Treats insomnia (insomnia) resulting from disrupted sleep-wake rhythms. If there is damp-heat (Damp-Heat) in the Stomach, use this formula:
Jiang Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum, 1 liang) with five sheng of water. Decoct until three sheng remain, remove the dregs. Add Shumi (Sorghum Vulgare, 3 he), decoct until two sheng remain. Divide into two doses and take.
Treats insomnia caused by Liver deficiency (Liver Deficiency):
Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 3 qian), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried 1.5 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 8 fen).
If phlegm (Phlegm) is present, add Jiang Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum, 1 qian) and Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 7 fen), decoct with water.
Treats palpitations/fright caused by hyperactive Liver Wood (Hyperactive Liver Wood), also treating infantile convulsions (Infantile Convulsions):
Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 2 qian), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 5 fen), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried 1 qian), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha, raw 8 qian), Hupo (Amber, 1 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 5 fen), Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice, 1 spoon to be mixed in).
Regarding pulse diagnosis, the pulse of the Liver Meridian should be Xian (Wiry) and Chang (Long). A Xian (Wiry) and straight pulse indicates that Liver Wood energy is expansive. If a Xian (Wiry) pulse is encountered at the Chi position accompanied by symptoms related to the belt vessel, it suggests that the Child (Liver/Wood) is attacking the Mother (Kidney/Water), causing damage to Kidney Water. The appearance of a new pulse revealing the true Liver pulse (True Organ Pulse) indicates that even a skilled physician may not be able to cure it. A floating and Xian (Wiry) pulse at the Cun position indicates upward movement of Wind-Wood. If this pulse is found at the Guan or Cun positions, it indicates that Earth (Spleen/Stomach) is being damaged. Characteristics of Liver disease pulses include: Shu (Rapid) indicates Wind-Heat; Xian Chi (Wiry and Slow) indicates Kidney injury; Xian Lao (Wiry and Firm) indicates chronic stubborn disease; Xian Ge (Wiry and Leathery) indicates difficult-to-cure conditions. If the pulse can become He Huan (Harmonious and Gentle), it signifies the restoration of Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) and difficulty for pathogenic factors to invade. In such cases, medication should be avoided, and abstaining from medicine is the best prescription.
Liver Meridian diseases mainly include: Swelling (Edema), Diarrhea (Diarrhoea), and Parasitic Accumulation (Intestinal Parasites).
The Spleen is called the "Official of Granaries" and belongs to the Postnatal Foundation. If the Prenatal Essence is insufficient, it relies entirely on the Postnatal Spleen and Stomach for supplementation. Once the Postnatal Spleen and Stomach are diseased, the consequences are significant. Regarding the discussion of Spleen and Stomach: The Spleen belongs to Earth. By benefiting [the Spleen], one can control [Wood/Dampness]... (Note: Original text has fragmented sentences here, interpreted as strengthening Spleen to control pathological factors). Swelling is often due to Yin Water (Yin Edema). Furthermore, treating diseases not caused by internal or external factors refers to Zhang Zhongjing's methods of "Opening the Ghost Gate" (diaphoresis/sweating) and "Cleaning the Fu Organs" (diuresis). As for diarrhea, it is also caused by Spleen deficiency failing to control Water and Stomach deficiency failing to receive Water. Treating diarrhea must also involve controlling Liver Wood. If Liver Wood does not attack Earth, how can Water invade? It is said in books: "Treating diarrhea without promoting urination is not the correct treatment." Parasitic accumulation arises because weak Earth cannot overcome Dampness; when Dampness transforms into Heat and accumulates, parasites are generated. Therefore, treating parasites requires first clearing Damp-Heat, followed by warming the Spleen and Kidney. Zhang Zhongjing had Anhui Wan (Ascaris-Calming Pill) to dissolve parasites and calm the Stomach, which was most effective. Later treatments for parasites did not go beyond this scope. Gastralgia (Stomach Pain) is a symptom with many ancient formulas, yet lacking definite efficacy. Why? Because the Stomach resides in the Middle Jiao, and pathogens from the Lung, Heart, Liver, and Kidney can invade it, leading to complex variations. This is mostly due to severe Yang deficiency, unable to irrigate fluids, causing fluid retention and pain. Zhang Zhongjing used Xiaobanxia Tang (Minor Pinellia Decoction) to treat fluid retention, Xiexin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction) to harmonize the Spleen and Stomach, and Lingjiangshugui Tang (Poria, Ginger, Atractylodes, and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) to tonify the Middle Earth. Treatment methods do not exceed these principles. If aggressive attacking methods are used recklessly, damaging Stomach Earth, vomiting, belching, and hiccups will all result.
The second type is Xuanyin (Suspension Fluid Retention), the third is Yiyin (Overflowing Fluid Retention), and the fourth is Zhiyin (Supporting Fluid Retention). If a person who was previously robust now becomes thin, with water flowing between the intestines making a gurgling sound, it is called Tanyin (Phlegm-Fluid Retention). After drinking, if water flows under the hypochondrium and coughing/sputum causes pulling pain, where water is sucked by Qi and difficult to flow downward, it is called Xuanyin. When fluid pathogens scatter to the four limbs, causing heavy body pain that cannot be resolved through sweating, leading to fluid overflow sideways, it is called Yiyin. When one must lean to breathe and cannot lie flat, with Qi forcing upward and physical swelling, it is called Zhiyin. All the above diseases are attributed to the Spleen. Examining the *Jinkui Yaolue*, there are no omissions.
