The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Generally, humans have four upright postures: walking upright, sitting upright, standing upright, and speaking upright. One should stop eating when hungry and walk about after being full.
It further states: When walking, standing, or sitting, do not turn your back to the sun or the moon.
It also states: In cold weather, sit in the lotus position (Jiafu Zuo); in warm weather, sleep with legs extended. Sitting upright with feet spread in an "eight" shape dispels cold and treats five types of hemorrhoids.
It also states: When walking or riding a horse, do not look back; looking back causes the Shen (Spirit) to leave the body.
The *Yangsheng Zhi* (Records of Nourishing Life) states: Do not sit with crossed arms and knees upon rising in the morning; this is inauspicious.
The *Yangsheng Yaoji* (Essentials of Nourishing Life) states: The *Neijie* (Inner Explanation) mentions: When lying down, one should lie flat on the back with limbs straight, remaining at peace without side-lying, prone-lying, overexertion, or tilting. Constantly contemplate the clarity of the internal and external aspects of the Five Zang Organs. When intending to sleep, do not fall asleep during Hai Hour (9 PM–11 PM). At this time, heaven, earth, humans, and all things enter sleep, akin to death and connecting with the path of ghosts. If others die while you alone live, it is unfavorable. When intending to sleep, it is best to fall asleep during Zi Hour (11 PM–1 AM). At this time, although heaven, earth, humans, and all things are asleep, a breath of Sheng Qi (Vital Energy) begins to emerge and return. Do not sleep in the same manner as ordinary people; instead, constantly follow the changes of the Four Seasons and Eight Solar Terms. Rise early in Spring and Summer, waking with the roosters; rise late in Autumn and Winter, ensuring sunlight is present. Do not go against this rule; going against it causes injury.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: In Spring, when desiring to rise from bed, wake up early; in Summer and Autumn, when desiring to rest, lie down late at night and wake up early; in Winter, sleep early but wake up late. All these practices benefit the person.
Although it says wake up early, do not do so before the rooster crows. Although it says wake up late, do not do so after the sun has risen.
It also states: When sleeping, face East in Spring and Summer, and West in Autumn and Winter; this is the standard method.
It also states: When going to bed in the evening, habitually keep the mouth closed. Opening the mouth causes loss of Qi, and evil pathogens may enter.
It also states: Sleeping with bent knees in a lateral position enhances physical strength and is superior to lying flat on the back.
It also states: Sleep does not disdain curling up; waking does not disdain stretching out. (Generally, if one sleeps stretched out, evil spirits or nightmares may take advantage, so one should only stretch out upon waking.)
It also states: Men should not sleep with their heads pointing North. Do not sleep directly under the ridgepole of the roof. After sleeping, do not leave lamps or candles burning, as this unsettles the Hun (Ethereal Soul), Po (Corporeal Soul), and the Six Spirits, leading to sorrow and resentment.
It also states: Walk with the gait of a King Goose; sleep with the posture of a Lion. (Lie on the right side, with knees bent.)
It also states: Regarding sleep, first calm the Xin (Heart/Mind), then the body will settle.
It also states: A person typically turns over about five times during a night's sleep.
It also states: Upon waking, do not open the mouth; doing so for a long time leads to Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Diabetes) and loss of blood color.
It also states: One must not sleep too deeply, as this causes loss of Qi.
It also states: Do not cover the head when sleeping at night; this promotes longevity.
It also states: When sleeping at night, do not let ears face drafts/holes; otherwise, deafness may result.
The *Zhenzhong Fang* states: Do not sleep on winter Jiazi days at night.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: When a person yawns, do not call them by lighting a lamp; this will surely cause death from fright. Calling them secretly is auspicious. Also, do not approach closely and call urgently.
It also states: When sleeping, do not hang feet high up; doing so for a long time depletes Kidney Water, damages sexual function, and causes cold feet.
It also states: In summer, do not sleep outdoors on the roof; this makes facial skin prone to tinea (ringworm). (Another view suggests facial wind-stroke.)
It also states: Do not place a charcoal stove near the head; daily exposure to fire Qi causes heavy head, red eyes, and dry nose.
