Prescription for Food-related Restlessness or [or] Restlessness
[Commentary]
The character "Shi" (式) in "Food-related Restlessness and Shi Restlessness" should be "Huo" (或, meaning 'or'), and it ought to be corrected.
Question: What are the eighteen Yang diseases? The Master said: Headache, pulling pain in the neck, waist, spine, arms, and legs. What are the eighteen Yin diseases? The Master said: Cough, rebellious Qi (Qi rebelling upwards), wheezing, hiccups, throat discomfort, borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), distension and fullness, heart pain, and spasm/tightness. Each of the Five Zang organs has eighteen diseases, totaling ninety diseases; humans also have six Minor conditions, each with eighteen diseases, totaling one hundred and eight diseases. The Five Exhaustions, Seven Injuries, Six Extremes, and Thirty-six Diseases of Women are not included in these counts. Clear pathogenic factors reside above, turbid pathogenic factors reside below, major pathogenic factors strike the exterior, minor pathogenic factors strike the interior. □Tuo pathogenic factors enter through the mouth, which is retained food. When the five pathogenic factors affect the center, there are specific rules: wind strikes in the morning, cold strikes in the evening, dampness injures the lower part, fog/mist injures the upper part. Wind causes the pulse to be floating, cold causes the pulse to be tight/rapid. Fog/mist injures the skin and interstices, dampness flows into the joints. Food injury affects the Spleen and Stomach, extreme cold injures the meridians, extreme heat injures the collaterals.
Discussion: Baihe Bing (Lily Disease, a condition characterized by vague symptoms affecting all vessels) occurs when all vessels, originating from one source, are simultaneously affected. The patient desires to eat but cannot; often remains silent; desires to lie down but cannot; desires to walk but cannot. Appetite may vary, sometimes finding food pleasant, other times unable to bear the smell of food. They feel as if cold but are not actually cold, feel as if hot but are not actually hot; the mouth is bitter, urine is red. Various medicines cannot cure it; taking medicine leads to severe vomiting and diarrhea. It seems as if possessed by spirits, yet the body shape appears normal, and the pulse is slightly rapid. If headache occurs during urination, recovery takes sixty days; if no headache during urination but feeling chilly, recovery takes forty days; if urination is smooth but accompanied only by dizziness, recovery takes twenty days. These symptoms may appear before the disease manifests, emerge after four or five days of illness, or appear faintly after twenty days or a month. Treatment should follow the specific manifestations.
In men with a normal pulse, if it is weak, deficient, fine, and subtle, they are prone to night sweats (stealing sweat).
