Grind the herbs into fine powder, wrap them in lotus leaves with steamed rice to make pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills each time, administered before meals with warm water. (Another prescription adds one qian of Huoxiang [Agastache Herba].)
Treats chronic dysentery leading to deficiency and slipping of the Zang-Fu organs, where accumulation cannot be cleared; use Cangzhu Tang (Atractylodis Rhizoma Decoction) to administer Taohua Wan (Peach Blossom Pill).
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, two liang) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, one liang)
Chop the herbs, add one bowl of water, decoct until reduced to one large cup, then add Taohua Wan or Chishizhi Wan (Red Kaolin Pill). If urination becomes smooth, the patient will recover. (Taohua Wan is made from the Taohua Tang [Peach Blossom Decoction] found in the "Dysentery" section, consisting of Chishizhi [Kaolinitum] and Ganjiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma].)
[From *Yan*] A person suffered from cold and clearness of the Large Intestine, with involuntary emission of urine and essence. Various heat-promoting medicines totaling one dou and two sheng were taken without effect. Later, he was taught to take Chishizhi [Kaolinitum] and Ganjiang [Zingiberis Rhizoma], each one liang, and Hujiao [Piperis Fructus], half a qian, ground together into powder, formed into pills with vinegar paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Taken on an empty stomach and before meals with millet drink, 50-70 pills per dose. After four doses, he was cured.
[From *Ben*] Treats disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach, incessant diarrhea unresponsive to various medicines; use Hezi Wan (Chebulae Fructus Pill).
Hezi Pi (Pericarpium Chebulae), Chuannjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Longgu (Os Draconis), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Chishizhi (Kaolinitum), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (all in equal parts)
Grind into fine powder, form into pills with paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 40 pills each time, administered with millet drink.
Formula: Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang (Red Kaolin and Hematite Decoction)
Treats Large Intestine diarrhea.
Chishizhi (Prepared Red Kaolinitum), Yuyuliang (Hematitum) (each four qian, prepared)
Crush the herbs. Take five qian each time, add one and a half cups of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, remove dregs, and take warm.
[From *Sun*] Treats Qi deficiency with cold injury, sudden onset of watery diarrhea, twenty to thirty times a day, incessant abdominal pain. During summer travel, use Beijiji Zhaozhen Dan (Emergency Morning-True Elixir). Use Liuhuang [Sulfur], one and a half liang, ground extremely fine; Kubaijian (Alumen Exsiccatum), five qian, ground evenly together. Soak steamed dough cake in water, remove excess water, form into pills sized like paulownia seeds, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabaris). Take 15 pills each time, administered with warm millet salt water. (The above methods stop cold-type diarrhea.) Treats incessant sudden watery diarrhea.
Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) (three pieces, wrapped in wet flour, roasted in fire until flour is charred, remove flour. Danxi said: Roudoukou belongs to Metal and Earth, effectively warming the middle and tonifying the Spleen. Ri Hua Zi called it qi-descending, because when the Spleen and Stomach are tonified and transport well, qi naturally descends. It is not like Xiangfu [Cyperi Rhizoma] or Chenpi [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium] which dissipate qi.)
Grind the Roudoukou into fine powder, prepare as a single dose, mix with aged millet drink. Take before meals; miraculous effect.
[From *Jie*] Sudden watery diarrhea, sweating over the whole body, coldness throughout the body, pulse deep and weak, shortness of breath unable to speak, severe cases accompanied by vomiting. This is called a "tight disease," treat with Jiangshui San (Fermented Rice Water Powder).
Jiangshui San
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, two liang), Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, two qian and half), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (prepared, each five qian)
Grind into fine powder. Take three to five qian each time, add two cups of water, decoct until reduced to one cup, take hot. Severe cases: take three to four doses. If the Taiyang channel is injured and transmits to the Taiyin channel, resulting in loose stools, inability of the Large Intestine to consolidate, sudden diarrhea with hard matter inside, wanting to rise but defecating again, wanting to finish but not finishing, with abundant clear urine, this is cold; treat with warmth. In spring and summer, use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction); in autumn and winter, use Baizhu Tang (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Decoction). Qianfu said: Loose stool refers to feces like water containing a small amount of hardened stool.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each half liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeficta) (roasted, two qian)

Cut into coarse powder, administer as above. For severe cases, remove Ganjiang and add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) three qian, because pungent substances can disperse.
[From *Luo*] Quzhu Wan (Saccharomyces and Atractylodes Pill)
Treats sudden summer-heat diarrhea, strengthens Spleen and Stomach, and treats chest and diaphragm fullness due to food injury.
Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (soaked in rice washing water overnight. Equal parts)

He disliked eating, was lazy to speak, and felt physically fatigued. I was summoned to examine him; his pulse was deep, slow, and wiry. The Canzheng, being old and weak, had a pre-existing deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach. Added to this were the continuous rain and irregular diet/labor, further weakening the Middle Qi. *Nan Jing* states: "Irregular diet and fatigue injure the Spleen." Where there is insufficiency, excess follows. The Fire of the year was insufficient, so Cold prevailed greatly, and the people suffered from loose stools. Now, with insufficient righteous Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, Kidney Water must borrow Wood's force to insult Earth, attacking what it cannot overcome and overcoming what it should. This disease requires sweet and pungent, great-hot medicines to drain water and tonify Earth. Although it is summer, there is a warning against using heat in heat. However, it is also said: "In cases of false symptoms, reverse the treatment," which is a temporary measure to address urgency. *Nei Jing* states: "When Cold invades internally, treat with pungent and hot." Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) are pungent, sweet, and great-hot, serving as Sovereign herbs to drain Cold Water. For Spleen insufficiency, tonify with sweet: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) are bitter-sweet-warm to tonify Spleen Earth. For Stomach cold causing loss of appetite, use Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Caodoukou (Cardamomi Semens) pungent-warm to treat external cold invading the Stomach. Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) is pungent-warm to thicken the intestines and stomach. Baifuling (Poria) and Gancao assist Ginger and Aconite to guide out Cold-Dampness. Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is sour and slightly cold to tonify Metal and drain Wood, preventing heat from injuring Lung Qi, serving as Assistant herbs. After a few doses, he recovered.
Fuzi Wenzhong Tang (Aconite Warming Middle Decoction)
Treats Cold Injury in the Middle Jiao, abdominal pain with spontaneous diarrhea, undigested food, Spleen and Stomach weakness, dislike of eating, laziness to speak, fatigue, and desire to lie down.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (prepared, skin and umbilicus removed), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (prepared. Each seven qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeficta), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baifuling (Poria) (skin removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each five qian)
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (processed with ginger), Caodoukou (Cardamomi Semens) (wrapped in flour, roasted, skin removed), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each three qian)
Chop the herbs. Take five qian or one liang each time, add two and a half cups of water, five slices of ginger, decoct until reduced to one cup, take warm before meals.
[From *Jian*] Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) treats diarrhea; add Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) and Fuling (Poria) each one liang, named Buzhong Tang (Tonify the Middle Decoction). If loose diarrhea persists, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) one liang to Buzhong Tang. For those who dislike eating and have undigested food/water, add Sharen (Amomi Fructus) one liang, totaling eight ingredients. (Lizhong Tang formula see *Shanghan*).
[From *Ben*] Treats Wind-Damp in Spleen and Stomach, slipping diarrhea of Zang-Fu organs; use Ju Wan (Angelicae Dahuricae Pill).
Xiong (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (equal parts, prepared)
Grind into fine powder, form into pills with wheat paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 30-50 pills each time, administered with millet drink. Zuo Shi narrated that when King Chu besieged Xiao, and Xiao was about to fall, Wushe told Shenshuzhan: "Do you have Qu? Do you have Shanju?" Ju refers to Xiong (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix). The intent was to tell him to escape into water to avoid disaster. Thus, we know Xiong can drain Dampness; it should be added with Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma/Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Fu (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to control it. If diarrhea is due to Spleen Dampness, it will certainly be effective. It also treats Sundry Diarrhea (Sunxie).
[From *Wu*] Guixiang Wan (Cinnamon and Agarwood Pill)
Treats deficiency of Zang-Fu organs combated by Wind-Cold, cold slippery diarrhea uncontrollable, critical conditions in elderly and deficient persons; repeatedly effective.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (prepared, skin and umbilicus removed), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) (prepared), Baifuling (Poria) (each one liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (prepared), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (prepared. Each half liang), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (one fen)
Grind into powder, form into pills with paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills with millet soup, on an empty stomach.
[From *Sun*] Treats unlimited watery diarrhea. Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) powder, mixed with porridge drink, one qian per dose; immediate effect.
Diarrhea with body heat, difficult urination, and thirst: use Yiyuan San (Beneficial Origin Powder) and Wuling San (Five Ling Powder). If Fire is excessive, use Siling San (Four Ling Powder) plus Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). (Formulas see Heat-Damp section.) Diarrhea with fatigue and difficulty, rapid pulse, or deficiency-heat: use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum), Ling (Poria), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla). (Formulas see Tonify Spleen and Move Dampness section.) Diarrhea with slippery and firm pulse indicates Excess-Heat; use Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction). (Formula see Excess section.)
[From *Dan*] Yulong Wan (Jade Dragon Pill)
Treats all latent summer-heat diarrhea; miraculous effect. (Formula see *Shanghan* Summer-Heat section.)
[From *Zhong*] Dysentery unceasing; the physician gave Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), but the dysentery worsened. Lizhong Tang regulates the Middle Jiao; this dysentery is in the Lower Jiao, treated primarily with Chishizhi Yuyuliang Tang (Red Kaolin and Hematite Decoction). If dysentery persists after this, promote urination. Dysentery with abdominal fullness and body pain: first warm the interior, then attack the exterior. Warm interior with Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction); attack exterior with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Large Intestine and Small Intestine cause diarrhea. (Full text see Diagnosis.) One Yang pathogenesis causes shortness of breath, frequent coughing, and frequent diarrhea. (Full text see Disease Transmission.)
According to the Theory of Five Movements and Six Qi, there are six types of diarrhea:
1. Earth assists Spleen Dampness causing diarrhea. Classic says: When Earth is excessive, rain and dampness prevail, causing loose stools and borborygmus. Also: When Water is insufficient, dampness flows downward, people suffer from heavy body and damp diarrhea. Also: When Fire is insufficient, Cold prevails greatly, Earth retaliates causing loose stools, abdominal pain, borborygmus, and projectile diarrhea. Also: When Earth stagnation erupts, people suffer from fluid retention and projectile diarrhea. Also: When Dampness dominates, it causes damp diarrhea; treat with bitter-warm.
2. Wind-Wood attacks Spleen deficiency causing diarrhea. Classic says: When Jueyin governs, Wind prevails excessively, people suffer from cold diarrhea and loose stools. Also: Wind injury in Spring, pathogen lingers, causing hole-like diarrhea; treat with pungent-cool.
3. Heat Diarrhea. Classic says: Shaoyang governs sudden projectile diarrhea. Also: Shao Yin victory causes abdominal fullness and loose stools. Also: Fire stagnation erupts, people suffer from projectile diarrhea; treat with cold agents.
4. Cold Diarrhea: Classic says: When Water is excessive, Cold prevails, causing borborygmus and loose stools. Also: Taiyang arrival causes flow and discharge prohibition. Also: Taiyang victory, Cold enters Lower Jiao, transmitting to damp diarrhea; treat with hot agents.
5. Heat-Middle and Cold-Middle Diarrhea. Classic says: Taiyang governs administration, third Qi, Cold Qi moves, people suffer from Cold, yet reverse Heat-Middle projectile diarrhea; this is external Cold and internal Heat diarrhea. Also: Late Summer prone to hole-like diarrhea, Cold-Middle is external Heat and internal Cold diarrhea; treat with simultaneous Cold and Heat.
6. Dryness Diarrhea. Classic says: When Wood is insufficient, Dryness prevails greatly, people suffer from borborygmus and loose stools. Also: Yangming governs, Dryness prevails excessively, people suffer from abdominal borborygmus, projectile diarrhea and loose stools. Also: Yangming victory, Clearness erupts internally causing loose stools. Also: Yangming recurrence, abdominal distension and diarrhea; treat with warm agents.
[From *Zihehe*] I once heard of Mr. Yang from Shandong treating a Prefect's incessant hole-like diarrhea. Mr. Yang did not initially address the patient but talked with others about the movements of sun, moon, stars, and changes in wind, thunder, clouds, and rain from Chen hour to Wei hour. The patient listened and forgot to go to the toilet. Mr. Yang often said: To treat people with incessant hole-like diarrhea, first ask what they love. If they like chess, play chess with them; if they like music, provide flutes and pipes without stopping.
Acupuncture and Moxibustion
For diarrhea, exclusively select the Large Intestine channel. Classic says: Large Intestine disease involves piercing pain and gurgling in the intestines. Cold entering in winter causes diarrhea, pain at the navel; select Shanglianshu (ST37).
[From *Luo*] Treats water infiltrating the Stomach causing overflow drinking and slippery diarrhea, thirst able to drink, water passes then diarrhea returns, diarrhea with extreme thirst. This is a symptom without medicine; moxa Dazhui (GV14).
[From *Mai*] All dysenteries can be treated by moxibustion on Dadu (SP4) five moxa cones, Shangqiu (SP5) and Yinlingquan (SP9) three moxa cones each.
[From *Jia Yi*] Loose diarrhea with undigested food, irregular chills and fever; Yinlingquan (SP9) governs.
[From *Yu Ji*] Treats chronic diarrhea (internally Tian Shu ST25, same as *Cuoyao* and *Zha Ying*). Tian Shu (ST25) (two and a half cun, moxa. *Zha Ying*: five fen, retain ten breaths, moxa hundred cones.)
[From *Ji*] Spontaneous dysentery unceasing: Tianji (CV11), Zhongji (CV3).
[From *Shi Zong*] Another method: Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36), Yinlingquan (SP9). If ineffective, select lower points: Zhongwan (CV12), Guanyuan (CV4), Tian Shu (ST25), Shenque (CV8).
[From *Dong Feng*] Uncontrollable diarrhea and dysentery, severe lower abdominal cramping: Dantian (CV4) (moxa hundred cones, repeat three times). Diarrhea/dysentery with poor appetite: Changgu (CV4 alternative name?) (fifty cones, repeat three times, located beside hypochondrium and navel, five cun apart, also named Xunyuan point.)
[From *Yan*] Shi Liuhuang (Mineral Sulfur). Nowadays used to treat deficiency-cold of the Lower Yuan, impending exhaustion of Original Qi, chronic cold diarrhea, weak Stomach and Spleen, life hanging by a thread. Taking it is invariably effective. When the disease is addressed, stop; do not consume the entire dose. People only know using it brings fortune, not that it brings disaster. This substance has both benefits and harms. If completely discarded and unused, could it be omitted in emergencies?
