Cold Qi, Heat Qi (Re Qi), Joy Qi, Anger Qi, Labor Qi, Thought Qi, Sorrow Qi, Fear Qi, Fright Qi.
1. A single Qi, when disturbed by external or internal factors, can manifest as nine types of pathological conditions: Cold, Heat, Joy, Anger, Labor, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, and Fright. Cold causes contraction and external binding, leading to the closure of Couli (pores and interstitial spaces); Heat causes dispersion and internal steaming, leading to the opening of Couli; Joy relaxes Qi, but in cases of extreme deficiency, it leads to Qi scattering; Labor consumes Qi, while Thought causes Qi stagnation and difficult movement; Anger causes Qi to rebel upwards, which may severely result in hematemesis (vomiting blood); if this rebellious Qi descends to attack a deficient Spleen, it results in Sundun diarrhea (diarrhea with undigested food); Fear causes Qi to sink downwards, damaging Essence and will; Fright leaves the Heart without support, causing mental confusion and palpitations (Zhengchong); Sorrow consumes Ying and Wei Qi, preventing their normal distribution; robust individuals maintain strong movement, while weak individuals are prone to various diseases.
[Annotation] If the flow of Qi is unobstructed and not touched by pathogenic factors, what disease would arise? If touched by Cold, it binds externally on the skin, closing the Couli, causing Qi to contract; this is a Cold disease. [Textual gap/variant]: Heat. If touched by Heat, steaming causes sweating, opening the Couli, causing Qi to leak out; this is a Summerheat disease. If touched by Joy, Joy harmonizes Qi and allows the will to reach freely, relaxing the Qi. In those who are inherently extremely deficient, relaxation leads to Qi scattering, known as sudden collapse (Bao Tuo). If touched by Labor, labor causes panting and sweating, consuming Qi; this is Fatigue and Exhaustion. If touched by Thought, where the mind dwells on something, Qi remains stagnant and does not move, causing Qi knotting; this is Stagnant Qi. If touched by Anger, anger causes Qi to rebel upwards, severely leading to hematemesis, with Qi moving upward. When Qi rebels to the extreme and descends to attack the deficiency of the Spleen, it results in Sundun diarrhea. If touched by Fear, fear causes Essence to retreat and damages Essence and will, with Qi sinking downward. If touched by Fright, the Heart has no foundation, the Spirit has no return, and thoughts have no certainty, causing Qi to become chaotic. Zhengchong refers to the disease of restless heart palpitations. If touched by Sorrow, the Qi of the Heart and Lungs becomes sorrowful, and Ying and Wei Qi do not disperse, causing Qi to diminish. For these nine types of diseases arising from Qi disturbances, robust individuals recover as their Qi flows smoothly, while weak individuals develop illness as their Qi becomes stagnant.
