Coptidis Rhizoma (stir-fried) Zingiberis Rhizoma (stir-fried) Ramulus Cinnamomi Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (3 liang) Ginseng Radix (2 liang) Pinelliae Tuber (half sheng) Jujubae Fructus (12 pieces)
This transforms the method of Jianglian Xiexin Decoction (Ginger and Coptis Decoction for Draining the Heart) into a method of regulating the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang. The simultaneous use of cold and hot herbs, along with combined tonification and dispersion, represents the best form of Harmonizing Method (He Fa).
Scutellariae Radix (3 liang) Paeoniae Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (2 liang) Jujubae Fructus (12 pieces)
In ancient times, there were no formulas specifically for treating Li Ji (dysentery/diarrhea). Since Zhang Zhongjing established this method, focusing on harmonizing the stomach and intestines, later generations followed suit and added ingredients, resulting in formulas with too many herbs, inevitably becoming overly complex.
Paeoniae Radix Alba Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted) (4 liang each)
Lack of flow causes pain. Abdominal disharmony involves rebellious Qi and turbid Yin. Here, only the method of Sweetness and Acidity generating Yin is used, causing the rebellious Qi to dissipate naturally. This also embodies the wise principle of using softness to overcome hardness.
Trichosanthis Fructus (1 piece) Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (3 liang) Baijiu (White Wine, 4 jin)
Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai) unblocks Yang; Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou) disperses stagnant Qi. Adding White Wine facilitates the movement of Qi and Blood, thereby naturally eliminating Yin shadows and opening Bi obstruction (blockage). Therefore, it is unnecessary to use acrid-dispersing and blood-consuming herbs that would damage the supreme Yuan Qi (Original Qi).
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (pith removed) Pinelliae Tuber (prepared with ginger juice) Poria Coos Licorice Root Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (bran-fried) Bambusae Folium (Zhu Ru)
Decoct with fresh ginger.
The Gallbladder is a pure and quiet organ, and its meridian has little Qi and Blood. If Phlegm-Fire disturbs it, Gallbladder Heat arises, leading to the proliferation of various diseases. "Warming the Gallbladder" does not mean warming it because it is cold; rather, it aims to keep it warm but not hot, preserving its original state of purity and tranquility. The use of Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) and Zhu Ru (Bamboo Leaf) in the formula reflects this intent.
Bupleuri Radix Angelicae Sinensis Radix (mixed with wine) Paeoniae Radix Alba (stir-fried with wine) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (soil-stir-fried) Poria Coos (1 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted) (5 fen)
Decoct with baked ginger and Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe).
Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), while nourishing Ying (Nutrient) Qi and supporting Spleen Earth, employs methods to soothe Liver Wood and promote the free flow of Gallbladder Qi. It is an excellent formula for relieving depression. Among the Five Viscera, the Liver is the most rigid. Corresponding to Spring and the element of Wood, it possesses the mechanism of growth and generation. Once constrained, its nature becomes angry and expansive, uncontrollable; furthermore, excessive Fire controls Metal, and excessive Wood controls Earth, affecting other viscera, which is logically inevitable. This formula incorporates methods of dredging and smoothing within nourishment, allowing the Liver to follow its natural nature so that various diseases settle naturally. Adding Danshen Radix et Rhizoma (Salvia Root) and Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) makes it even better for regulating menstruation, likely because women are prone to depression.
