Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1.5 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Man Jing Zi (Viticis Fructus) (7 pieces).
Shui Han (Water Hernia), characterized by enlargement of the scrotum and continuous sweating in the genital area, is primarily treated with this formula.
Zi He said: The cause of Shui Han lies in excessive drinking or intoxication, combined with sexual exhaustion. His statement is accurate. Excessive drinking or intoxication leads to an excess of dampness, while sexual exhaustion depletes Kidney Qi. When Kidney Qi is deficient, it is inevitable that excess dampness flows into the Kan (Lower Jiao/Kidney) region, resulting in a scrotal swelling like crystal and continuous leakage-like sweating in the genital area.
Man Jing Zi and Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) are pungent and clear in aroma; they are wind-dispelling herbs and also ascending herbs. Thus, they can overcome dampness and raise Yang. The sweetness of Huang Qin can support sinking Qi. The warmth of Gan Cao can fortify the Spleen Earth, which controls water. The moistening nature of Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) can harmonize Ying Blood within the group of wind-dispelling herbs. Wei Ling Tang (Poria Decoction) from the Diarrhea section may also be used酌情ly.
Zao Xin Tu (Fuxlonggan / Hearth Soil) is also known as Fuxlonggan. Earth is sufficient to control water, and dryness is sufficient to overcome dampness. For Shui Han, applying this substance as a fine powder to the scrotum is also a good method.
Sheng Gan Cao Shao (Tip of Raw Licorice Root) (2 liang), Hei Dou (Black Soybean) (0.5 jin).
Boil with five times the amount of water until half remains, and take on an empty stomach.
Jin Han (Sinew Hernia) is primarily treated with this formula.
Jin Han is characterized by pulling pain in the penile sinews and unbearable distension during erection. Zi He said: This arises from "evil arts," specifically referring to sexual techniques and aphrodisiacs. Treatment should focus on resolving toxicity and relaxing urgency; therefore, Gan Cao Shao and Hei Dou are used.
When the external kidneys are injured by falls or blows, causing unilateral testicular enlargement and occasional pain due to intra-abdominal blood stasis, it is named Xue Han (Blood Hernia). It is advisable to use one hand to support the lower part and the other to press the upper part at night, massaging gently to firmly for a hundred times. Within a month, the blood stasis will dissipate completely, and stagnant Qi will circulate freely. This is indeed a wonderful technique! Even if long-standing, there is no case that cannot be cured.
Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried with salted wine), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, stir-fried with salted wine), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (each 3 liang), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried with wine), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, moistened with salted water and dried), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (each 2 liang), Gui Ban (Testudo Carapax et Plastrum, roasted with suet), Suo Yang (Cynomorii Herba, moistened with wine and dried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine) (each 1.5 liang), Hu Jing Gu (Tigris Ossis Tibia, roasted with suet) (1 liang).
Grind into powder and form pills using mutton paste.
Qi Han (Qi Hernia), where testicular enlargement occurs due to emotional depression and subsides spontaneously due to grief, is primarily treated with this formula.
Evil pathogens often gather where there is deficiency. Testicular enlargement due to depression results from Liver Qi invading the deficiency of the Kidney. Spontaneous resolution due to grief indicates the release of Qi. Ancient physicians stated: The treatment for Liver and Kidney diseases is similar. Therefore, Huang Bai, Zhi Mu, Shu Di, Shao Yao, Niu Xi, Dang Gui, and Suo Yang, being substances with strong flavors, can tonify both the Kidney and the Liver. The turtle possesses the strongest Yin Qi of heaven and earth, and the tiger possesses the most vigorous Yin Qi. Using these Yin-class substances from blood and Qi to tonify Yin aims for resonance of similar energies (Tong Qi Xiang Qiu); Yin Pi (referring to the inner membrane or related parts of the turtle shell) is used for its ability to push out stale Qi. Mutton is used for its ability to tonify the Yang of the Five Zang Organs.
Someone asked: Why not use Ju He Ren (Arilluss Citri Grandis), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chuan Lian Zi (Meliae Fructus), or Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride)? I replied: These are all Qi-breaking herbs. Although past physicians often used them, they only treat the branch (symptoms). Moreover, do they not violate the warning against further weakening the deficient? They can only be used when Qi is Excess.
