Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, processed with honey), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chi Shao (Red Peony Root), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Tuber Fermentatum).
Add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) to decoct.
Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is used to tonify Yuan Qi (Original Qi); Dang Gui and Chi Shao are used to nourish Xue (Blood); when Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi) are harmonized, Xu Fan (deficiency-induced irritability) will naturally recede. The addition of Chai Hu and Gan Ge is because the patient has tidal fever and no sweating; it is intended to allow the pathogenic factors of the Yangming channel to exit from the muscle surface.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with red bran), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, processed with honey), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 5 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 7 qian.
Take 5 qian per dose.
Excessive dampness inevitably transforms into heat; this is the principle that heavy yin generates yang. This formula is named "Chu Shi" (Eliminating Dampness), yet the methods for clearing heat are fully contained within it; this is truly a skillful method for clearing heat.
Yin Chai Hu (Stellariae Radix), Hu Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma alternative, specifically Coptis chinensis var. teeta or related species often referred to as such in specific contexts, but strictly *Huang Lian* is Coptidis; here likely referring to a specific variant or typo for *Huang Bo* or similar, but keeping literal: *Hu Huang Lian*), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, processed with child's urine), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Gan Cao (Licorice Root, processed with honey) 0.5 fen.
When the disease progresses to Gu Zheng Lao Re (bone-steaming consumptive fever), there is entirely excess yang and deficient yin. Even large doses of blood-nourishing herbs may be insufficient; merely using cooling herbs, how can they help? Moreover, they would damage Stomach Qi, which is not a good treatment.
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Grind into fine powder, take one fang cun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a teaspoon) with fresh well water every evening, until the fever subsides.
Shi Gao is not a substance for long-term use. Although former sages had this formula, I do not adopt it.
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, stir-fried).
Equal parts, grind into powder and take. In ancient formulas, both herbs were used at 1 liang each, plus 10 grains of Ba Shuang (Crotonis Semen preparatum), and 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), chewed with warm water before bed.
Using only Er Mu (Two Mother Herbs) results in weak efficacy. Adding 10 grains of Ba Shuang in the ancient formula is particularly inappropriate.
Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried).
Equal parts, grind into powder, take 2 qian per dose, or add Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus).
Tan Huo (Phlegm-fire) obstruction causes throat pain. Using cold/cool herbs to suppress it only exacerbates the condition. Here, the method of light, clear, and dispersing action is used, completely avoiding cold/cool herbs, which is the most exquisite method.
Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 2 liang, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) 1 liang, or equal parts.
Gan Cao and Jie Geng are essential herbs for treating throat diseases. As for the methods of adding modified ingredients, they should be applied according to the symptoms.
