Guan-Ge disease, the term "Guan" refers to the inability to urinate; the term "Ge" refers to vomiting and regurgitation.
Dai Yun stated: Guan-Ge disease refers to a sensation of obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, where one desires to ascend but cannot, desires to descend but cannot, desires to eat but cannot. This is caused by the horizontal blockage of Qi (vital energy).
Zhu Danxi stated: To treat Guan-Ge disease, emetic therapy must be used to lift the horizontally blocked Qi. If there is deficiency of Middle Qi with failure of transportation and transformation, ascending and descending agents should be added to Qi-tonifying herbs. If cold is above and heat is below, and the pulse at both Cun positions on the radial arteries is four times larger than normal, if phlegm-dampness is present, Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) combined with ascending agents is appropriate.
Seven Emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, fright), Four Qi (spring warmth, summer heat, autumn coolness, winter cold), Six Excesses (wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness, fire).
The entire human body relies on Qi. The name for this Qi is "Wei Qi" (Defensive Qi), which means defending the whole body. Therefore, women should appropriately dissipate Qi to regulate menstruation, while men should nourish Qi to preserve spirit. How great is Qi! It must not be treated lightly. If Seven Emotions disturb internally and Four Qi affect externally, improper regulation leads to rapid onset of disease. Medical theories state that all diseases arise from Qi, which is what is meant here. Anger causes Qi to move upward; joy causes Qi to slacken; worry causes Qi to scatter; exertion causes Qi to be consumed; grief causes Qi to be depleted; fear causes Qi to sink downward; cold causes Qi to contract; heat causes Qi to leak outward; fright causes Qi to knot. These are the differences among the Nine Qi transformations. If suddenly, without proper adjustment of Qi, one experiences locked jaws, unconsciousness, convulsions of hands and feet, and inability to raise limbs, gradually leading to stifling confusion, this is a sign of Middle Qi deficiency. Provided there is no salivary sound in the mouth, wind-dispelling drugs must not be mistakenly used; caution is required when treating such conditions.
Zi He Zhang stated: All diseases stem from Qi; all diseases arise from Qi, which is what is meant here. Under normal conditions, the body remains peaceful; under changed conditions, disease arises. However, because they are interfered with by Seven Emotions and Six Excesses, various diseases arise, manifesting as swelling, etc.
Wang Tai said: Anger causes Yang Qi to reverse and rush upward, causing Liver Wood to overact upon Spleen Earth, thus resulting in severe vomiting or simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea. Joy causes Qi harmony and mental openness, allowing Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi to flow freely, resulting in slackened Qi. Grief causes urgency in the Heart vessels and elevation of Lung lobes, blocking the Upper Jiao, preventing the dispersion of Ying and Wei Qi, resulting in depleted Qi. Fear causes Essence to retreat; retreat leads to closure of the Upper Jiao; closure causes Qi to return, leading to distension in the Lower Jiao and stagnation of Qi movement. Cold causes closure of Couli (pores), stopping Qi movement and causing contraction. Heat causes opening of Couli, dispersal of Ying and Wei Qi, profuse sweating, and leakage of Qi. Fright causes the Heart Spirit to lack foundation, the Shen (Spirit) to have no refuge, and thoughts to lack direction, resulting in chaotic Qi. Upon exertion, panting and sweating occur, with internal and external Qi escaping, leading to consumption of Qi. Overthinking causes the Heart Spirit to have no abode, the Shen to have no refuge, and Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) to remain stagnant without moving, resulting in urgent Qi. This is the differentiation of the Nine Qi in Suwen, explained in detail and clearly.
