Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Jiuxi, Danggui) [Washed with wine] Fructus Gardeniae (Chaohei, Zhizi) [Stir-fried until charred] Radix et Rhizoma Gentianae (Jiuxi, Longdancao) [Washed with wine] Rhizoma Coptidis (Chao, Huanglian) [Stir-fried] Cortex Phellodendri (Chao, Huangbai) [Stir-fried] Radix Scutellariae (Ge Yiliang, Huangqin) [Each: 1 liang] Wood Aromata (Yiqian, Muxiang) [1 qian] Moschus (Wufen, Shexiang) [5 fen] Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Jiujin, Dahuang) [Soaked in wine] Concha Mantisidis (Shuifei, Qingdai) [Processed by water flotation] Aloe (Banliang, Lvhui) [Each: 0.5 liang]
Made into pills using refined honey.
For cough caused by liver heat transferring to the lung, this formula is indicated.
Cough accompanied by pain in both hypochondria, irritability, and a wiry pulse indicates that the pathology originates from the liver. The liver is regarded as the "General," and its qi is often in excess; excess qi transforms into fire, thus it is appropriate to use purgative methods. In this formula, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Longdancao (Gentian Root), Qingdai (Concha Mantisidis), and Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) all possess fire-purging properties, yet they do not necessarily enter the liver meridian. The liver has a fishy odor; when various herbs acquire the fishy odor of Lvhui (Aloe) and Shexiang (Moschus), they seek similar energies (Tongqi Xiangqiu) and can thereby enter the liver meridian to soothe the liver. However, as the wood of the liver is the root of fire generation, and the fire of the five zang organs often fans each other, although these drugs are guided into the liver by Lvhui and Shexiang, their individual natures belong to specific categories, allowing them to treat the fire of all five zang organs simultaneously. Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) is used as the Sovereign herb because it can harmonize the yin of the five zang organs; Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) is used as an Assistant herb because it can move stagnation among the various drugs. For detailed examination, refer to the "Fire Gate" section.
Rhizoma Coptidis (Liuliang, Huanglian) [6 liang] Fructus Evodiae (Yiliang, Wuzhuyu) [1 liang, soaked in decoction]
For left-sided hypochondriac pain and cough caused by liver heat, this formula is indicated.
The term "Zuojin" (Left Metal) refers to Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) clearing heart fire, so that lung metal is no longer fearful and can execute its descending function on the left to pacify liver wood, hence named "Left Metal." Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) has a fishy odor, pungent taste, and hot nature; therefore, it is used as a counter-agent (Fansuo). This formula consists of one Sovereign and one Minister herb, with a small dosage, because the liver pathogen is not yet vigorous; in the previous formula, the pathogenic factor was vigorous, so Longdancao (Gentian Root) and Lvhui (Aloe) were used to pacify it. Since the affliction there is more severe, it is inevitable to use a large army of drugs.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Baliang, Shudihuang) [8 liang] Dioscorea Rhizome (Shanyao) [Cornus Fruit (Siliang, Shanzhuyu) [4 liang, flesh only] Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi) [Alisma Rhizome (Zexie) [Poria (Sanliang, Baifuling) [Each: 3 liang]
For cough caused by kidney deficiency leading to heat transfer to the lung, this formula is indicated.
Symptoms such as heat in the soles of the feet, heat in the inner thighs, lower back pain, and deficient and large pulses at both chi positions indicate that the pathology originates from kidney deficiency. Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) and Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit) have rich flavors; rich flavors belong to yin within yin, thus they can tonify the kidney. The kidney is the water organ; when deficient, water pathogens gather here, so Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome) and Fuling (Poria) are used to drain the water pathogens. When water pathogens gather, damp-heat is generated, so Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) are used to guide out the heat from Kan palace. By nourishing its yin-blood and eliminating heat pathogens, essence is produced daily and the kidney remains non-deficient; once the root of the disease is removed, the cough naturally subsides. For detailed examination, refer to the "Deficiency Damage" section.
