Blood deficiency, qi deficiency, food retention, phlegm-fluid retention:
Zhu Danxi said: Fanwei (reverse vomiting) is Ge'ye (esophageal obstruction); Ge'ye is the gradual onset of Fanwei.
The pathology of Ge'ye varies. Some cases arise from excessive thinking stirring spleen fire; some from extreme anger stirring liver fire; some from long-term consumption of spicy and hot foods stirring stomach fire; some from sexual excess stirring kidney fire. Generally, fire qi flares upward, steaming body fluids to form phlegm. Initially, phlegm-fire has not yet congealed; the throat is dry, and food and drink cannot pass smoothly, manifesting as Ge or Ye syndromes. Over time, phlegm congeals in the epigastrium, blocking stomach qi; food intake becomes difficult, and what is eaten is vomited out shortly after. In some cases, food stagnates in the stomach and is vomited out only after a long delay, constituting vomiting. This is how Ge'ye gradually develops into Fanwei. Fanwei characterized by blazing fire invariably originates from Ge'ye. These diseases are all caused by sorrow, anger, depression, and phlegm-fluid retention obstructing the chest and diaphragm, blocking the airway and throat, and causing spontaneous constipation. Constipation leads to qi rebelling upward instead of descending; food cannot enter, and if it does, it comes back out. This results in the withering and drying of the intestines and stomach, eventually becoming an incurable disease.
