Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) and Aged Fine Tea (Chenxi Cha)
Each ingredient approximately three qian, decocted strongly and taken orally.
This is also a method to harmonize Yin and Yang. It can be used for mild and superficial diseases.
Reed Rhizome (Lugen), one jin; Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), one jin; Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), two liang; Rice (Jingmi), one he.
This formula is effective for treating vomiting caused by heat stagnation in the Stomach. However, if it is claimed to treat Stomach injury due to cold, I dare not believe it deeply.
Boiling Water (Feitang) and Well Water (Jingshui)
Mix half zhong of each and take orally.
This method is excellent; extremely plain yet extremely magical, it is a formula that has proven effective repeatedly.
Licorice Root (Gancao), two liang; Black Soybean (Heidou), half sheng.
It is merely stated to detoxify medicines, not a formula for treating diseases.
Astragalus Membranaceus Root (Huangqi), honey-fried, one qian five fen; Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen); Licorice Root (Gancao), roasted, one qian; Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), stir-fried with soil; Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), with white pith retained; Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), five fen; Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), two fen; Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), three fen.
Decoct with three slices of Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) and two Jujubes (Dazao).
Qi is what humans rely on for life. The Great Qi accumulates in the chest and returns to the Dantian. Upon exhalation, it travels from the Heart to the Lungs; upon inhalation, it is received by the Liver and stored in the Kidneys. It reaches every part of the body without pause or stop. Therefore, Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi) serves as the master of the whole body. When it protects the exterior muscle layer, it becomes Wei Qi (Defensive Qi); when it governs the blood vessels internally, it becomes Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi); when distributed among the various Zang-Fu organs, it becomes the Qi of those respective organs. If a person can follow and nourish it, then Qi will be calm and Blood will be harmonious, leaving no room for disease.
However, the Seven Emotions disturb within, and the Six Exogenous Pathogenic Factors invade from without, giving rise to myriad diseases. Disorders of Qi such as stagnant Qi, rebellious Qi, agitated Qi, sluggish Qi, obstructed Qi, dry Qi, cold Qi, phlegm Qi, damp Qi, and water Qi are too numerous to mention. Physicians must analyze carefully and treat according to symptoms to avoid mismanagement. Wang Ang prioritized Buzhong Yiqi Decoction in the section on regulating Qi. This is truly because Li Dongyuan's differentiation between internal injury and external contraction was earnest and detailed, preventing people from mistaking Yang deficiency fever for Taiyang disease and recklessly applying sweating or purging methods, thereby saving countless lives. His contribution is indeed worthy of praise through the ages. Regarding this specific formula, its indication notes that it treats all conditions of sinking of clear Yang and insufficiency of Middle Qi. The concluding remarks are clear and correct, containing no errors. Had Li Dongyuan encountered cases of Yin deficiency fever or upper excess with lower deficiency, he would certainly not have used this formula. Yet, poor learners often hold preconceived notions and stubbornly adhere to them. Upon encountering fever, regardless of whether it is Yang deficiency or Yin deficiency, upper excess or lower excess, they claim that sweet-warm herbs can eliminate great heat, and frequently resort to Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Astragalus Membranaceus Root (Huangqi), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), and Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), causing significant harm. *Yi Guan* states: "Those who read the *Treatise on Cold Damage* but do not read Li Dongyuan's works will fail to understand internal injuries and kill many people; those who read Li Dongyuan but do not read Zhu Danxi's works will fail to understand Yin deficiency and kill many people." This is indeed a balanced view. To study medicine and revere Li Dongyuan shows ambition, yet one must not harbor preconceived biases. Moreover, how can harsh substances and dangerous methods be lightly tested?
