepare the medicine at noon on May 5th, July 7th, or March 3rd for best results.
Another prescription: Equal parts of Ru Xiang and Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), grind into fine powder. Take mixed with Rhinoceros Horn (Shexiang - note: text says Shexiang/Musk, usually Musk is Chen Xiang or She Xiang, here likely Musk based on context of strong opening) dissolved in wine.
Another prescription: For back pain. Take one qian of Ru Xiang and Ren Shen (Ginseng), and half a qian of Chen Sha (Vermilion/Cinnabar). Grind finely together. Mix with one egg white. Add fresh ginger juice, let cool, and take. For transverse or breech presentation, it corrects position immediately, ensuring safety for both mother and child.
[Da Guan Ben Cao] Sheng Jin San (Gold-Winning Powder). Question: How to treat dystocia? Answer: A formed mass on the side of the fetus is called Er Zhen (Child Pillow). When the fetus attempts to be born, the pillow ruptures, and the decidual blood wraps around the fetus, causing difficulty. Taking this drug expels the stale blood, allowing natural birth. It treats both malpresentation and transverse presentation.
She Xiang (Musk, one qian) Yan Chi (Salted Fermented Soybeans, one liang, wrapped in green cloth, heated red hot, then ground finely quickly).
Grind into powder. Heat a scale weight until red hot, quench in wine, mix with one qian of powder, and take orally.
Cu Sheng Dan (Labor-Inducing Pill) Treats irregular physiological processes in pregnancy, difficult childbirth, whether transverse or breech presentation.
December Rabbit Brain Marrow (remove skin/membrane, grind into paste) Ru Xiang (Olibanum, separately ground extremely fine, two qian half) Mu Ding Xiang Mo (Mother Clove powder, one qian) She Xiang (Musk, separately ground, one zi).
Mix these three ingredients evenly. Bind with rabbit brain marrow into pills the size of a chicken head. Dry in shade. Wrap in oiled paper. Take one pill per dose with warm water. Birth follows immediately; the infant may be seen holding the medicine.
Sheng Jin Dan (Golden Victory Pill) Treats dystocia, miraculous.
One failed rabbit hair brush tip, burn to ash, grind finely. Mix with one zhan of fresh lotus root juice and take. Birth occurs instantly. If the mother is weak or suffers from chronic cold conditions, fear that the cold nature of lotus root moves qi; heat it in a silver vessel over hot water before taking.
[Cao Ben Shi Yi] Mainly treats dystocia. Crush Yi Mu Cao (Leonurus japonicus), extract juice (seven da he). Decoct until reduced by half. Take in one dose. Birth follows instantly. If fresh herb is unavailable, use a large handful of dried herb, decoct in seven he of water, and take.
[Zhu Danxi] Yi Chan Tian Ma Wan (Easy-Birth Gastrodia Pill)
Tian Ma (Here identified as Yi Mu Cao/Leonurus japonicus, harvested with roots in June, dried).
Grind into powder. Amount unspecified. Bind with refined honey into pills the size of a longan. At the time of labor, chew one pill with warm water. It can cure a hundred postpartum diseases. Dystocia.
Suo Sha (Amomum villosum) Xiang Fu (Cyperus rotundus, stir-fried with vinegar) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) Gan Cao (Licorice) Hua Shi (Talcum).
Grind into powder. Take mixed with plain boiled water.
Induces labor.
Pu Huang (Typha pollen) Di Long (Pheretima earthworm) Chen Pi (Citrus reticulata peel), equal parts. Wash Di Long to remove soil, roast on a new tile until slightly yellow. Grind each into powder. Apply to three points: Umbilicus, Sole of foot. If labor does not proceed after a day, roast one qian bi of each, mix with fresh water, and take orally for immediate birth. I have personally used this; it is very wonderful.
[Da Guan Ben Cao] Cu Sheng Shen Xiao Qi Sheng San (Labor-Inducing Miraculous Seven-Sage Powder) Use only when lower back pain begins during labor.
Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis rhizome) Mo Yao (Myrrh) Bai Fan (Alum) Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) Jiang Huang (Curcuma longa) Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) Gui Xin (Cinnamon heart).
Grind into fine powder. During labor contractions, heat a plow iron until red hot, quench in wine. Mix with three qian of powder. Drink one or two cups. Birth follows instantly.
[Shan Ju Fang] For dystocia, swallow fourteen Huai Zi (Sophora japonica seeds). For breech presentation, heat a copper coin until red hot, place in wine, and drink.
[Da Guan Ben Cao] Treats premature rupture of membranes with excessive discharge of foul fluids, leading to dry fetus unable to descend. First, administer Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish blood and qi. Second, decoct strong scallion water, let cool. Have the midwife wash the vulva carefully to ensure smooth flow of qi up and down. Third, apply Hua Shi Mo (Talcum powder) mixed with butter to the inside of the vulva. Fourth, take Shen Miao Ru Zhu Dan or Kui Zi Ru Sheng San. (See formulas above.)
Cu Sheng Ru Sheng San (Labor-Inducing Like-Sage Powder) Treats breech/transverse presentation and thin fetus.
Bai Cao Shuang (Soot from kitchen chimney) Xiang Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica, avoid direct fire, grind into powder).
Mix equal parts of these two ingredients finely. Take two large qian per dose. At the time of labor, mix with boy's urine and a little rice vinegar to form a paste. Take mixed with boiling water. Ji Yan Fang uses half a zhan of wine and half a zhan of boy's urine, decoct together. Drink hot as soon as it boils. Do not exceed two doses. (Danxi uses Xiong Gui Tang to regulate blood; blood stops bleeding when blackened. This drug strongly consolidates blood, preventing dry difficult birth.)
Another prescription: Treats transverse/breech presentation.
Ming E Jiao (Clear Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried) Hua Shi Mo (Talcum powder, each one liang) Kui Zi (Abelmoschus manihot seeds, two liang).
Decoct in one and a half zhan of water until reduced to one zhan. Remove dregs. Divide into two doses.
Treats dystocia lasting five to six days without delivery, resulting in exhaustion and deficiency. Take two liang of Guang Ming Shui Jiao (high-quality gelatin). Add one and a half sheng of good wine. Roast the gelatin gently over fire. Add one fresh chicken egg and one qian bi of salt. Stir until warm. Have the mother sit on a chair, stretch her back. Drink in large gulps, divided into two servings. When feeling heaviness in urination, birth will occur. This is because sitting on the mat too early disturbed the process.
[Jie Gu] Ban Xia Tang (Pinellia Decoction) Treats dry fetus unable to be born.
Ban Xia Qu (Pinellia fermented pill, one liang half) Da Huang (Rhubarb, five qian) Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark, seven qian half) Tao Ren (Peach kernel, thirty kernels, lightly stir-fried).
Grind into coarse powder. First take Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) one or two doses. Then take Ban Xia Tang. Add three slices of fresh ginger. Decoct in water and take. Another prescription: Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) powder, mix with one fang cun bi, take with wine.
Ru Sheng Gao (Like-Sage Ointment) Treats dystocia, placental retention, and dead fetus.
Seven Bi Ma Zi (Castor bean seeds), remove shell, grind finely into ointment. Apply to the sole of the foot. The placenta will deliver. Wash off quickly; otherwise, intestines may prolapse. Then apply this ointment to the top of the head; the intestines will retract naturally. (Another version: Hundred Bi Ma Zi seeds, one qian Xiong Huang (Realgar), grind finely, apply as above.)
Labor induction, passed down for ten thousand gold. Yu Xian Dan (Encounter Immortal Pill).
Bi Ma Zi (Castor bean seeds, fourteen kernels, removed shell) Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) Xiong Huang (Realgar, each one qian half) She Tui (Snake slough, one chi, burned).
Grind into powder. Mix with Jiang Shui (fermented grain water) and form pills the size of a marble. At labor, first wash the area below the umbilicus with pepper water. Place one pill in the umbilicus. Cover with several layers of wax paper. Tie securely with a wide cloth. Remove the medicine urgently after birth. One pill can be used three times. (Another version: Three Bi Ma Zi seeds.)
[Worldly Tradition] "Three hemp, four beans, strip clothes, grind and add musk. If a woman encounters dystocia, paste onto the umbilicus spanning two fen." (Use three Bi Ma Zi seeds, four Ba Dou (Croton seeds) kernels removed, add musk, grind finely, paste onto umbilicus.)
Li Sheng Dan (Establishing Sage Pill) for critical obstetric emergencies.
Han Shui Shi (Calcitum/Halloysite, four liang). Two liang raw, two liang calcined red. Take the raw ones, grind finely together. Mix with Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) until deep peach blossom color. Use three fen per dose. Mix well water into a thin paste. Cut paper flowers the size of apricot leaves. Spread the paste on the paper flower and apply to the center of the umbilicus. Change when dry. No more than three applications, and birth will occur. Treats malpresentation, adverse signs, and retained dead fetus. Miraculous efficacy. Han Shui Shi is not Fang Jie Shi (Gypsum Fibrosum), but what people today call soft gypsum. This formula was transmitted by an unusual person in the early dynasty. Wonderful.
[Tu Jing Ben Cao] Induces labor. Have the parturient hold one Shi Yan (stone) in each hand. The baby will be born shortly.
Save from dystocia, not delivering after many days. Yun Mu Fen (Mica powder), half liang. Mix with warm wine and take. Birth occurs upon entering the mouth, never failing. (Lu Shi says: Has saved three to five hundred people, effective.) Treats transverse/breech presentation and irregular labor mechanics. Use Fu Long Gan (Dragon's House Soil/Hematitum), grind finely. Take one qian per dose, mixed with wine. The soil attaches to the baby's head and helps push it out. Wonderful.
[Worldly Tradition] Ru Shen San (God-Like Powder) treats labor induction with cumulative miraculous effects. Although hard to explain theoretically, it is factually very effective. At the time of labor, send someone to find an old straw sandal on the road. Burn the ear of the sandal to ash. Mix with warm wine and take three qian bi. If the left foot is found, a boy is born; if the right foot, a girl. If upside down, the baby dies; if on the side, the baby will be startled. This medicine is truly magical. Using this to deliver the Cu Sheng Wan (Labor-Inducing Pill) is especially wonderful.
[Dong Yuan] When a woman is about to give birth, if the membrane ruptures prematurely, foul fluids flow continuously, sitting on the mat too early, lacking blood to nourish, leading to depletion: Du Yin (Acupoint, five fen, located between the third joint of the little toe) Cheng Yin (Acupoint, one cun five fen).
[Yu Ji Wei Yi] Induces labor, dystocia, and dead fetus: Tai Chong (Eight fen, tonify for one hundred breaths) He Gu (Tonify) San Yin Jiao (Five fen, sedate, resolves immediately).
Zu Xiao Zhi Jie (Little toe joint, three moxa cones, extra point in Xin Shu). Fetus rising upward pressing on the heart: Ju Que (Have patient sit upright, hold head and waist slightly leaning back. Needle enter six fen. Retain for seven breaths. Sedate upon obtaining deqi. Immediate revival. Signs: If the fetus grasps the mother's heart, needle marks appear on the palm after birth. If the fetus presses the heart, marks appear on Ren Zhong and backward on the occipital bone. These are confirmations. Miraculous.) He Gu (Three fen, retain three breaths, tonify) San Yin Jiao (Five fen, sedate, ten inhalations).
[Zhang Zhong Wen] Transverse presentation, dystocia: Tip of the little toe of the right foot (Moxibustion three cones, immediate birth).
[Ji Cheng] Another method: Du Yin (Same method as above, moxa seven cones, prohibit needling) He Gu (Tonify) San Yin Jiao (Sedate).
[Sang] Dystocia: San Yin Jiao
