Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Shihu (Stem Dendrobii Nobile)
Quanxie (Scorpio) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis)
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae)
Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori) [Each of the above: 1 qian] Xionghuang (Realgar, 6 qian)
The above sixteen ingredients are ground into fine powder, formed into pills with refined honey, each pill weighing 3 qian, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar), and stored in porcelain jars. Use according to the patient's age, constitution, and the severity of the condition. For malignant sores in the initial two to three days, or for carbuncles and ulcers that have formed but not yet suppurated within ten days, presenting symptoms similar to Shanghan (Cold Damage syndrome) such as headache, irritability, thirst, limb stiffness, aversion to cold, generalized pain, nausea, vomiting, heaviness of limbs, mental confusion, high skin fever, as well as seasonal colds complicated by epidemic diseases with aversion to cold and fever, this medicine is suitable. Administer one pill mixed with decoction of nine stalks of Congbai (Scallion White). Cover with blankets until sweating occurs, which indicates efficacy. If sweating is delayed, induce it with scallion decoction; profuse sweating like a shower should occur naturally. Avoid exposure to wind. The patient will feel comfortable; unformed sores will dissipate, and formed sores will swell, suppurate, and drain. If there are no exterior-interior complex syndromes, dispersing action is unnecessary; dissolve in hot wine instead.
Commentary: This formula was originally recorded under the section for various wind-induced paralysis. It is reproduced here because sores and ulcers arise from disharmony of Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, and stagnation of Qi and Blood, leading to swelling. This medicine specifically disperses, promotes Qi flow, expels wind, and unblocks meridians, embodying the principle of "opening blockages." The Classics state: "Sweating cures sores," which aligns perfectly with this method. After administration, avoid wind, refrain from cold foods, and abstain from sexual activity. Pregnant women should not take this medicine.
[Formula Song] Wanling Dan treats various Bi syndromes, this medicine also treats sores and ulcers, releasing exterior pathogenic toxins through sweat, unblocking meridians with extraordinary effect. Contains Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanwu, Caowu, Chuanxiong, Shihu, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Quanxie, Danggui, Gancao, Tianma, Heshouwu, and Xionghuang.
Attributes: When sores and ulcers first appear, if they are swollen, elevated, red, and painful, cool medicines should be applied externally to overcome heat with cold. However, excessive use causes toxin condensation due to cold, transforming into Yin syndromes. If swelling is diffuse without redness, appearing to have a head but painless, warm medicines should be applied to guide the toxin outward. The Classics state: "Releasing the exterior does not distance itself from heat"; applying warm medicines is also a method of releasing the exterior. When preparing external applications, stir frequently to ensure viscosity. After application, tearing off the paper prevents cracking. Moisten occasionally with original juice; moisture helps open pores, while dryness prevents medicinal qi penetration and increases stiffness and pain. When removing external medication, check for perspiration in pores, indicating unblocked blood vessels and dissipated heat; the opposite is adverse.
