[Qian Yi] When the Liver has Wind pathogen, the eyes blink frequently without convulsions; when the Liver has Heat pathogen, there is fixed staring of the eyes without convulsions; if Heart Heat is involved, convulsions occur. To treat the Liver, use Xieqing Wan (Drain the Green Pill). To treat the Heart, use Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder). Any disease, whether new or chronic, can draw out Liver Wind, causing the Wind to move upward to the head and eyes. The eyes belong to the Liver. When Wind enters the eyes, they shake up, down, left, and right as if blown by the wind. The child cannot bear this, hence the frequent blinking. If Heat enters the eyes, it pulls on the sinews and vessels, causing the eyes to be tightly bound [text missing in original, inferred as closed/tight], unable to turn the gaze, hence fixed staring. If convulsions occur due to Heart Heat, it is because both the Mother (Heart) and Child (Liver) organs have Excess Heat, and Wind and Fire struggle against each other. To treat the Liver, use Xieqing Wan. To treat the Heart, use Daochi San.
[Qian Yi] When Liver Wind is severe, the body arches backward like a bow (opisthotonos), becoming stiff and rigid without convulsions. If the Heart does not receive Heat, one should tonify the Kidney and treat the Liver. To tonify the Kidney, use Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). To treat the Liver, use Xieqing Wan.
Zhu Danxi stated: Epilepsy (Xian) is deficient compared to Convulsive Disorders (Feng), so treatment should include tonification. It is mostly Qi deficiency with Fire and Phlegm. Use Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) for treatment, avoiding drugs that specifically target Wind. This discussion truly expounded upon points not previously revealed by earlier masters. Although Tang Shi claimed that ten cases of Convulsive Disorder result in no survivors, this was likely because this method had never been applied to patients.
[Ming Dynasty Physician] For Opisthotonos: Moxibustion at three Zhu (units of moxa cone size) above the nasal root, entering the hairline by three cun. Moxibustion at three Zhu between the lower segment of the Dazhui (GV14) vertebra.
[Tang Shi] If the body is soft and the patient wakes up intermittently, it is Epilepsy (Xian). If the body is stiff and arched backward like a bow, and the patient does not wake up intermittently, it is Convulsive Disorder (Jing Feng - text missing in original). The prognosis for Convulsive Disorder is extremely poor, with no survivors out of ten cases.
[Tang Shi] Head shaking caused by Liver Wind is not recorded in various formularies. The son of Vice-Administrator Zheng suffered from head shaking for seven years and hematochezia for three years. He had already taken over a hundred prescriptions. Previous treatments for head shaking consisted merely of Wind-expelling drugs and hemostatics; some treated it as Dysentery, others as Intestinal Wind, but all medicines were ineffective. After examining his condition and knowing the details, I initially did not understand its root and branch. Upon reflection, I determined that Liver Blood was abundant, and external Wind-Heat invaded it. The Liver belongs to Wood. When excessive, it overacts on Spleen Earth. The Spleen and Lung are in a mother-child relationship and are both subdued by the Liver, causing blood to seep into the large intestine, leading to persistent hematochezia. Therefore, I prescribed a formula that only damaged the Liver, expelled Wind, and benefited the Spleen. This was initially just my personal insight, but after taking only a few doses, he recovered. More than ten days later, the bleeding stopped, and white pus was discharged, after which he became stable.
Prescription: Xi Jiao Xiao (Rhinoceros Horn Shavings), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 1 fen); Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root) (0.5 liang); She Tui Pi (Ophichus Skin) (1 qian, roasted until red); Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) (5 liang); Gou Teng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis) (1 qian); Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) (devoid of joints, 1 qian); Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (honey-fried, 0.5 liang); Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix); Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind the above into powder, form pills with jujube paste, and take with Bo He Tang (Mint Decoction) after meals. Effect was seen after only two doses; head shaking ceased immediately, and hematochezia healed subsequently. Intermittently take Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction), and within a few days, the disease was completely eradicated. The son of Secretary Shen also verified the efficacy of this prescription.
[Hai Zang] "Food Therapy" states: She Tui Pi (Ophichus Skin) primarily expels Wind pathogen, brightens the eyes, treats 120 types of pediatric convulsive disorders, epilepsy, colds, fevers, hemorrhoids, gu poison, and calms the fetus; it should be roasted before use. For treating convulsive disorders with tongue protrusion and head shaking, complete skins should be used.
