*Yangsheng Yaoji* states: On the day of He Tu Di Shi Meng, those who violate the laws of Heaven and Earth will face misfortune. Those who follow the timing of Heaven will be auspicious. In spring and summer, it is beneficial to dwell in high places on joyous mountains; in autumn and winter, one should reside in low, deep places and conceal oneself, which is auspicious, leading to abundant blessings, longevity, and endlessness.
*Qianjin Fang* states: One's residence must not be ornate or luxurious, as this induces greed (li nan fan, meaning greed), insatiability, and damage to one's will. It is best to maintain elegance, simplicity, cleanliness, and hygiene, avoiding wind, rain, heat, and dampness.
It further states: Living quarters must be tightly sealed to prevent small gaps through which wind qi can enter unnoticed over time, causing stroke (Zhong Feng).
It also states: If one feels a draft in the room, do not endure sitting still for long; one must rise and move to avoid it.
It also states: Do not place beds against the north wall, nor sit facing north for prolonged contemplation, as this is inauspicious; one should rise and leave.
It also states: When getting into bed, remove the left foot first.
It also states: If suddenly encountering strong winds, heavy rain, or thick fog while at home or traveling, these are caused by the movement of dragons, ghosts, and spirits. One should enter the room, close the doors, burn incense, sit quietly, calm the mind to avoid them, and only go out after they have passed. Otherwise, it harms people; even if no harm occurs immediately, it may lead to future misfortune.
It also states: If there are scriptures or Buddha images at home, one should bow to them before leaving, and then bow to elders.
It also states: When passing temples, do not enter casually. If entering, one must be respectful, not looking around freely, but as if facing a strict father, so as to receive blessings.
*Yanshou Chishu* states: The Lady of Mount Nan says: Beds should be kept high so that earth qi cannot reach, preventing ghost breath from drying. Ghost qi invades humans, often rising from the ground upwards. (A bed height of three chi six cun prevents ghost qi from reaching.)
*Yangsheng Yaoji* cites *Shenxian Tu*: Prohibit excessive ejaculation, or life will be cut short; prohibit overeating, or meridians will close; prohibit excessive sighing leading to essence leakage; prohibit standing too long causing extreme mental fatigue; prohibit excessive heat, or marrow and bones will be consumed; prohibit excessive drinking, or the bladder will become urgent; prohibit lying down too long, or essence will become stagnant; prohibit excessive cold, or muscles will be damaged; prohibit staring too long, or eyes will dim; prohibit speaking too long, or the tongue will dry up; prohibit sitting too long, or qi will rebel; prohibit eating hot food, or the five qi will be damaged; prohibit coughing and spitting, or lubricating fluids will be lost; prohibit anger, or the spirit will not be joyful; prohibit sleeping too much, or the spirit will become lax; prohibit eating cold food, or illness stagnation will occur; prohibit runny nose, or it will cause涩溃 (astringency and ulceration); prohibit excessive joy, or the spirit will escape; prohibit distant gazing, or shen qi will be labored; prohibit listening too long, or hearing will be closed; prohibit eating raw food, or intestines and stomach will be harmed; prohibit loud calling, or soul and魂魄 will be startled; prohibit long journeys, or sinews and bones will be labored; prohibit prolonged thinking, or willpower will become confused; prohibit drunkenness, or vital qi will be damaged; prohibit crying, or the spirit will feel sorrowful; prohibit imbalance of the five flavors, or intestines and stomach will be harmed; prohibit riding too long, or meridians will be damaged. These twenty-eight prohibitions are taboos of the Heavenly Dao. Not avoiding these taboos yields no benefit in practicing the Dao.
It also states: *Zhong Jing* says: Shouting loudly during hunting or fishing severs organ qi. Some may feel immediate disgust, or remain unaware initially, developing disease one or two years later, which even good physicians cannot treat.
*Bao Pu Zi* states: Struggling with thoughts beyond one's capacity causes injury. Forcing lifts beyond one's strength causes injury. Deep worry and intense resentment cause injury. Grief and emaciation cause injury. Excessive joy causes injury. Inhaling desired objects causes injury. Worrying about feared matters causes injury. Prolonged talking and laughing cause injury. Irregular sleep and rest cause injury. Drawing bows and crossbows causes injury. Intoxication and vomiting cause injury. Lying down immediately after full meals causes injury. Running and jumping until panting and exhausted cause injury. Crying and shouting cause injury. Lack of yin-yang intercourse causes injury. Accumulating yang to exhaustion is not the Way. Therefore, methods of nourishing life include: not spitting far, walking not fast, ears not listening to extremes, eyes not gazing for long, sitting not until tired, lying not until tired, dressing before feeling cold, undressing before feeling hot, not eating until extremely hungry (food should not be too much), not drinking until extremely thirsty (drinks should not be too much). Overeating leads to accumulation masses; overdinking leads to phlegm癖 (phlegm nodules). Avoid excessive labor, avoid excessive leisure, avoid profuse sweating, avoid excessive spitting, avoid chasing cars and horses, avoid extreme distance gazing, avoid eating too much raw and cold food, avoid drinking wine in the wind, avoid frequent bathing, avoid having overly broad ambitions, avoid crafting strange novelties. In winter, avoid extreme warmth; in summer, avoid extreme coolness; avoid sleeping under stars, avoid seeing fans while sleeping; avoid exposure to extreme cold, heat, wind, and fog.
It also states: Someone asked: What are the prohibitions for cultivating the path of longevity? Bao Pu Zi said: The most urgent prohibition is simply not to injure or diminish oneself.
Note: *Yi Neijie*, *Chisongzi Jing*, and *Hetu Jiming Fu* all state: There are deities in Heaven and Earth who oversee faults, deducting one's lifespan (suan) based on the severity of offenses. There are hundreds of such offenses, too numerous to list fully. Hating goodness and loving killing, being hypocritical, speaking differently behind backs, deviating from truth, abusing subordinates, deceiving superiors, betraying masters, ungrateful for favors, manipulating laws for bribes, perverting justice for personal gain, punishing the innocent, destroying families, stealing treasures, harming bodies, usurping positions, oppressing the worthy, executing the surrendered, slandering sages, injuring Daoists, shooting birds, breaking eggs, hunting in spring/summer and winter, cursing spirits, teaching evil, hiding others' good deeds, benefiting oneself at others' expense, endangering others for self-security, stealing credit, ruining good deeds, taking what others love, separating families, humiliating others to win, taking long debts, setting fires/flooding to harm, coercing the weak, swapping bad for good, forcing demands, looting for wealth, injustice, lewdness, bullying the weak, picking up lost items for luxury, deception, gossiping about privacy, holding grudges, invoking heaven/earth, praying for righteousness, borrowing without returning, lending without repayment, endless desires, hating loyalty/trust, disobeying orders, disrespecting teachers, mocking good deeds, ruining crops, damaging property, starving others, feeding unclean food, using false measures, mixing fake with real, seeking illicit profit, tempting others to steal, crossing wells/stoves, singing on dark days/crying on bright days. Each constitutes a sin. Siming deducts lifespan records based on severity. When records end, one dies. If records remain but one does not die naturally, disaster falls on descendants.
*Qianjin Fang* states: The way of nourishing life involves avoiding: prolonged walking, standing, lying, sitting, listening, or viewing; re-eating, forced eating, forced drunkenness, lifting heavy weights, worrying, anger, grief, excessive joy, jumping, excessive speech/laughter, rushing for desires, harboring resentment. All these shorten life. Avoiding them allows for longevity.
It also states: Daily taboo: do not eat full at night. Monthly taboo: do not get drunk at dusk. Yearly taboo: do not travel far at year-end. Lifelong taboo: do not engage in sexual intercourse with candles lit.
It also states: Do not deeply love what the heart loves, nor deeply hate what the heart hates; both damage nature and spirit. Do not deeply hide or deeply destroy; always treat things equally and correct bias immediately.
It also states: Sudden heat in winter or sudden coolness in summer should not be indulged. Epidemics arise from violating this.
It also states: In winter, when heaven and earth are closed and blood/qi is stored, one should not exert oneself to sweat, as releasing yang qi harms the body.
It also states: Do not startle at seeing dragons or snakes, nor gaze intently. Do not force suppression upon seeing strange phenomena; do not find them strange. As the proverb says: "If you see the strange but do not regard it as strange, the strange destroys itself."
