The above Yan family follows Qian Yi's method for treating Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion Syndrome), suitable for those with weak pulse. The method involves combining Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi (White Pills of Qingzhou), Yigong San (Extraordinary Power Powder), Qianghuo Gao (Notopterygium Paste), Wenbai Wan (Warm White Pills), Gouteng Yinzi (Uncaria Decoction), etc. Administration often results in survival from near-death situations. Now following this method, Zhang Yuansu's (Haicang) Sijunzi Fa (Four Gentlemen Method) is added, placed after Yigong San; Fanhun Dan (Reviving Soul Pill) is placed after Qianghuo Wan Gao (Notopterygium Pill Paste), used in conjunction.
[Tang] Whenever vomiting and diarrhea lead to Xu Feng Man Pi (Deficient Wind Slow Spleen Syndrome), first use Duoming San (Life-Seizing Powder) and Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi powder, decocted into thin paste, mixed with honey. After controlling and expelling phlegm-saliva, administer wind-dispelling and spleen-awakening medicines.
Duoming San (Formula see below under General Treatment for Acute and Chronic Convulsions.)
For treating Deficient Wind, Baxian San (Eight Immortals Powder) is taken by those with prevailing Wind.
Bai Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) Bai Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma Praeparatum) Hua She Rou (Bungarus multicinctus Meat) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) Dongguazi (Benincasae Semen) Quanxie (Scorpio. Equal parts) Add Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix)
Cut the herbs, take one qian per dose, half zhan of water, two slices of ginger, half a jujube, decoct to two fen, take hot. Adding Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) is better.
Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) is taken by those who are drowsy and lethargic.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) Fuling (Poria) Quanxie (Scorpio. Each half liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix. Each one fen) Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma Praeparatum, four pieces)
Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, processed, two pieces) Chen Cangmi (Stored Rice Grain, two hundred grains. Another version lacks Baizhu and Banxia, adds Lianrou (Nelumbinis Semen) one qian.)
Grind into powder, take one qian per dose, half zhan of water, two slices of ginger, half a jujube, decoct to two fen, take gradually. Do not take all at once, otherwise vomiting will occur.
Niangru Fang (Breast-Milk Brewing Formula)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Huoxiang (Patchouliae Folium) Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Shenqu (Massae Medicatae Fermentatae) Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus. Equal parts) Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos, halved)
Cut the herbs, take four qian per dose, one bowl of water, ten slices of ginger, ten leaves of Zisu (Perillae Folium), three jujubes, decoct to half a bowl. The nursing mother must empty her breasts completely after eating, then take the medicine, lie supine for a moment to let the medicine enter the milk collaterals, then let the infant suck a few mouthsful. Do not overfeed. This is an excellent method. If vomiting stops for one day, urgently use wind-interrupting measures, take Baxian San (Eight Immortals Powder); after two days, take Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder). If the aforementioned medicines are ineffective, and the condition is critical and worrying, examine the Taichong (Liver 3) pulse. If not absent, moxa one point on Baihui (GV 20), located at the midpoint between anterior and posterior hairlines, and the midpoint connecting the tips of both ears. Medical texts only mention the center of the vertex whorl, which is imprecise, as some have double vertices or misaligned whorls. Quack doctors follow old texts, misleading many. After moxibustion, control phlegm-saliva using Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi powder, decocted into thin paste, mixed with refined honey, and administered with Duoming San (Life-Seizing Powder). After a while, phlegm-saliva descends. Fine-grind Lingsha (Cinnabar and Sulphur mixture), mix with rice drink, apply gradually to the mouth, observing symptom relief. If Wind is prevalent, take Baxian San (Eight Immortals Powder); if lethargic, take Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder). Regularly reduce breastfeeding, and the nursing mother takes Niangru Fang (Breast-Milk Brewing Formula). With such regulation, recovery is assured. Occasionally, those with weak constitution or short destiny cannot be saved by even divine physicians. If phlegm-saliva has moved past the diaphragm but remains in the throat like sawing, drugs cannot enter, nor can they be controlled forcibly. Use another method to lift it, combined with nasal insufflation to induce sneezing, then administer Duoming San (Life-Seizing Powder) to prevent recurrence.
Liaotan Fang (Phlegm-Lifting Formula)
Chuanwu Jian (Aconiti Radix Tip) Bai Fu Jian (Typhonii Rhizoma Tip. Each seven pieces, peel, raw use) Xieshao (Scorpio Tail, seven pieces) Shilv (Malachite Green, small amount)
Grind into powder, mix evenly, dip soft chicken feather into medicine, insert into throat, gradually withdraw, wipe frequently with cloth.
Above is Tang Shi's method for treating Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion Syndrome). First use Duoming San (Life-Seizing Powder) and Bai Wan Zi (White Pills) to control phlegm-saliva. After phlegm-saliva descends once, use Baxian San (Eight Immortals Powder) and Xingpi San (Spleen-Awakening Powder) once, and have the nursing mother use Niangru Fang (Breast-Milk Brewing Formula). If critically ill, moxa Baihui (GV 20) and use Liaotan Fang (Phlegm-Lifting Formula). However, Duoming San (Life-Seizing Powder) uses Mengshi (Fluorite), which is difficult for Qi-deficient patients to tolerate; it must be combined with Dongyuan's Yihuang San (Yellow-Supplementing Powder) for safe use.
[Chen] To treat Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion Syndrome), first administer Xiongxie San (Chuanxiong and Scorpio Powder), use manual techniques to extract cold-phlegm and cold-saliva, thereby preventing dementia; next administer Youzhu Gao (Oil-Drop Ointment); then administer Yizhen Tang (True-Nourishing Decoction) to warm and strengthen Yuan Qi (Primal Qi); occasionally administer Qianpu San (Qianhu and Magnolia Powder) to widen the upper and solidify the lower.
Xiongxie San (Chuanxiong and Scorpio Powder) Treats wind invading the brain marrow of children, fontanelle opening, tightness and swelling of skin, flesh, sinews, and vessels, blue veins rising at cranial suture gaps, pale complexion, abdominal gas sounds, passage of green-white frothy stool,
or vomiting of phlegm-saliva, impending Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion Syndrome), convulsions, and cold shanks.
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, one liang) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, two qian) Biba (Piperis Kadsurae Fructus, one liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in wine overnight, washed in water, baked dry, two qian) Xieshao (Scorpio Tail, toxicity removed, one qian)
Grind into fine powder. For a one-year-old infant, take an amount equivalent to a copper coin, mix with boiling water, take slightly hot when hungry. If phlegm fills chest and throat, eyes deviate, administer quickly. If eyes stare upward without movement, prognosis is poor. If phlegm-Qi obstruction prevents swallowing, probe finger into infant's throat dimple to manually extract phlegm-saliva until Qi flows slightly. Then use Bupi Yizhen Tang (Spleen-Nourishing True-Nourishing Decoction), or select Youzhu Gao (Oil-Drop Ointment). This formula has saved many lives over generations.
Youzhu Gao (Oil-Drop Ointment) Treats rebellious Qi vomiting, wind-phlegm convulsions.
Shitingzhi (Lapis Melichrus selected like wax from Sulfur, five qian) Huashi (Talcum, half liang) Hei Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, peel and navel removed) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in wine overnight, washed seven times in water, baked dry) Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, soaked in vinegar overnight, washed seven times in water, baked dry. Each one qian)
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, use half zhan of cold pickled vegetable juice, drop one drop of sesame oil the size of a coin, place medicine powder on the oil droplet. It will sink shortly. Discard the juice, give to infant.
Swallow three to five mouthfuls of cold pickled vegetable juice. Take on empty stomach. One hour after administration, then give breast milk or food.
Bupi Yizhen Tang (Spleen-Nourishing True-Nourishing Decoction) Treats fetal weakness with vomiting milk and clear stool, leading to Yin Epilepsy, rebellious Qi with phlegm-saliva tide, upward staring of eyes, limb jerking, or caused by Bian Zheng (Transformation Fever) Ke Wu (Hostile Influence), or shock from mistakenly taking cooling medicines.
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Huangqi (Astragali Radix) Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos) Hezi (Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, ginger-processed) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-roasted) Roukou (Myristicae Semen, flour-wrapped, baked)
Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus) Fuling (Poria) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, water-soaked) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed. Each half liang) Quanxie (Scorpio, stir-fried, add one piece per dose)
Cut herbs, take three qian per dose, one and a half zhan of water, one slice of ginger, one jujube, decoct to six fen, take slightly hot on empty stomach. After taking, massage heart and abdomen to assist medicinal power. Wait one hour, then give breast milk or food. Thirsty: add Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); remove Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos), Roukou (Myristicae Semen). Diarrhea: add Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos), Hezirou (Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus Flesh). Vomiting: add Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). Abdominal pain: add Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma). Cough: add Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus); remove Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus), Roukou (Myristicae Semen). Cold feet: add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex). Aversion to wind with spontaneous sweating: add Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). Phlegm wheezing: add Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Cortex); remove Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos), Roukou (Myristicae Semen), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus). Rebellious Qi not descending: add Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Binglang (Arecae Semen); remove Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Roukou (Myristicae Semen). Abdominal distension: add Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus).
Qianpu San (Qianhu and Magnolia Powder) Treats Qi knotting in heart and abdomen, or retching/vomiting/diarrhea, abdominal distension/pain, palpitations.
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma) Huoxiang (Patchouliae Folium) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex. Equal parts)
Cut herbs, take three qian per dose, one zhan of water, decoct to seven fen, take slightly hot on empty stomach.
If children mistakenly take cooling medicines, or use cloth dipped in water to wipe mouth, damaging Spleen and Stomach, resulting in diarrhea, abdominal distension, or abdominal rumbling. Children with pale complexion, lacking joy/smiles, looking down instead of up. Children with high/tight fontanelle, blue veins at head sutures, passing green stool. Fat children with stool like clear mucus or frozen juice. Children blinking frequently, stool with green-white foam, sometimes dry/hard. Among these five symptoms, sudden vomiting indicates inevitable Yin Epilepsy, commonly known as Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion Syndrome). Children with hot head, blue-white eyes, and cold feet;
or abdominal distension with cold feet; or diarrhea with cold feet; or vomiting with cold feet; or thirst with cold feet. (Hot head, red eyes, phlegm blocking nose/throat/windpipe are all Rootless Fire rebelling.) Among these five symptoms, sudden vomiting with convulsions is named Man Pi Feng (Slow Spleen Wind). Quickly administer Bupi Yizhen Tang (Spleen-Nourishing True-Nourishing Decoction), one dose three qian heavy, add one Scorpio. If convulsions due to fright, administer Qianpu San (Qianhu and Magnolia Powder), one dose three qian heavy, add half qian each of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), decoct together.
Above is Chen Wenzhong's method for treating Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion Syndrome). Its treatment sequence forms a unique school, thus recorded separately for reference. His medical cases regarding Xiongxie San (Chuanxiong and Scorpio Powder) and Youzhu Gao (Oil-Drop Ointment) repeatedly achieved efficacy.

[Liu/Wu - Note: Text says [Yuan], likely Li Dongyuan] Jing Er Xie (Child's Fright Diarrhea) is green. First calm with Zhusha (Cinnabaris) etc., do not use cold-cooling medicines. Strictly forbid Liang Jing Wan (Cooling Fright Pills). Since Wood Wind prevails, it must overcome Earth Spleen. First solidify Earth, then drain Wood. Symptoms of prevailing Wood Wind: Right Guan pulse is surging and large, palm heat, abdominal wall heat. Now established a formula, Huangqi Yihuang San (Astragalus Yellow-Supplementing Powder) is primary. Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) in equal parts. These three are warm, tonify Spleen Earth, benefit Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), sweet drains Fire. Neijing states: Heat rampant within, drain with sweet, astringe with sour. Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is sour-cold. Cold drains Fire, sour drains Liver Wood and greatly tonifies Lung Metal. Tonified Metal and Earth positions become prosperous, Fire becomes deficient. How can Wood Wind overcome Earth? Then drain prevailing Wood Wind. Spleen deficiency is due to Fire Evil occupying Earth position. Thus, coming from later is Deficient Evil. Fire prosperity strengthens Wood, Wood prosperity overcomes Earth. Must tonify Earth source with sweet-warm in Heart Meridian, drain Fire with sweet-cold in Spleen Earth, tonify Metal with sour-cool. Thus Metal prospers in Spleen Earth, Fire declines, Wood Wind naturally becomes deficient.
