[Li Dongyuan] Teeth are the external manifestation of the Kidney (Shen). The mouth is the orifice of the Spleen (Pi). Many meridians converge in the mouth. The teeth are traversed by the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The upper teeth belong to Kun Earth (Spleen and Stomach) and are connected by the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian; they remain still. The lower teeth chew food, moving constantly, and are connected by the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. The Hand-Yangming Meridian dislikes cold drinks and prefers heat, while the Foot-Yangming Meridian prefers cold and dislikes heat; thus, their pathologies differ. As an external sign of the Kidney, teeth also prefer cold. Cold causes firmness and pain; excessive heat causes tooth mobility and gingival recession, leading to persistent pain. Therefore, treatments vary. Some have pain due to aversion to heat, some due to aversion to cold, some due to both, some due to aversion to cold but drinking more hot liquids, some due to aversion to heat but drinking more cold liquids, some due to tooth mobility, some due to gingival recession, some due to caries with bleeding, some due to swelling, some due to wind pathogens in the Spleen and Stomach triggered by wind exposure, some due to虫牙 (tooth decay) causing discoloration and loss, some due to Stomach Qi deficiency failing to resist cold exposure, and some accompanied by foul odor. Since pains differ, can one medicine treat all?
