The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The dampness of the earth, if it invades the human body, will damage the skin, flesh, sinews, and vessels. Some people lie in low-lying damp places or are affected by mountain mists and vapors, resulting in whole-body pain, yellowing of both the body and eyes, and heavy limbs; this is an injury caused by external pathogenic factors. It is also stated: "All swellings and fullness due to dampness belong to Spleen Earth." Its symptoms include edema, heavy body, abdominal distension, flaccid muscles like mud that do not rebound upon pressure, and difficult urination; this is a condition contracted due to internal injury. For dampness contracted from the exterior, sweating therapy is appropriate; for dampness originating from the interior, unblocking and draining-dampness therapies are appropriate. It is also said: "To treat dampness without promoting diuresis is not the correct treatment." This refers to "opening the ghost gate (sweating) and cleansing the net house (bladder/diuresis)," which is the general principle for treating dampness.
The *Huangdi Neijing* states: In cases of dampness obstruction, a deep, soggy, and weak pulse, or a floating and moderate pulse, indicates dampness in the exterior; a deep and moderate pulse indicates dampness in the interior.
In one type of dampness syndrome with a deep and rapid pulse, scanty dark urine, and thirst, it is classified as damp-heat, suitable for clearing and draining, assisted by herbs such as Cortex Phellodendri (Baihuangbo, 黄柏) and Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine (Jiuqin, 酒芩).
In another type of dampness syndrome with a deep and soggy pulse, clear urine, loose stools, body pain but no fever, it is suitable for warming and tonifying, assisted by herbs such as Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Rougui, 肉桂).
In one type of damp disease with yellowing of the body and eyes, internal heat, and scanty dark urine, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) plus Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) should be used.
For individuals with weak Kidney Qi who expose themselves to wind while seeking coolness and lie on damp ground for long periods, leading to stiffness and spasms of the lower back and spine, bone pain, cold bi-syndrome in the feet and knees, and difficulty walking, Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Decoction of Angelica Pubescens and Taxillus) or Danggui Huoxue Tang (Decoction of Angelica Sinensis for Invigorating Blood) should be used.
For edema caused by internal injury to Spleen Qi, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), Wupi Tang (Decoction of Five Barks), or Jupi Tang (Decoction of Tangerine Peel) should be used.
For a dampness syndrome characterized by heavy and painful body, chest discomfort, nausea, and loose stools, Chushi Tang (Dampness-Expelling Decoction) should be used.
For conditions caused by exposure to wind, rain, and low-lying dampness, resulting in whole-body heaviness and pain, and a cold sensation in the waist as if sitting in water, known as Shen Zhuo (Kidney Fixation), Shenzhuo Tang (Decoction for Kidney Fixation) or Shenshi Tang (Dampness-Draining Decoction) should be used.
For lumbar pain caused by cold-dampness invasion, Shengfu Tang (Raw Aconite Decoction) should be used.
During the sixth and seventh lunar months, when dampness prevails, the "child can make the mother full" (Liver Wood generating Heart Fire or similar generative cycle imbalance), leading to damp-heat combining to attack Lung Metal (Geng Metal). When Lung Metal is damaged by damp-heat, the source of Cold Water generation is cut off; when the source is cut off, Kidney deficiency occurs, causing severe Wei-Jue (Atrophy and Paralysis) syndromes. Symptoms include flaccidity and paralysis below the waist, inability to walk, and tilting of the two feet; Qingzao Tang (Dryness-Clearing Decoction) should be used.
For sensations of the neck being pulled, the waist breaking, headache, and spinal rigidity, Qianghuo Shengshi Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Overcoming Dampness) should be used.
Treatment for lumbar and back pain, cold numbness and weakness in the feet and knees, stiffness, and spasms due to dampness invasion:
Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Duhuo, 独活), Radix et Caulis Taxilli (Sangjisheng, 桑寄生), Cortex Eucommiae (Duzhong, 杜仲), Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niuxi, 牛膝), Radix Asari (Xixin, 细辛), Herba Gentianae Macrophyllae (Qinjiao, 秦艽), Prepared Radix Rehmanniae (Shudihuang, 熟地黄), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng, 防风), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao, 甘草), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, 当归), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药). Use two cups of water and three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), decoct until eight-tenths remains, and take after meals.
