Amomum fruit (Sharen), Agastache herb (Huoxiang), Magnolia bark (Noupu), Apricot seed (Xingren), Pinellia tuber (Banxia), Lablab bean (Bian Dou), Papaya (Mugua), Ginseng root (Renshen), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu), Red Poria (Chiling), Licorice root (Gancao), Ginger (Jiang), Jujube (Zao).
Lablab bean (Bian Dou) is frequently used in ancient formulas because of its ability to clear summerheat, promote diuresis to remove dampness, and strengthen the spleen. I consider Lablab bean (Bian Dou) to have the poorest medicinal nature; it is more ingenious to omit both Lablab bean (Bian Dou) and Ginseng root (Renshen).
Agastache herb (Huoxiang), Perilla leaf (Zisu), Angelica dahurica root (Baizhi), Areca peel (Dafupi), Poria (Fuling) 3 liang, Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu) stir-fried with soil, Tangerine peel (Chenpi), Fermented Pinellia paste (Banxiaqu), Magnolia bark (Noupu) processed with ginger, Platycodon root (Jiegeng) 2 liang, Licorice root (Gancao) 1 liang.
Take 5 qian per dose.
Expels turbidity and evil pathogens, and treats miasma. Its aromatic and potent nature is sufficient to overcome the pathogen, while simultaneously using phlegm-resolving and dampness-promoting agents to protect the spleen and stomach. Once the middle jiao harmonizes, the external pathogen resolves spontaneously.
Bupleurum root (Chaihu), Ephedra stem (Mahuang) de-jointed, Alisma rhizome (Zexie) each 3 qian.
Malaria occurring daily indicates the pathogen is in the Wei level; malaria occurring every other day indicates the pathogen is in the Ying level; severe tertian malaria indicates the pathogen is in the Fu organs. All are caused by first contracting heat and then cold, leading to a struggle between Yin and Yang. The teachings of the *Neijing* are as clear as the sun and moon. Later scholars debated endlessly, offering their own views, which only led to neglecting the classics.
Green tangerine peel (Qingpi), Magnolia bark (Noupu) stir-fried with vinegar, Bupleurum root (Chaihu), Scutellaria root (Huangqin) stir-fried, Pinellia tuber (Banxia) processed with ginger, Poria (Fuling), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu) stir-fried with soil, Licorice root (Gancao) honey-fried, Tsaoko fruit (Caoguo).
Decoct with ginger.
The *Neijing* discusses malaria in great detail, never mentioning the Zang organs, indicating that the malaria pathogen absolutely does not enter the Zang organs. The *Chaoshi Bingyuan* arbitrarily classified it, which was ridiculed by knowledgeable practitioners. Qingpi Yin modifies the formula structure of Xiaochaihu Tang by using Huangqin, presumably to clear heat from the Ying level so that the pathogen may exit via the Wei level. It is not treating malaria by clearing the Spleen channel because the disease is located there.
Coptis rhizome (Huanglian) 1 liang, Poria (Fuling) 2 liang, Donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao) stir-fried 1 liang.
Grind into powder, dissolve Ejiao in water to make pills.
The method of Huanglian Ejiao Tang was initiated by Zhang Zhongjing. However, regarding Ejiao, the emphasis lies on the well water, not the donkey skin. Because Ji River flows underground, only the waters of A Well connect with Ji River, thus possessing the function of pacifying the Liver and nourishing the Kidney. Later profit-driven individuals mixed cow, sheep, pig, and dog skins into the gelatin, damaging the Spleen and Stomach; it is better not to use it.
