Ren Shen (2 liang) Zhen Ge Jie (1 pair, whole, soaked in river water for five days, rinsed with fresh water each time, roasted until yellow) Xing Ren (skin and tip removed)
Gan Cao (5 liang each) Fu Ling Zhi Mu (stir-fried) Sang Bai Pi (honey-fried) Bei Mu (2 liang each)
For patients suffering from lung qi rebellion causing wheezing and asthma for two or three years, coughing with pus and blood, and sores all over the face, this formula is indicated.
Lung qi rebellion causing wheezing and asthma lasting two or three years indicates a long-standing disease and damaged lungs. Coughing up pus involves the qi level, while bleeding involves the vessel level. The face is the gathering place of clear yang; the qi of the six yang meridians converges here. Its qi is usually full and not easily invaded by pathogens. Now, having sores all over the face indicates that righteous qi is weak and pathogenic qi is flourishing, akin to petty men gaining power and noble men losing their way.
Fu Ling regulates the spleen thereby benefiting the mother of metal (lung), as earth generates metal. It is also said: Ge Jie belongs to the category of blood and qi, capable of expelling toxins from blood and qi. Thus, this formula uses it to regulate pus and blood, borrowing its nature to embed extraordinary efficacy within orthodox treatment.
Ren Shen Huang Qi (honey-fried) Chuan Wu Wei Zi (stir-fried) Zi Wan (washed to remove dirt, 1 liang each) Sang Bai Pi (honey-fried) Shu Di Huang (2 liang each)
For patients with cough due to lung deficiency, this formula is indicated.
Ren Shen and Huang Qi are herbs for the spleen and stomach. Tonifying the spleen and stomach when the lung is deficient follows the principle of "tonifying the mother when deficient." Di Huang is an herb that nourishes kidney yin. Tonifying the kidney when the lung is deficient prevents the lung from being deprived of nourishment and stealing qi from its mother (kidney). Wu Wei Zi is an astringent herb. Frequent coughing leads to qi loss, hence the use of sour flavor to astringe it. Zi Wan cools the blood in the lung, Sang Bai Pi...
Sheng Xi Jiao (sliced) Mu Dan Pi (2.5 qian each) Bai Shao Yao (2 qian) Sheng Di Huang (1.5 liang)
For patients whose heart heat transferring to the lung causes coughing and bleeding, this formula is indicated.
The heart belongs to fire; the lung belongs to metal. Fire is the controlling element of metal. When heart heat transfers to the lung, it manifests as cough accompanied by fire signs, such as hemoptysis and facial redness. This is called "thief evil" (ze xie) and is very difficult to treat. In this formula, Sheng Xi Jiao clears heart heat, Sheng Di Huang cools heart blood, and Mu Dan Pi and Bai Shao Yao have cold properties and sour flavors. Cold overcomes heat, and sour enters the liver. They are used because wood generates fire, thus directing these two herbs into the liver to drain liver fire. This is a treatment method that pulls out the root and blocks the source.
