[Formula Song] The symptoms of throat lichen (Hou Xuan) include dryness of the pharynx and the growth of moss-like lesions. Initially, there is itching, followed by dry cracking and pain. Excessive consumption of medicinal wine and pungent/spicy foods (Wu Xin) leads to ulceration that spreads, resembling the shape of ant-burrowed wood.
[Commentary] This condition is also known as "Heavenly White Ants" (Tian Bai Yi). The patient experiences dryness of the pharynx and esophagus; initially, there is a sensation of itching, followed by the emergence of moss-like lesions with a dark, woody-red color, accompanied by dry cracking and pain. There is frequent expectoration of foul-smelling saliva, which hinders eating and drinking. This disease arises from overconsumption of roasted foods, medicinal wines, and five pungent spices, causing heat accumulation in the Stomach. Stomach fire then steams and affects the Lung, resulting in this ailment. It is appropriate to administer Guangbi Shunian Decoction. For lesions not yet ulcerated, apply Fanjing San (Alum Essence Powder) via insufflation; for ulcerated lesions, apply Qingliang San (Cooling Powder) via insufflation. Patients should cultivate a calm mind and reduce desires, and abstain from rich flavors and triggering foods. Perhaps one or two out of ten cases may be cured. If treatment is neglected, combined with improper care, the lesion may become moldy, spread and enlarge, form layers of necrotic tissue, and develop small holes on the sides, resembling ant-burrowed wood. Such cases are mostly incurable.
