Treats severe, cramping pain in the heart and abdomen after childbirth, causing extreme suffering, or blood stasis clouding the Heart orifices, leading to unconsciousness.
Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung) and Puhuang (Typha Pollen) in equal parts. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with wine and ingest.
Nanshan Zharen (Crataegi Fructus, stir-fried) 1 liang. Decoct with water, mix with Tongbian (Child's Urine) and Shatang (Brown Sugar) for ingestion.
[Collected Annotations] Wu Yuxuan stated: The Classics state: The Heart governs Blood, the Spleen controls Blood, and the Liver stores Blood. Therefore, when postpartum blood stasis stagnates, the Heart, Spleen, and Liver meridians are all affected, resulting in abdominal blood-stasis pain, aversion to cold with fever, mental confusion and dizziness, and fullness/stuffiness in the uterus and diaphragm. In such cases, it is due to cold coagulation failing to dissipate and Qi stagnation failing to circulate, causing lochia to remain, presenting as lower abdominal knotting and pain, mental confusion nearly reaching death. Only by purely using sweet-warm formulas that break and move blood can the pathogenic factors be attacked and cleared. This formula uses Wulingzhi, whose sweet-warm nature travels to the Liver; when used raw, it moves blood. Puhuang is acrid-pungent and neutral, entering the Liver; when used raw, it breaks blood. Assisted by wine decoction to enhance its power, it can directly resolve the stagnation of the Jueyin meridian, achieving the effect of pushing out the old and generating the new. Sweetness does not harm the Spleen, and pungency disperses stasis. Unknowingly, all symptoms are eliminated, truly allowing one to laugh it off. As for Dusheng San, why use only Zharen decocted strongly, taken with Shatang and Tongbian? Zharen not only aids digestion and strengthens the Spleen but also has the function of breaking stasis and stopping "Erzhen Tong" (postpartum abdominal pain). Furthermore, adding the sweetness of Shatang expels evil [lochia] without harming the Spleen, and the saltiness of Tongbian enters the Uterus without cooling the lower body. They complement each other, possessing great power, hence named Dusheng (Solely Sacred), which is indeed not in vain.
Treats Five Exhaustions and Seven Damages, where there is dry blood internally, skin rough like scales (Jiacuo), and dark circles around the eyes.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, steamed with wine) 10 liang, Taoren (Peach Seed, peeled and halved, stir-fried) 4 liang, Xingren (Apricot Seed, peeled and halved, stir-fried) 4 liang, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, stir-fried) 2 liang, Gancao (Licorice Root) 3 liang, Shaoyao (White Peony Root, stir-fried) 4 liang, Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) 10 liang, Ganqi (Lacquer Tree Resin, stir-fried) 1 liang, Mengchong (Blatta Orientalis, wings and feet removed, stir-fried) 1.5 qian, Shuizhi (Hirudo, roasted until yellow) 100 pieces, Qicao (Ground Beetle Larva, stir-fried) 1.5 qian, Zhechong (Eupolyphaga Steleophaga, head and feet removed, stir-fried) 1 liang. The above twelve ingredients are powdered, mixed with honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take 5 pills with wine, three times a day.
[Collected Annotations] Li Zhongzi stated: In syndromes of Lao Shang (Exhaustion and Damage), skin rough like scales and dark circles around the eyes indicate internal blood stasis. When stasis persists for a long time, it inevitably generates heat. Heat evaporates fluids, causing blood to dry within the meridians. The more dried, the hotter; the hotter, the more dried, damaging new blood. What nourishes the bones and muscles and provides luster to the human body is solely this blood. If blood is damaged, it cannot moisten the skin, hence Jiacuo (skin roughness). Eyes see because they receive blood; if blood is depleted, they lack nourishment, hence the eyes appear dark. Zhang Zhongjing clearly perceived this syndrome, recognizing that tonification is inappropriate and cooling is useless, thus establishing this formula. The Classics state: Blood has the function of moistening, so Dihuang is used as the Sovereign herb. For hardness, reduce it, so Dahuang is used as the Minister herb. The Spleen controls blood; the Spleen desires relief from tension, so sweet substances are used to soothe it. Also, sour and bitter induce vomiting and purgation, belonging to Yin, so Gancao, Shaoyao, and Taoren are used as Assistant herbs. Salty flavors travel to the Blood level, and bitter flavors overcome blood [stasis/heat], so Ganqi's bitterness and the saltiness of the four insects are used as Envoy herbs. If turbid Yin does not descend, clear Yang cannot ascend; if blood stasis is not removed, new blood cannot be generated. Nowadays, people encountering a Lao syndrome immediately use yin-nourishing drugs. When ineffective, they sit and wait for death. Is medical skill really limited to this!
