Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked) one sheng, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) three liang, Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) twelve pieces, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) six liang.
Evodiae Fructus is acrid and fierce, good at descending; combined with the warming and unblocking properties of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, it is used to break through excessive Yin-cold. Fearing that its acrid-dry nature might be too extreme, consuming Qi and seizing Yin, Ren Shen and Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus are used for their sweet and mild nature to moderate it. They can also tonify the Spleen Earth and support Yang, preventing turbid Yin from invading the clear orifices, making the treatment method more comprehensive.
Shuque (Sichuan Pepper Fruit) two he, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) four liang, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) two liang.
Decoct, remove dregs, add Yitang (Malt Sugar) one sheng, simmer slightly and take warm.
Without Ren Shen, one cannot greatly tonify the Heart and Spleen; without Ganjiang and Shuque, one cannot greatly dispel cold pathogens. Hence it is called "Da Jian Zhong" (Greatly Establish Middle). The sweetness and mildness of Yitang further moderates the acrid-dry nature of Ganjiang and Shuque. Only a sage physician can discern this subtlety.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, earth-fried), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber, ginger-processed), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Roucongrong (Cynomorii Herba), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
Add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) for decoction.
Adding four more herbs to Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction) results in too many Yang-tonifying herbs. If used to treat consumptive emaciation due to Yin deficiency, would it not be like adding firewood to a fire? As for Le Ling's Jianzhong Tang, adding Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), which open and penetrate vigorously, to establish Middle Qi—is this not too difficult!
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) three liang, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) six liang, Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) one liang, Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) twelve pieces.
Add Yitang (Malt Sugar) one sheng, simmer slightly on low heat and take.
When Liver Wood is too strong, it constrains Spleen Earth. When Spleen Yang fails to transport, deficiency generates cold; Yin accumulates daily while Yang diminishes daily. Thus symptoms such as borborygmus, diarrhea, and abdominal pain appear. The meaning of Xiaojianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) lies entirely in suppressing Liver Wood and supporting Spleen Earth. One should follow Wu's theory, using Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) instead of Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). Rougui warms the interior, while Guizhi releases the exterior; each has its appropriate use. Moreover, Rougui has the property of subduing Liver Wood; combined with Shaoyao to restrain the Liver, and using the sweet-warm nature of Shengjiang, Dazao, Gancao, and Yitang to tonify the Spleen, the Yang Qi of the Middle Jiao will flourish, and all Yin-cold will recede.
