柏子仁(三分)、黄连(一钱五分)用以清泄火热;如果大便秘结干燥,心下痞塞,加用黄连、桃仁,少量加入大黄、当归身;

Baizi Ren (3 fen), Huanglian (1.5 qian) are used to clear and drain fire; if there is constipation with dry stool and epigastric fullness, add Huanglian, Taoren, and a small amount of Dahuang, Dangguishen;
if the epigastric fullness is accompanied by a sense of oppression, add Baishao, Huanglian; if the epigastric fullness is accompanied by abdominal distension, add Wuweizi, Baishao, Suosharen; if the weather is cold,
add Ganjiang or Rougui in small amounts; if the epigastric fullness is due to middle jiao cold, add Fuzi, Huanglian; if the epigastric fullness is accompanied by vomiting and rebellious qi, add Huanglian, Shengjiang, JuPi;
in winter, do not add Huanglian, but add Dingxiang, Huoxiangye in small amounts; if there is dry mouth and throat, add Wuweizi, Gegen; if there is tightness or pain under the ribs,
add Chaihu, Gancao; if there is chest fullness and depression, add Juhong, Qingpi, and a small amount of Muxiang; if headache is accompanied by phlegm, feeling heavy and lethargic,
this is Taiyin Phlegm-Jue Headache, add Banxia (0.5 qian), Shengjiang (2-3 fen); if there are stabbing pains in the abdomen or throughout the body, it is due to blood stasis and insufficiency, add Dangguishen;
if there is hiccups, increase Wuweizi and decrease Yizhiren; if the pulse is surging and large with heat symptoms, add small amounts of Huanglian, Huangqin, Shengdihuang, Gancao;
if the pulse is slow and heavy, and the body is lethargic and weak, it is due to excess dampness, add Cangzhu, Zexie, Renshen, BaiFuling, Wuweizi; if the pulse is choppy and there is a sensation of qi stagnation, add Dangguishen, Tianmendong, Muxiang, Qingpi, Chenpi; if there is cold pathogen, add Guizhi, Huangqi [Note: Original text has "Huang ", inferred as Huangqi based on context of cold];
if food cannot be swallowed, it is due to cold in the chest and stomach, or qi stagnation, add Qingpi, Chenpi, Muxiang. These three herbs constitute a fixed method. In winter, add Yizhiren, Caodoukouren, Suosharen;
in summer, use less, and add Huanglian; in autumn, when qi is stagnant and does not descend, add Binglang, Caodoukouren, Suosharen, or a small amount of Baidoukouren;
if in the spring months food cannot be swallowed, also use small amounts of Qingpi and large amounts of Chenpi, plus wind-dispelling herbs to dispel cold covering the upper part; if early spring is still cold,
add more acrid-hot herbs to supplement the insufficiency of spring qi, serving as assistants to the wind-dispelling herbs, such as Yizhiren, Caodoukouren. If the pulse is wiry, indicating wind-heat syndrome,
use wind-dispelling herbs to unblock it. If there is chest obstruction or qi closure with confusion, it is due to lung qi stagnation, appropriate to break qi stagnation using Qingpi, Chenpi, with small amounts of
Binglang, Muxiang; in winter, add Wuzhuyu, Renshen. If there is chest obstruction and blockage without relief, it is caused by external cold restraining the exhalation of qi.
The cunkou pulse must be wiry or slightly tight, indicating cold in the chest; if accompanied by a white slippery coating on the tongue, this clearly indicates heat in the dantian and cold in the chest. Those with heat in the dantian must have cold at the coccyx, cold sweat in the anterior yin region, and cold testicles; this means the pathogenic qi attacks the root while the healthy qi moves into the meridians. Upon exposure to cold, yin-yin pain will occur; this distinguishes latent fire in the dantian; add Huangbai, Shengdihuang, and do not mistakenly treat it as a cold syndrome.
If abdominal pain occurs during the cold weather of autumn and winter, add Banxia, or Yizhiren, or Caodoukouren. If there is fever or the skin surface feels hot to touch, this is an exterior syndrome; only take Buzhong Yiqi Tang for one or two doses, and slight sweating will lead to cooling. If the legs and knees are flaccid, walking is weak, or painful, it is due to latent damp-heat in the liver and kidneys; add small amounts of Huangbai, taken on an empty stomach. If not cured, increase Huangbai and add Hanfangji 0.5 qian, then strength in the legs and knees will return.
If there is excessive salivation or foamy saliva, it is cold retention above the stomach opening; add Yizhiren. If there is shortness of breath and insufficient respiration, after taking the main medicine for two or three doses, if breathing remains short, it is because cold in the diaphragm and exterior is restraining the qi; one should guide the yang qi upward, adding Qianghuo, Duhuo, Bencao in minimal amounts, Shengma in large amounts, Chaihu next, and Huangqi doubled.
Siwu Tang nourishes Ying and Wei, and tonifies Qi and Blood.
Shudihuang (tonifies blood; if there is pain below the umbilicus, only this can remove it, as it enters the Kidney meridian) Chuanxiong (treats wind draining Liver Wood; if there is headache due to blood deficiency, only this can remove it, as it enters the Kidney and Liver meridians) Shaoyao (harmonizes blood) Danggui (if there is stabbing pain due to blood, only this can remove it, as it enters the Kidney meridian)
Crush into coarse powder, decoct in water. Additionally, in spring use Fangfeng Siwu, adding Fangfeng and doubling Chuanxiong; in summer use Huangqin Siwu, adding Huangqin and Shaoyao;
in autumn use Mendong Siwu, adding Tianmendong and doubling Dihuang; in winter use Guizhi Siwu, adding Guizhi and doubling Danggui. If there is abdominal pain due to blood deficiency, with slight sweating and aversion to wind, add Baizhu and Guizhi to Siwu Tang, called Abdominal Pain Liuhe Tang; if there is wind vertigo, add Qinjiao, Qianghuo, called Wind Liuhe Tang; if there is fever with irritability and inability to sleep, add Huanglian, Zhizi, called Heat Liuhe Tang; if dampness causes heaviness and weakness, cool body with slight sweating, add Baizhu, Fuling, called Dampness Liuhe Tang; if Qi is deficient, weakness upon rising, sudden collapse, add Houpo, Chenpi, called Qi Liuhe Tang; if there is deficiency-cold, faint pulse, spontaneous sweating, difficulty breathing, clear urine and stool, add Ganjiang, Fuzi, called Cold Liuhe Tang; if there is body heat, rapid pulse, dizziness and stiff neck, add Chaihu, Huangqin; if wind is generated by heat, add Chuanxiong, Chaihu, Fangfeng. If eyes suddenly become red with clouding and unbearable pain, use Siwu Longdan Tang (formula see Eye Section). If there are sores, add Jingjie, decocted in wine for regular use. If there is deficiency-irritability and insomnia, add Zhuye, Renshen; if there is deficiency-heat disease, combine Siwu Tang with Sushu Yin, named Buxin Tang for treatment; if there is irritability and extreme thirst, add Zhimu, Shigao; if yin deficiency leads to heat clashing with blood, causing dry mouth and throat with drinking, add Gualou, Maidong; if various pains are accompanied by dampness, combine Siwu Tang with Baizhu equally, add Tianma, Fuling, Shanjiajia, decocted in wine; if limbs are swollen and painful with immobility, use Siwu Cangzhu Half-Decoction; if there is vomiting, add Baizhu, Renshen, Shengjiang; if fluid retention in the heart area with mild nausea, add Zhuling, Fuling, Fangji; if treating dryness accumulation, combine Siwu Tang with Tiaowei Chengqi Tang equally to form Yuzhu San; if internal organs are blocked and constipated, add Dahuang, Taoren; if elderly people have wind-type constipation, add Qingpi in equal parts for decoction; if moistening dryness, use Siwu Lizhong Half-Decoction; if there is slippery diarrhea, add Guigui, Fuzi; if there is bloody dysentery, add Jiaoai decoction; if there is abdominal distension, add Houpo, Zhishi; if there is consumptive disease with weak Qi, cough and wheezing, use Houpo Liuhe Tang: Siwu Tang 4 liang, Houpo processed with ginger 1 liang, Zhishi bran-fried 0.5 liang; if Qi and Blood rush up to the heart and abdomen with rib-side fullness, use Zhiqi Liuhe Tang: Siwu Tang 4 liang, add Muxiang, Binglang each 1 liang; if there is alternating chills and fever, add Ganjiang charred, Mudanpi, Baishao, Chaihu; if there is deficiency-fever resembling Typhoid, add Renshen, Chaihu. Siwu Tang can be combined equally with Guizhi, Mahuang, Baihu, Chaihu, Lizhong, Sini, Zhuyu, Chengqi, Liangge etc., which is the general principle of Yilao's medication. Siwu Tang modifications for women's miscellaneous diseases include 26 formulas, see Women's Section; Siwu Tang modifications for pregnancy typhoid include 15 formulas named Liuhe Tang, see Typhoid Section. Siwu Tang modifications for regulating menstruation include 7 formulas, see Menstruation Section.

Spleen and Stomach insufficiency all lead to blood disease; this is because Yang Qi is insufficient and Yin Qi is excessive, thus the nine orifices are blocked. All Yang Qi roots in Yin Blood; when Yin Blood is affected by Fire Pathogen, Yin becomes excessive, rises to attack Yang regions, blocking the Yang pathway, resulting in no ascending and generating Qi. Yang Qi travels through the orifices, while Yin Qi adheres to form. Like Yin adhering to earth and Yang rising to heaven, they remain in their proper places. The formulas established here contain Acrid-Sweet-Warm herbs, but not used alone. There are also Sweet-Bitter-Great-Cold agents, also not used alone. Using Fire Wine as guides, bitter-sweet-cold herbs reach the top and then enter below the Kidney and Liver. This is the way of ascending, descending, floating, and sinking, from even to odd, from odd to even. Use wind herbs to drain Yin Fire, and ascend Yang Qi to nourish Liver and Gallbladder functions, allowing Yang Qi to generate and emerge from the Yin region. Finally, use Acrid-Sweet-Warm herbs to deliver ascending drugs, causing massive dispersion in the Yang region to reach the nine orifices.
For treating Yin unable to overcome Yang, with rapid pulse of 6-7 beats per breath, or even mania, refer to Huanglian Jiedu Tang, Sanhuang Wan, Zixue in the Cold-Heat section for formulas; severe cases use Chengqi Tang.
[Zhang Zhongjing] said: If Yang fails first, the complexion is green; if Yin fails first, the complexion is red.
[Hai Zang]: Pulse failure means Yin enters the earth. The pulse is like channels in the earth, connecting all meridians and irrigating the whole body. Yang Qi urges and moves them; if Yang does not move, the pulse does not move. Thus Yin separates and loses control, causing incontinence of urine and feces. Internal warming and external moxibustion should be performed simultaneously without delay. For warming, use Sini Tang category. For moxibustion, the point 1.5 cun below the umbilicus, Qihai, is used.

[Yuan Huan]: Also treats wiry pulse with spontaneous sweating, heat in four limbs, or dry skin and hair loss, suitable for Huangqi Jianzhong Tang.
[Zhang Zhongjing]: For deficiency-consumption with interior tension, palpitations, epistaxis, abdominal pain, nocturnal seminal emission, limb soreness, five-palm heat, dry throat and mouth, Xiaojianzhong Tang is the primary treatment. (Formula see Typhoid Section)

I formulated this prescription combining Jianzhong Tang and Siwu Tang; after major illnesses like typhoid, malaria, or heatstroke, for those with deficiency-consumption and Qi exhaustion, this formula regulates effectively, neither hot nor cold, gentle and tonifying.
[Hai Zang]: Dabu Shiquan San treats various deficiencies in men and women, Five Labors and Seven Injuries, anorexia, chronic deficiency, tidal fevers, Qi attacking bones and spine, spasms and pain, nocturnal emissions, sallow complexion, weak legs and knees, wheezing and fullness, weak Spleen and Kidney Qi, five-center heat and irritability.

Commentary: This is Dai Ren's empirical formula. It effectively treats lower deficiency and upper excess, suppresses fire and raises water, moistens dryness, pushes out the old and generates the new, nourishes Yin replacing Yang, disperses stagnation and breaks knots, invigorates blood and unblocks meridians. It also treats Lung痿 wheezing, chest and diaphragm discomfort, Spleen dampness jaundice, undigested food, and all miscellaneous diseases, too numerous to list. Dai Ren advised patients to take it at night to promote appetite, allowing other medicines to be taken freely. It harmonizes Qi and Blood in women, and treats pediatric convulsions, rickets, and accumulated heat, dosed according to severity. (Original text includes Xiangfu 2 liang)
Quanzhen Wan treats Spleen organ accumulated heat, cleans intestinal filth, moistens dryness and relieves constipation, wind-toxin attacking meridians, hand and foot edema, or numbness and paralysis, difficult phlegm and saliva, thick nasal discharge and sputum, chest and diaphragm fullness, umbilical and abdominal distension, reduced diet, fatigue and weakness. He Jian's formulation treats all heat syndromes, its efficacy cannot be fully described. If there is long-term heat stagnation, regardless of thin, old, or weak patients, and all conditions suitable for purgation, start with 10 pills as a limit. Regular use removes intestinal filth and accumulation, does not harm Harmonious Qi, pushes out the old and generates the new, promotes smooth bowel movement, without drug-induced irritation, fatigue, or depletion, satisfying the patient. If heat is severe requiring urgent purgation, take 40-50 pills; if ineffective, repeat, adjusting dosage as needed. Regular use of 20-30 pills does not disturb internal organs, beneficial without harm. If women have blood disease with foul discharge, add Rougui 0.5 liang. For mild illness, regular use; for severe cases, induce purgation, thereby opening blockages and expelling foul matter naturally. For elderly, weak, and deficient persons with Spleen-Stomach meridian deficiency, wind-heat stagnation, dark complexion, dry teeth, emaciation, scorched yellow skin, or excessive sweet-hot intake leading to Sanxiao diseases: if heat is severe externally causing limb restlessness, internally causing mental agitation, depression and opening difficulties, generating various symptoms, all should take this. Contraindicated for those with slippery bowels, interior cold with slow pulse, menstrual disorders, postpartum bleeding, and pregnant women.
Zhouche Shenwan Drains water and dampness.
Gansui (1 liang, vinegar-fried) Dahuang (2 liang) Yuanhua (vinegar-fried, 1 liang) Hei Qianniu (head powder, 4 liang) Qingfen (1 qian) Daji (1 liang, vinegar-fried) Qingpi, Chenpi, Muxiang, Binglang (each 0.5 liang)
Add Wuyi 0.5 liang to Qu Gu, grind into powder, make water pills. Take on an empty stomach.
He Jian, following Zhang Zhongjing's Shizao Tang example, formulated this prescription to treat all water-dampness diseases. Dai Ren said: Shizao Tang is the superior herb for draining water, what is called "warm herbs for downward action". For abdominal fullness, wheezing, stranguria, ascites, retained fluid and masses, Qi and Blood congestion without free flow, wind-heat dryness stagnation, limb numbness, wandering pain, chronic malaria and dysentery, women's menstrual disorders and leukorrhea, all can be treated according to this method, diseases removed like sweeping. Hence Jia Tongzhi called it a miraculous divine medicine. As determined by He Jian, start with 5 pills, three times a day. Increase until rapid purgation is achieved, then maintain regular use until the disease is gone. If healthy people take it regularly after recovery to preserve health, unblock Qi and Blood, and aid digestion. If severe blooming and oppression exist, taking more may cause annoyance and fullness, worsening pain; start with 2 pills, increase by 2 pills each time until rapid purgation, adjusting as needed. For children, make pills size of sesame seeds, adjust dosage according to strength; 3-4 year olds take 3-5 pills, reducing according to previous methods. When Dai Ren arrived, it changed to Shenxiong Wan, secret and not transmitted. However, he always let...
